Book excerpt: Cuban and Cuban-American Women: An Annotated Bibliography covers primary and secondary sources found in Cuba and the United States on Cuban and Cuban-American women from the period 1868 to the present. The editors have amassed primary, archival materials located in Cuba and the United States, annotated the holdings and described their locations. Secondary sources are also included and annotated. Part I, comprising Chapters 1 through 3, contains all archival and secondary sources about women in Cuba. Covering the period 1868-1997, this section is divided into the nineteenth century and Independence (1868-1898), the early Republic (1898-1958), Guerrillas and Popular Underground Resistance against Fulgencio Batista (1953-1958), and the Cuban Revolution (1959-1997). Topics in this section include law, history, feminism, health, education, social welfare, archival resources, revolutionary government, the military, political organizations, cultural events, literature, and art. Part II contains all archival and secondary sources about Cuban women in the United States. It also covers the period from 1868-1997, but the body of literature is on the post-1959 era. Topics in this section include the exile experience, family history, autobiography, labor studies, health, education, political organization, racial issues, cultural expressions, literature, and art. Download or read book Battles for Belonging written by Sandra Sánchez–López and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-03-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battles for Belonging: Women Journalists, Political Culture, and the Paradoxes of Inclusion in Colombia, 1943-1970 examines women journalists who conceived of their publications as political interventions in mid-twentieth-century Colombia. These journalists committed to shaping justice and opportunity for women in society through writing while battling within the publishing realm to also transform and professionalize the practice of journalism in their own terms. By analyzing the contentious narratives of gender and class these women crafted as well as their conflicting efforts to maintain their stature in the printing and public worlds, it reveals the ongoing negotiations involved within their disputes over inclusion and democracy in a country still finding its way to equality, peace, and stability between the 1940s and 1960s. This book challenges oversimplified portrayals of struggles for power that either glorify or vilify these historical processes by erasing the complexity of the political and social actors involved in them. It stresses the importance of women, but not to the expense of a balanced critique of their historical reality, actions, and endeavors. This is a history of paradoxical political manifestations and a redefinition of power struggles as multidirectional, intersectional, non-monolithic historical processes, from the viewpoint of women.

Download or read book South American Independence written by Catherine Davies and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The struggles for independence in Latin America during the first half of the nineteenth century were accompanied by a wide-ranging debate about political rights, nationality and citizenship. In South American Independence, Catherine Davies, Claire Brewster and Hilary Owen investigate the neglected role of gender in that discussion. Examining women writers from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Colombia, the book traces the contradictions inherent in revolutionary movements that, while arguing for the rights of all, remained ambivalent, at best, about the place of women. Through studies of both published and unpublished writings, South American Independence reveals the complex role of women in shaping the vexed ideologies of independence.

Download or read book Women s Negotiations and Textual Agency in Latin America 1500 1799 written by Mónica Díaz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though women have been historically underrepresented in official histories and literary and artistic traditions, their voices and writings can be found in abundance in the many archives of the world where they remain to be uncovered. The present volume seeks to recover women’s voices and actions while studying the mechanisms through which they authorized themselves and participated in the creation of texts and documents found in archives of colonial Latin America. Organized according to three main themes, "Censorship and the Body," "Female Authority and Legal Discourse," and "Private Lives and Public Opinions," the essays in this collection focus on women’s knowledge and the discursive traces of their daily concerns found in various colonial genres. Herein we consider women not only as agents of history, but rather as authors of written records produced either by their own hand or by means of dictations, collaborations, or rewritings of their oral renditions. Inhabiting the territories of the Iberian colonies from Peru to New Spain, the women studied in this volume come from different ethnic and social backgrounds, from African slaves to the indigenous elite and to those who arrived from Iberia and were known as "Old Christians." Finally, we have prepared this volume in hopes that the readers will find a particular appeal in archival sources, in lesser-known documents, and in the processes involved in the circulation of knowledge and print culture between the 1500s and the late 1700s.

This book was released on 2007-11-20 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection echoes and contributes to a number of the issues defined by both the traditional and revisionist historiography. The intent of this special issue of the Portuguese Studies Review was to highlight some of the new research on late medieval and early modern Portuguese women, subjects typically situated outside of the academic mainstream, and to complement the four major collections on the history of Portuguese women published since 1986, as well as the larger literature dealing with Spain. The essays are organized into six general themes: “Female Characters in Late Medieval Chronicles,” “Women and Power in the Late Middle Ages,” “Habsburg Queens and Portugal,” “Women and the Economy,” “Attitudes Toward Women,” and “Women and Religion.” The volume presents essays by Amélia P. Hutchinson, José Valente, Jutta Sperling, Ivana Elbl, Susannah C. Humble Ferreira, Félix Labrador Arroyo, Annemarie Jordan, Almudena Pérez de Tudela, Amélia Polónia, Amândio Jorge Morais Barros, Darlene Abreu-Ferreira, Pedor Miguel Reboredo Marques, Marcia Eliane Alves de Souza e Mello, Jessiva V. Download or read book Families in War and Peace written by Sarah C. Chambers and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Families in War and Peace Sarah C. Chambers places gender analysis and family politics at the center of Chile's struggle for independence and its subsequent state building. Linking the experiences of both prominent and more humble families to Chile's political and legal history, Chambers argues that matters such as marriage, custody, bloodlines, and inheritance were crucial to Chile's transition from colony to nation. She shows how men and women extended their familial roles to mobilize kin networks for political ends, both during and after the Chilean revolution. From the conflict's end in 1823 until the 1850s, the state adopted the rhetoric of paternal responsibility along with patriarchal authority, which became central to the state building process. Chilean authorities, Chambers argues, garnered legitimacy by enacting or enforcing paternalist laws on property restitution, military pensions, and family maintenance allowances, all of which provided for diverse groups of Chileans. By acting as the fathers of the nation, they aimed to reconcile the "greater Chilean family" and form a stable government and society.
