Book Political Economy and Sociolinguistics

Download or read book Political Economy and Sociolinguistics written by David Block and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the BAAL Book Prize 2019 This book explores how political economy intersects with sociolinguistics, specifically how neoliberalism, inequality and social class mediate language in society issues. After the preface, in which the author sets the scene for the content of the book, Chapter 1 is an extensive, though selective, review of sociolinguistics research which has been framed as political economic in orientation. The chapter concludes that such research generally contains little in the way of thorough and in-depth coverage of the key ideas and conceptual frameworks said to undergird it. With this consideration in mind, Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are organised around in-depth discussions of, respectively, political economy as a general disciplinary frame; neoliberalism as the variegated variety of capitalism dominant in the world today; and stratification, inequality and social class, as phenomena intrinsic to capitalism, which in the neoliberal era have come to the fore as key issues. Drawing directly on the background provide in Chapters 2-4, Chapters 5 and 6 explore two distinct political economy-informed lines of research, on the one hand, the 'neoliberal citizen', and on the other hand, 'discursive class warfare'. The book ends with an epilogue addressing issues arising around political economy in sociolinguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of aromatic interactions, the fundamental nature of substituent effects and the identification of contacts between anions and aromatic systems have generated stimulating arguments in recent years. New theoretical frameworks have been developed and tested and aromatic interactions have emerged as potential solutions for varied problems in biology and materials science. This book provides a wide ranging survey of the latest findings and advances surrounding aromatic interactions, stretching from the fundamentals to modern applications in synthesis, biology and materials chemistry. It also discusses computational, experimental and analytical approaches to understanding these interactions, including pi-pi, anion-pi, and cation-pi interactions. Aromatic Interactions: Frontiers in Knowledge and Application is a useful text for advanced students and researchers, and appeals to those working within the fields of supramolecular chemistry, computational chemistry and thermodynamics.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Environmental Justice

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Environmental Justice written by Ryan Holifield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Environmental Justice presents an extensive and cutting-edge introduction to the diverse, rapidly growing body of research on pressing issues of environmental justice and injustice. With wide-ranging discussion of current debates, controversies, and questions in the history, theory, and methods of environmental justice research, contributed by over 90 leading social scientists, natural scientists, humanists, and scholars from professional disciplines from six continents, it is an essential resource both for newcomers to this research and for experienced scholars and practitioners. The chapters of this volume examine the roots of environmental justice activism, lay out and assess key theories and approaches, and consider the many different substantive issues that have been the subject of activism, empirical research, and policy development throughout the world. The Handbook features critical reviews of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodological approaches and explicitly addresses interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity, and engaged research. Instead of adopting a narrow regional focus, it tackles substantive issues and presents perspectives from political and cultural systems across the world, as well as addressing activism for environmental justice at the global scale. Its chapters do not simply review the state of the art, but also propose new conceptual frameworks and directions for research, policy, and practice. Providing detailed but accessible overviews of the complex, varied dimensions of environmental justice and injustice, the Handbook is an essential guide and reference not only for researchers engaged with environmental justice, but also for undergraduate and graduate teaching and for policymakers and activists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ThisvolumeispublishedastheproceedingsoftheRussian-GermanAdvanced Research workshop on Computational Science and High Performance C- puting in Novosibirsk Academgorodok in September 2003. The contributions of these proceedings were provided and edited by the authors, chosen after a careful selection and reviewing. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Computational Techno- gies SB RAS (Novosibirsk, Russia) and the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (Stuttgart, Germany). The objective was the discussion of the latest results in computational science and to develop a close coope- tion between Russian and German specialists in the above-mentioned ?eld. The main directions of the workshop are associated with the problems of computational hydrodynamics, application of mathematical methods to the development of new generation of materials, environment protection pr- lems, development of algorithms, software and hardware support for hi- performance computation, and designing modern facilities for visualization of computational modelling results. The importance of the workshop topics was con?rmed by the partici- tion of representatives of major research organizations engaged in the so- tion of the most complex problems of mathematical modelling, development of new algorithms, programs and key elements of new information techno- gies. Among the Russian participants were researchers of the Institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Institute of Com- tational Technologies, Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mat- matical Geophysics, Institute of Computational Modelling, Russian Federal Nuclear Center, All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics, - merovo State University.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Historical Syntax

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Historical Syntax written by Adam Ledgeway and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 1321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change is an inherent feature of all aspects of language, and syntax is no exception. While the synchronic study of syntax allows us to make discoveries about the nature of syntactic structure, the study of historical syntax offers even greater possibilities. Over recent decades, the study of historical syntax has proven to be a powerful scientific tool of enquiry with which to challenge and reassess hypotheses and ideas about the nature of syntactic structure which go beyond the observed limits of the study of the synchronic syntax of individual languages or language families. In this timely Handbook, the editors bring together the best of recent international scholarship on historical syntax. Each chapter is focused on a theme rather than an individual language, allowing readers to discover how systematic descriptions of historical data can profitably inform and challenge highly diverse sets of theoretical assumptions.
