Book excerpt: Germany was at the forefront of the development of armoured cars during the First World War, however with the end of the war in November of 1918 and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 the victorious allies imposed a complete ban on the Germany army being equipped with any armoured vehicles including armoured cars. In the early 1920's. The "Zusatz von Bologne" which was an amendum to the Treaty of Versailles allowed the German Army to produce armoured cars primarily for policing duties and eventually this gave rise to the Sd.Kfz. 13 series in the early 1930's, however with the Nazi party takeover of Germany in 1933 new 4-wheeled armour cars were ordered and they were all to be based on the Horch off road heavy passenger chassis, they were numbered Sd.Kfz. 221, 222 and 223 the same chassis was also developed in to the Sd.Kfz. 260 and 261 radio command vehicles. This publication covers the German 4 wheeled cars in great photographical detail focusing on the armoured cars and their crews as they dealt with the conditions and circumstances they found themselves in, photographs from the author's own collection have been used to ilistrate this book that were taken by the average German soldier not official army cameramen who's photos are well known and have been published over and over again already.

Ford Motor Company in 1931 built the Ford Werke factory in Cologne, now the headquarters of European Ford. In this book, historians tell the astonishing story of what happened at Opel and Ford Werke under the Third Reich, and of the aftermath today. Long before the Second World War, key American executives at Ford and General Motors were eager to do business with Nazi Germany. Ford Werke and Opel became indispensable suppliers to the German armed forces, together providing most of the trucks that later motorized the Nazi attempt to conquer Europe. After the outbreak of war in 1939, Opel converted its largest factory to warplane parts production, and both companies set up extensive maintenance and repair networks to help keep the war machine on wheels. During the war, the Nazi Reich used millions of POWs, civilians from German-occupied countries, and concentration camp prisoners as forced laborers in the German homefront economy. Starting in 1940, Ford Werke and Opel also made use of thousands of forced laborers. POWs and civilian detainees, deported to Germany by the Nazi authorities, were kept at private camps owned and managed by the companies. In the longest section of the book, ten people who were forced to work at Ford Werke recall their experiences in oral testimonies. For more than fifty years, legal and political obstacles frustrated efforts to gain compensation for Nazi-era forced labor; in the most recent case, a $12 billion lawsuit was filed against the computer giant I.B.M. by a group of Gypsy organizations. In 1998, former forced laborers filed dozens of class action lawsuits against German corporations in U.S. courts. The concluding chapter reviews the subsequent, immensely complex negotiations towards a settlement - which involved Germany, the United States, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Czech Republic, Israel and several other countries, as well as dozens of well-known German corporations.

Beyond identifying several variables over which policy makers have direct leverage, including the price for fuel, the supply of public transit, and land use features, the analysis uses the estimated coefficients from a multinomial logit model to simulate car ownership rates under alternative scenarios pertaining to demographic change and other socioeconomic variables. Our baseline scenario predicts continued increases in the number of cars despite decreases in population, a trend that could be partially off set by substantial increases in fuel prices.

Cars with special technology and equipment are stored here, as are the silver arrows of Caracciola, Lang and Fangio, the Pope's carriages, the state cars of the young Federal Republic of Germany or Mercedes models that became collectors' items due to their prominent previous owners. Some of these exhibits are well protected and waiting in special wooden boxes for their next use at exhibitions, fairs, events or classic car races. Others stand next to each other as silent witnesses of the past. Each time a model is modified, the collection is extended by the last vehicle of the discontinued series, which experts believe will be one of tomorrow's classic cars. The 'Holy Halls' are not open to the public; enquiries from editorial offices and TV teams have often been rejected. But, during the years 2016 to 2018, almost all the vehicles of the Mercedes collection were photographed. Thus, a unique photographic collection was created, the automobile history from more than ten decades; many of the previously unpublished photographs are exclusively available here in this book. In addition, Mercedes-Benz Classic agreed to open the 'Holy Halls' for an external photo team and provide information about the car models stored there. For the first time, it has been possible to produce a fascinating illustrated book with panoramic and detailed shots from the 'halls', and lively photo reports on cars that tell stories - from the first Benz batting motor car to the latest Formula 1 racing car.
