Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As girls growing up in Clare Valley, Australia, Anna, Bett, and Carrie Quinlan were childhood singing stars known as The Alphabet Sisters. The unbridled enthusiasm of their flamboyant grandmother Lola was the glue that held them together. As adults, though, the women haven’t spoken in years–ever since Bett’s fiancé deserted her to marry the younger Carrie. Now Lola is turning eighty and she is determined to reunite the girls for a blowout bash. And no one ever says no to Lola. Bett, who fled to London after the scandal of losing her fiancé, is hesitant to face her sisters and her hometown–especially since she has yet to find another man. Sophisticated Anna, the eldest sister, isn’t too keen on the prospect either, though she’s secretly grateful for any excuse to leave her crumbling marriage behind in Sydney. And Carrie, who remained in Clare Valley, is perhaps the most apprehensive. Her marriage–the nominal cause of the sisters’ estrangement–is also on the rocks. Was she wrong to have followed her heart and run off with Bett’s fiancé? When Lola shares her special request, that the girls stage a musical she has written, their short visit becomes a much longer commitment. As they are forced to spend more time together, the sisters must confront the pain that lingers between them. Preconceptions and misunderstandings are slowly put aside and the three find themselves gradually, irresistibly enveloping one another once again–until an unexpected turn of events changes everything in ways none of them could have ever imagined. . . . Layering the lighthearted antics of small-town life with a heartbreaking story of loyalty lost and found, The Alphabet Sisters is an unforgettable story of two generations of women who learn that being true to themselves means being true to one another. BONUS: This edition contains excerpts from Monica McInerney's Lola's Secret, At Home with the Templetons, The Faraday Girls, Family Baggage, Greetings from Somewhere Else, and Upside Down Inside Out.

He doesn't like hello hugs or goodbye hugs, game-winning home run hugs or dropped ice cream cone hugs, and he definitely doesn't like birthday hugs. He'd much rather give a high five--or a low five, a side five, a double five, or a spinny five. Yup, some people love hugs; other people don't. So how can you tell if someone likes hugs or not? There's only one way to find out: Ask! Because everybody gets to decide for themselves whether they want a hug or not.

Download or read book Wheels of Misfortune written by Robert W. Wofford and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-20 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are the tales of a twenty-one year relationship with taxi madness. It seemed at times the folks who called for a cab in Ocean City were either insane or stupid beyond normal comprehension. These were my customers and I never knew what kind of creature would be riding with me, until I arrived of course and saw them standing at the curbside. Sometimes it would be some felonious creature, fresh from prison, wielding various weaponry. One could tell from a distance this was not going to be a good situation. And so at such times I would hastily leave the vicinity. Sadly this happened fairly often. The yells of rage and various hand gestures of the would be customer was added incentive to get the heck away from there. What a spectacle to behold in my rear view mirror. No need to invite trouble or mayhem after all. Our dispatchers, most of them former felons themselves, would understand that certain scary individuals need not be picked up. This, to avoid ending up in the various sections of the local newspaper that dealt with violent death. Particularly the Obit column. It was only due to my keen sense of self preservation and aversion to pain that I was fortunate to avoid said encounters with the minions of the Grim Reaper. These tales of Taxi woe came upon me during my years of diligent public service to my community and my wallet. My wife had needs after all and it was my DUTY to provide for her many pairs of shoes, (over 300 pairs for heavens sake), and clothing which she shopped for and then never wore. They were interesting times to say the least. Enjoy the tales, I lived them and you can read from a safe distance. LOL

Download or read book Sister Carrie written by Theodore Dreiser and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When a girl leaves home at eighteen, she does one of two things. Either she falls into saving hands and becomes better, or she rapidly assumes the cosmopolitan standard of virtue and becomes worse.” With Sister Carrie, first published in 1900, Theodore Dreiser transformed the conventional “fallen woman” story into a genuinely innovative and powerful work of fiction. As he hurled his impressionable midwestern heroine into the throbbing, amoral world of the big city, he revealed, with brilliant insight, the deep and driving forces of American culture: the restless idealism, glamorous materialism, and basic spiritual innocence. Sister Carrie brought American literature into the twentieth century. This volume, which reprints the text Dreiser approved for publication during his lifetime and includes a special appendix discussing his earlier, unedited manuscript, is the original standard edition of one of the great masterpieces of literary realism.
