Book excerpt: Part guide, part travelogue, this book tells the story of an eventful journey along Mexico and Central America's Main Street. Author Simon Calder takes the reader along one of the world's great highways, the Carretera Panamericana, from the US-Mexico border along the spine of Central America to the jungles of the Darien Gap in Panama. The twists and turns of this extraordinary journey are recounted - and paralleled by a first rate, up to date gazetteer and travellers survival kit to create a new concept in travel writing; a travelogue you can use as a guide. The book includes: how to cross the borders and deal with frontier officials - planning your itinerary around the most interesting towns and villages - listings of places to eat, drink and sleep - which volcanoes to climb, and which to admire from a safe distance - the beaches best for swimming, surf and scuba, or worst for rubbish - the detours to make for Mayan sites, jungle treks and rainforest wilderness.

Download or read book Mexican Waves written by Sonia Robles and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican Waves is the fascinating history of how borderlands radio stations shaped the identity of an entire region as they addressed the needs of the local population and fluidly reached across borders to the United States. In so doing, radio stations created a new market of borderlands consumers and worked both within and outside the constraints of Mexican and U.S. laws. Historian Sonia Robles examines the transnational business practices of Mexican radio entrepreneurs between the Golden Age of radio and the early years of television history. Intersecting Mexican history and diaspora studies with communications studies, this book explains how Mexican radio entrepreneurs targeted the Mexican population in the United States decades before U.S. advertising agencies realized the value of the Spanish-language market. Robles’s robust transnational research weaves together histories of technology, performance, entrepreneurship, and business into a single story. Examining the programming of northern Mexican commercial radio stations, the book shows how radio stations from Tijuana to Matamoros courted Spanish-language listeners in the U.S. Southwest and local Mexican audiences between 1930 and 1950. Robles deftly demonstrates Mexico’s role in creating the borderlands, adding texture and depth to the story. Scholars and students of radio, Spanish-language media in the United States, communication studies, Mexican history, and border studies will see how Mexican radio shaped the region’s development and how transnational listening communities used broadcast media’s unique programming to carve out a place for themselves as consumers and citizens of Mexico and the United States.

Book In Person

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ivone Margulies
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 0190496827
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book In Person written by Ivone Margulies and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Person: Reenactment in Postwar and Contemporary Cinema delineates a new performative genre based on replay and self-awareness. The book argues that in-person reenactment, an actual person reenacting her past on camera, departs radically from other modes of mimetic reconstruction. In Person theorizes this figure's protean temporality and revisionist capabilities and it considers its import in terms of social representativity and exemplarity. Close readings of select, historicized examples define an alternate, confessional-performative vein to understand the self-reflexive nature of postwar and post-holocaust testimonial cinemas. The book contextualizes Zavattini's proposal that in neorealism everyone should act his own story in a sort of anti-individualist, public display (Love in the City and We the Women). It checks the convergence between verit experiments, a heightened self-critique in France and the reception of psychodrama in France (Chronicle of a summer and The Human Pyramid) in the late fifties. And, through Bazin, it reflects on the quandaries of celebrity biopics: how the circularity of the star's iconography is checked by her corporeal limits (Sophia her Own Story and the docudrama Torero ). In Person traces a shift from the exemplary and transformative ethos of fifties reenactment towards the un-redemptive stance of contemporary reenactment films such as Lanzmann's Shoah, Zhang Yuan's Sons, Andrea Tonacci's Hills of Chaos. It defines continuities between verite testimony (Chronicle, and Moi un Noir) and later para-juridical films such as the Karski Report and Rithy Panh's S21, the Khmer Rouge Killing Machine suggesting the power of co-presence and in person actualization for an ethics of viewership.

Book Space and Place in the Mexican Landscape

Download or read book Space and Place in the Mexican Landscape written by Fernando Núñez and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-19 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysical conceptions have always influenced how human societies create the built environment. Mexico—with its rich culture, full of symbol and myth, its beautiful cities, and its evocative ruins—is an excellent place to study the interplay of influences on space and place. In this volume, the authors consider the ideas and views that give the constructed spaces and buildings of Mexico—especially, of Querétaro—their particular ambience. They explore the ways the built world helps people find meaning and establish order for their earthly existence by mirroring their metaphysical assumptions, and they guide readers through time to see how the transformation of worldviews affects the urban evolution of a Mexican city. The authors, then, construct a “metaphysical archeology” of space and place in the built landscape of Mexico. In the process, they identify the intangible, spiritual aspects of this land. Not only scholars of architecture, but also archeologists and anthropologists—particularly those interested in Mexican backgrounds and culture—will appreciate the authors’ approach and conclusions.
