Book excerpt: “A splendid gallimaufry of the eminent Canadian’s talks and essays, mostly about literature and the creative life . . . a thought-filled and amusing book.”—The Washington Post For devotees of Davies and all lovers of literature and language, here is the “urbanity, wit, and high seriousness mixed by a master chef,” vintage delights from an exquisite literary menu (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Robertson Davies’s rich and varied collection of writings on the world of books and the miracle of language captures his inimitable voice and sustains his presence among us. Coming almost entirely from Davies’s own files of unpublished material, these twenty-four essays and lectures range over themes from “The Novelist and Magic” to “Literature and Technology,” from “Painting, Fiction, and Faking,” to “Can a Doctor Be a Humanist?” and “Creativity in Old Age.” Davies himself says merely: “Lucky writers . . . like wine, die rich in fruitiness and delicious aftertaste, so that their works survive them.” “Splendid—wise, witty, wide-ranging.”—The New York Times Book Review “Some of Davies’s ideas are iconoclastic, and will delight those who share them while stimulating those who do not. All his judgments are interesting, steeped in humanism, and most elegantly put.”—The Atlantic Monthly “The inimitable novelist gives an exuberant posthumous performance in this eclectic collection of (mostly) previously unpublished addresses, talks, and incidental pieces . . . Davies diffuses his opinions entertainingly, if occasionally superficially, but never loses his audience.”—Kirkus Reviews

Download or read book Tune written by Imogen Holst and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imogen Holst's Tune (Faber, 1962) is a searching enquiry into the invention of tune and at the same time a comprehensive anthology of tunes from folksong to the present day. Plainsong, street-cries, the songs of the English lutenists, Bach's dances, and Mozart's arias - whatever the origins and character of the tunes in question, Imogen Holst (daughter of the composer, Gustav Holst) has something fresh and revealing to say about them. And she does not confine herself to familiar ground. One of her most illuminating chapters is devoted to the music of India, where a raga can provide improvised 'tune' of several hours duration. This chapter is the result of her personal experience of studying music in India, and it is typical of her vivid approach to the subject. Her book is for everyone who likes to sing, play, whistle, hum or listen to a good tune.

Download or read book Music in a New Found Land written by Wilfrid Mellers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is accurately defined by its subtitle. Music in a New Found Land does not pretend to be a comprehensive history of American music. Nor does Mellers strive to catalog what he considers to be authentic American music. Instead, he deals, in some detail, with comparatively few composers, most of whom have wellestablished reputations. It has always been difficult to separate American music from its immediate relevance to the twentieth century. Mellers' theme involves the relationship between "art" music, jazz and pop music; he sees the segregation of these genres as both illogical and artifi cial. If the pop music of Tin Pan Alley may be anti-art, it has also produced Gershwin, Ellington, and composing improvisers such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis. The study of American music is as relevant into any inquiry into a national culture as the study of American literature and painting. This book contains a large number of quotations from American writers, because Mellers thought American sensibility should parallel, reinforce, and comment on American music. In sum, this is the closest available one-volume history of American music, and a window into American culture.
