Book excerpt: Ken dropped out of Purdue in his sophomore year because he wasn't motivated. The leaders of the youth group at Beville Ave. EUB Church, Mr. & Mrs. Wyatt, suggested Ken return to the youth group and said he might be interested in two girls who had joined the group. One of the girls, Carol Fuchs, was third in her class at Manual High School. The youth group had a progressive dinner where you spend the evening eating a meal course at different houses and socializing. Early in the evening Ken said hello to Carol and they spent the evening together. At the end of the evening he asked her to go to a hockey game the next night. Carol said yes. Ken continued to ask Carol out and during the summer decided he needed to return to Purdue and get an education if he was ever going to amount to anything. The last time he saw Carol before he left for Purdue, he saw that she cared for him a lot. Carol asked Ken to write every day and he agreed. Ken liked Carol a lot, but he thought she liked him a lot more than he liked her. These are the letters Ken wrote to Carol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A charming, comic, and ultimately poignant story about the creation of the most famous Christmas tale ever written. It’s as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; it’s all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps.” —Anthony Doerr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of All The Light We Cannot See Laced with humor, rich historical detail from Charles Dickens’ life, and clever winks to his work, Samantha Silva's Mr. Dickens and His Carol is an irresistible new take on a cherished classic. Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house. But when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses. And a serious bout of writer’s block sets in. Frazzled and filled with self-doubt, Dickens seeks solace in his great palace of thinking, the city of London itself. On one of his long night walks, in a once-beloved square, he meets the mysterious Eleanor Lovejoy, who might be just the muse he needs. As Dickens’ deadlines close in, Eleanor propels him on a Scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes about generosity, friendship, ambition, and love. The story he writes will change Christmas forever.

Book Joyce Carol Oates Letters to a Biographer

Download or read book Joyce Carol Oates Letters to a Biographer written by Joyce Carol Oates and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich compilation of Joyce Carol Oates's letters across four decades displays her warmth and generosity, her droll and sometimes wicked sense of humor, her phenomenal energy, and most of all, her mastery of the lost art of letter writing. "It's hard to think of another writer with as fecund and protean an imagination as the eighty-five-year-old Joyce Carol Oates, who is surely on any short list of America's greatest living writers." —New York Times Magazine In this generous selection of Joyce Carol Oates’s letters to her biographer and friend Greg Johnson, readers will discover a never-before-seen dimension of her phenomenal talent. In 1975, when Johnson was a graduate student, he first wrote to Oates, already a world-famous author, and drew an appreciative, empathetic response. Soon the two began a fairly intense, largely epistolary friendship that would last until the present day. As time passed, letters became faxes, and faxes became emails, but the energy and vividness of Oates’s writing never abated. Her letters were often sprinkled with the names of well-known public figures, from John Updike and Toni Morrison to Steve Martin and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. There are also descriptions of far-flung travels she undertook with her first husband, the scholar and editor Raymond Smith, and with her second, the distinguished Princeton neuroscientist Charlie Gross. But much of Oates’s prose centered on the pleasures of her home life, including her pet cats and the wildlife outside her study window. Whereas her academic essays and book reviews are eloquent in a formal manner, in these letters she is wholly relaxed, even when she is serious in her concerns. Like Johnson, she was always engaged in work, whether a long novel or a brief essay, and the letters give a fascinating glimpse into Oates’s writing practice.

She was only ten when her best friend was abducted and strangled, and now Val must cope with another devastating loss when her husband is fatally shot. Normally focused and confident, Val is haunted by images of Dave’s last moments and she immerses herself in work when a young attorney is tortured and killed after placing a frantic, untraceable call to 911. Adriana Ortiz quit her job at Bedford’s most prestigious firm to work for Legal Aid and recently had a confrontation with an abusive, drug-dealing ex-boyfriend. The detectives soon come to the chilling realization they’re hunting a killer on a mission to hold his victims accountable for their actions. With the clock ticking on another 911 call, Val is desperate to stop the killer and provide some closure for the relatives, but she allows raw emotions to overrule her cop-instincts, and when she pursues a suspect without backup, she finds herself facing the same fate as the other victims.

Book Flights of the Herons

Download or read book Flights of the Herons written by Esther Royer Ayers and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-11-14 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from being a treatise on birds, “Flights of the Herons” is about people. Emily Dickinson wrote: "Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul." What else but hope drives the suffering to continue searching for that brightly-lit doorway that leads to freedom from oppression? "Flights of the Herons" binds three members of the Reyher family together in their flights from oppression in a seamless narrative that will keep you spellbound until the very end. Frank, a professional man living in Youngstown, Ohio, and grieving over the death of his wife, takes up genealogy. He uncovers fascinating facts regarding his REYHER ancestral history, (Reyher means heron in German) and plans a trip to Germany with his mother to obtain further information. Two weeks before their departure, Frank learns that a possible relative, Katie, whom he has not heard of before, has won a literary award. On the assumption they are related, he decides to write her to suggest collaboration on a genealogy-inspired book that would tell the captivating story of their common great-great-grandfather, Johann Gotthard Reyher, who in 1819 fled the oppression of mandatory mercenary servitude in the German Kingdom of Wuerttemberg to emigrate to the United States. Frank’s mother cautions this Katie he seeks is from an Old Order Mennonite family. Since that religion prohibits school attendance beyond the eighth grade, she could not possibly have won a literary award. Frank perseveres and writes the letter. Katie, married, is an attractive housewife who lives in Arkansas, and is painfully embarrassed over a limp, {a metaphor for women who suffer the battering effects of emotional abuse}, she acquired in an accident a couple of years earlier. Her husband Ken, an ambitious advertising executive, is extremely controlling and subjects Katie to disastrous emotional and verbal abuse. Although terrified when first receiving Frank ́s letter, Katie finds solace within his words. Through sneaky emails, she converses with Frank and eventually agrees to a clandestine meeting at her childhood homestead, which is the homestead Johann Godhard Reyher purchased when first coming to America. The story, a fiction, nevertheless contains true genealogy information on the Hans Gotthard Reyher family, and dates back to even a much earlier ancestor, Hans Reyher, who migrated to Wuerttemberg from Switzerland after the Thirty Years’ War.

Download or read book True Life Crime written by Real People Magazine and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder...Crime...Weapons....Simply thinking of such things is enough to send shivers of terror into our hearts. Even the words are dark and scary. We all like to imagine that we are safe, that the world is a rational and reasonable place. But who knows what the person standing next to you is really capable of...? And if pushed, how far would you go to protect someone you love - or punish someone you hate?As editor of Real People, one of Britain's leading true-life magazines, I see horrific details of hundreds of crimes every week. We search the length and breadth of the UK, and deal with reporters all over the world, to find the best true-life crimes for our pages, and those in our regular special Crime Confidential magazine. From terrifying Russian cannibals to scorned lovers who will stop at nothing for revenge, it's often hard to accept just how brutal and depraved some people can be. The flip side of the coin is the remarkable resilience of the human spirit. My staff and myself are regularly humbled by talking to and reading about amazing individuals who have been the victims of terrible crimes, yet they have rebuilt their lives, learned how to forgive and moved on.It's this spine-chilling mix of horror and strength that makes crime such an addictive genre. True crime stories feature the full scope of human emotions, from anger to despair, from fear to relief. Suspects will wriggle and change their stories, but their arrogant confidence can crumble in the face of clues and police discoveries. And most shockingly, true crime stories show just how easy it is for normal people to find themselves in a situation of utter despair, or utter madness.Crime is not rational and there's only so far you can go to protect yourself. The people in our stories are just unlucky. Some are tricked or trapped by the evil intentions of others. Some are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. As we go about our daily lives, shopping, working and meeting friends - crime is the fear that we all share. But we should all take comfort in the fact that violent crimes - however terrible they may be - are still incredibly rare. So, as they say on Crimewatch, don't have nightmares...
