As a distinguished Cornish Quaker - the family wealth came from a shipping business based at Falmouth - she mixed with writers, thinkers, artists, scientists, inventors, explorers, divines and politicians. She began her Journal when still in her teens, and over some thirty-five years she enjoyed and recorded conversations with a succession of brilliant Victorians - Mill and Carlyle, Wordsworth, Hartley Coleridge, Tennyson, Elizabeth Fry, Holman Hunt, and the Polar explorers Belcher and Ross among them. This volume also includes some of her fascinating letters.

Book Women Who Made Money

Download or read book Women Who Made Money written by Margaret Dawes and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a usual kind of book about banking or bankers. The authors were interested in the lives of women who joined in partnership banking. These women began working in what had been a male preserve before ideas of feminism and women's rights had suggested this as a possibility. They were feminists before feminism existed! Responsibility as partners in banks did not absolve them from their duties as wives and mothers. So we hear about domestic matters - childbirth, sickness, dinner services, furniture, watercolour painting and riding accidents. There is also a background of links with commerce and business which made the British economy so vibrant and dynamic at this formative time. The banking industry grew and developed in response to the needs of enterprise in shipping, textile manufacture, mining, engineering and general commerce. In short, these bankers created the art of multi-tasking. The banks and bankers described here came from different backgrounds within the parameters of comfortable middle-class families, rooted in local communities and enterprises. This book is full of banking history and characters and mercifully light on references to subprime lending, liquidity ratios, securitisation, or even bonuses. This is an excellent time for it.

Book The Dustman Family of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties Ohio

Download or read book The Dustman Family of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties Ohio written by Roy C. Ritter III and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johan Martin Dostmann was born in 1730 in Nassig, Germany, and today his descendants can be found throughout the United States of America. One of them is Roy C. Ritter III, and he traces his family’s origins in this detailed history. Dostmann immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1752 with his sister and several friends and cousins, and so began the story of an enduring German-American family. After some time in Frederick County, Maryland, and Washington County, Pennsylvania, the family, which became known as Dustman, took advantage of the settlement opportunities in the newly formed Connecticut Western Reserve of Ohio, joining the state’s earliest pioneers. Johan Martin Dostmann died before that journey, but his surviving children and grandchildren made their mark in Ohio, particularly in Trumbull and Mahoning counties, where they prospered. Covering the first four generations of the Dustman family, this book will be a valuable resource for the descendants of Johan Martin Dostmann.

Book The Elusive Quest of the Spiritual Malcontent

Download or read book The Elusive Quest of the Spiritual Malcontent written by Timothy C. F. Stunt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timothy C. F. Stunt has gathered a range of his essays, both published and unpublished in a collection of largely biographical studies. His subjects range from discontented Quakers hesitating over their identity, to respectable Anglicans who were fascinated with the charismatic phenomena of tongue speaking and healing. Some of the characters with whom he is concerned can be described as "mavericks" on account of their strikingly individualist inclinations. Occasionally their unpredictability takes on a quasi-comic identity, which could even qualify them to be described as "loose cannons." On the other hand, some of them like Edward Irving, Norris Groves, and John Darby played a crucial part in the development of nineteenth-century evangelicalism. In their quest for the ideal church of their dreams, they were often disappointed but one cannot but admire the single-mindedness of their quest.
