Various members of the troupe begin to pull out-this latest disaster the last straw. Those now left have been faithful followers of Dusty, the owner, together with his long-suffering wife, Alta, former trapeze artists, with their dream of creating a show greater than The Greatest Show on Earth, a giant celebration at the heart of the city. Those left have nowhere else to go: Donovan, a giant; Curran, a midget: Billy Bigelow, a magician-cum-handyman and electrician. Into this scene of general disarray, Dusty brings Amazing Grace, who dances with snakes, and the Kid, who might be her brother. She is the one, Dusty is convinced, who will change their luck.

Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the Scopes Trial and the battle over evolution and creation in America's schools In the summer of 1925, the sleepy hamlet of Dayton, Tennessee, became the setting for one of the twentieth century's most contentious courtroom dramas, pitting William Jennings Bryan and the anti-Darwinists against a teacher named John Scopes, represented by Clarence Darrow and the ACLU, in a famous debate over science, religion, and their place in public education. That trial marked the start of a battle that continues to this day-in cities and states throughout the country. Edward Larson's classic Summer for the Gods -- winner of the Pulitzer Prize in History -- is the single most authoritative account of this pivotal event. An afterword assesses the state of the battle between creationism and evolution, and points the way to how it might potentially be resolved.

Book The World of Carnival

Download or read book The World of Carnival written by Gladys Swan and published by . This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapbook, you will find the first chapters of Carnival for the Gods, and the four novels that form a sequence from Gladys Swan's comic fantasy, first published in the Vintage Contemporaries Series. The World of Carnival continues with its original inhabitants and their struggles against the odds: Alta and Dusty, who dream big; the midget Curran, who undertakes a journey at the behest of the acrobat Elise, whose son has gone mad (Small Wonder); Amazing Grace, whose talents as a performer bring gasps from her audience, lead her to the challenge of creating herself (Dancing with Snakes); the Kid, who, after a long search, sets out to find the Seventh City, picking up along the way a melancholy Jew, who grew up there (The Dream Seekers). And, finally, a return to Alta, who finds herself drawn back to the circus to follow another set of dreams (Down to Earth). The series of novels explores the relations between life and art, reality and illusion, the openness to possibility and the capacity for the renewal of energies within a culture. It is the writer's major work, and it is her dream that the sequence may one day be published.

Book The Gods of Entropy

  • Author : Deryck Hockley
  • Publisher : FriesenPress

Download or read book The Gods of Entropy written by Deryck Hockley and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 997 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gods of Entropy and the Fifth Yin follows Dyfed Lucifer, the only descendant of the multi-dimensional “Hyperborean Masters of the Little Known Universe” to be born on an “earth” that has a history remarkably similar to ours. His mission is to reduce the suffering of humans (the hoi polloi – the fuzz on the peach and the salt of the Earth) and give them the tools to think independently. Standing in the way of Dyfed’s mission are the Haploids, the world’s executive power elite who captain almost every ship of state. These Haploids are the acolytes of myth and responsible for cults, political ideology fallacies, and a corporate establishment that keeps the hoi polloi slaves to debt. Thankfully, as an immortal, Dyfed has time on his hands for this epic quest that extends from early history to a gloomy future that (despite the author’s disclaimer) bears a striking resemblance to the world at large today. Witty, sagacious, and downright spicy, The Gods of Entropy combines satire and surrealism to hold a mirror up to our own civilization that will make readers alternatively chortle and gasp, and most importantly, reflect.

Book The Carnival Stage

Download or read book The Carnival Stage written by José I. Suárez and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The application of Bakhtin's critical theories to Gil Vicente has helped in understanding the genre and plot-compositional traits and sources of Vicente's drama. Until now, these have been virtually ignored by Vicentine scholars, most of whom have limited themselves to biographical/historical approaches in an effort to explain the playlets as products of a particular epoch - the Middle Ages and/or the Renaissance - and the corresponding literary modes. The author concludes that it is not the subjective memory of the playwrights but the objective memory of the genre in which they compose their plays that preserves its fundamental characteristics through the centuries, characteristics that derive from the incursion of the popular element into the realm of literary creation." "Direct in its presentation, this study presents a concise and scholarly synthesis of Peninsular drama from its origins and the impact that the popular element had on its formation, and it will continue to be regarded as an original facet in the overall complexity of Vicentine studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Last Carnival

Download or read book The Last Carnival written by J. Lilly and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-10-08 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Spring of 19- I took a sabbatical from the University of C-, over-the-seas branch, Kawagawa, Cipan where I had been working towards the postponement of a doctoral degree in the dual fields of comparative histrionics and cryptophilology. The cause of my departure: that I would pursue an ancillary degree elsewhere, although some may have observed that I had rather quietly suffered a nervous breakdown. The simple, more economical pretext, however, was that I was maddeningly overworked and shamefully underemployed. Repatriated, I finally took a job in S. Hollywood with a talent agency founded by a wealthy, enlightened Japanese autodidact of Western Culture, or "Sei Bun" as Kennichi-"Ken" to his friends-Chibita-"Chibi" by the same friends-liked to call it, who claimed, but could never quite document, a connection with his own royal family. Ken had entered the film business with the intention of "Making Movies That Make The Differences And Represent A Goal Of Universal Culture," a letterhead slogan that fell just short of the felicitous. He idolized the silver-screen impresario Alexandr Korda, and would have emulated him. Accordingly, Kenchan had acquired a reputation for his readiness to buy, at cut-rate prices, the rights to stories or, should we say, fragments of stories, incomplete or in a state of hopeless disarray, ones such as other agencies would have refused as unrepresentable. In principle we operated much like corporate marauders, but in the reverse: We bought up under-producing literary properties and then reassembled them into "marginally" profitable entities.

Book excerpt: Some call it purgatory, others know it as the in-between, but for those poor souls who are trapped there eternally, it is simply The Carnival -- a macabre mockery where night is never-ending, and a sadistic creature known as The Fool reigns unchallenged. And The Fool has one rule: No one leaves The Carnival. Ever.Christopher, the latest arrival thrust reluctantly through the gates, is certain that he doesn't belong there, and he's damn sure he's not staying. But if he's to stand any chance of getting out, he's going to have to trust a girl who can't possibly be what she claims. With her help, he must confront not only The Fool, but his own dark past.---WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:"A wild ride that urges you to consume the words as quickly as your brain can process.""I didn't know a book so macabre could be such a fun read.""The Carnival of Night is an excellent piece of modern fiction that is reminiscent of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked this way comes."

Book excerpt: In 1930 Dumézil wrote an article in which he defended the Indo-European character of the Indian varnas. In 1986 he was completing his final 25 Esquisses, research proposals the aim of which was to allow his model of the 'idéologie tripartie' of Indo-European traditions to be applied to his 'disciples'. According to this model Indo-European traditions were typified by a threefold division into functions of society, the world of the gods, and the heroic traditions. These were the functions of sovereignty, power and 'fertility'. This theoretical model was elaborated by Dumézil in a large number of books and articles. Between 1930 and 1986 he broadened enormously the amount of data on which his model was based. To do so he had regularly to adapt and reformulate his model. This was not without consequences for the material which he had interpreted earlier on. In this study a detailed description is given of this process of reformulation and reinterpretation and the conclusion is that the totality of the various models does not, despite its aesthetic attraction, satisfy the criteria which should be set for scientific models.
