Book Historical Dictionary of Guinea

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Guinea written by Mohamed Saliou Camara and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most significant thing about Guinea is its potential. It is strategically located in West Africa, with a well-educated and hardworking population, and endowed with considerable natural resources, indeed, enough to make it reasonably affluent if properly utilized. But this potential has never really been tapped, due mainly to bad politics with military men following a charismatic politician, until finally democracy has been achieved. So, more than half-a-century after achieving independence, the question remains unanswered: which way will Guinea turn? This fifth edition of Historical Dictionary of Guinea covers the full scope of Guinea’s history. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 800 cross-referenced entries on key events, leaders, governmental, international, religious, and other private organizations, policies, political movements and parties, economic elements and many other areas that have shaped the country’s trajectory. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Guinea.

Book International Migration Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vincent Chetail
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-03-29
  • ISBN : 019164546X
  • Pages : 478 pages

Download or read book International Migration Law written by Vincent Chetail and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Migration Law provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of the international legal framework applicable to the movement of persons across borders. The role of international law in this field is complex, and often ambiguous: there is no single source for the international law governing migration. The current framework is scattered throughout a wide array of rules belonging to numerous fields of international law, including refugee law, human rights law, humanitarian law, labour law, trade law, maritime law, criminal law, and consular law. This textbook therefore cuts through this complexity by clearly demonstrating what the current international law is, and assessing how it operates. The book offers a unique and comprehensive mapping of this growing field of international law. It brings together and critically analyses the disparate conventional, customary, and soft law on a broad variety of issues, such as irregular migration, human trafficking, refugee protection, labour migration, non-discrimination, regional free movement schemes, and global migration governance. It also offers a particular focus on important groups of migrants, namely migrant workers, refugees, and smuggled migrants. It maps the current status of the law governing their movement, providing a thorough critical analysis of the various stands of international law which apply to them, suggesting how the law may continue to develop in the future. This book provides the perfect introduction to all aspects of migration and international law.

Book The Military and Colonial Destruction of the Roman Landscape of North Africa 1830 1900

Download or read book The Military and Colonial Destruction of the Roman Landscape of North Africa 1830 1900 written by Michael Greenhalgh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French invaded Algeria in 1830, and found a landscape rich in Roman remains, which they proceeded to re-use to support the constructions such as fortresses, barracks and hospitals needed to fight the natives (who continued to object to their presence), and to house the various colonisation projects with which they intended to solidify their hold on the country, and to make it both modern and profitable. Arabs and Berbers had occasionally made use of the ruins, but it was still a Roman and Early Christian landscape when the French arrived. In the space of two generations, this was destroyed, just as were many ancient remains in France, in part because “real” architecture was Greek, not Roman.

Book Framing French Culture

Download or read book Framing French Culture written by Natalie Edwards and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout this book, the concept of framing is used to look at art, photography, scientific drawings and cinema as visually constituted, spatially bounded productions. The way these genres relate to that which exists beyond the frame, by means of plastic, chemically transposed, pencil-sketched or moving images allows us to decipher the particular language of the visual and at the same time circumscribe the dialectic between presence and absence that is proper to all visual media. Yet, these kinds of re-framing owe their existence to the ruptures and upheavals that marked the demise of certain discursive systems in the past, announcing the emergence of others that were in turn overturned.
