Book excerpt: Welcome to Marshmallow Hollow, Maine, a holiday mystery, where it's all Christmas all the time and murder is hung by the chimney with care... I'm at it again, and only a day after my last run-in with a killer! Hobbs and I are growing closer and closer, but there always seems to be a mystery waiting for us just around the corner, nipping at our heels and thwarting our hot romance. A very nice waiter named Joey Scarpetti, from the Marshmallow Hollow Ski Lodge is dead, and it happened in my backyard in my pear tree, no less. So what's a girl to do but investigate? On top of that, I catch Hobbs having coffee with a very stylish, flawlessly beautiful, natural blonde (hair envy here!), and I'm in a bit of a tizzy. But when I have a gruesome vision of a young woman, so grief-stricken she wants to leave this plane forever, I know I have to find out if my vision is from a future event and if so, is there a way I can prevent a horrible tragedy? All bets are off the table as I hunt for a killer and try and save a young woman's life!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the Welsh city’s history of crime with these true stories and photos. There is no shortage of harrowing episodes in Cardiff’s past, and this fascinating book recalls many grisly events and sad or unsavory individuals whose conduct throws a harsh light on the history of the city. Among the many shocking cases the author describes are: The murder of a Welsh Protestant by an Irish Catholic that provoked rioting The double life of a respectable widow poisoned with arsenic The exploits of a “Jack the Ripper” killer in Cardiff’s back streets The throat-slashing revenge of the Cardiff Race Track Gang The still-mysterious wartime murder of Alice Pittman The case of the Somalian sailor arrested for the brutal slaying of an elderly shopkeeper The demise of Granville Jenkins, who was cut to ribbons by a machete The accidental—or deliberate?—electrocution of Mrs. Darling This chronicle of Cardiff’s hidden past and the history the city would prefer to forget is compelling reading for anyone interested in the dark side of human nature.

Book excerpt: Thoreau about the dropout Thoreau: "I moved into the woods because I desired to live with reflection, to come closer to actual, real life, to see if I could not learn what it had to teach, lest, when it came to dying, I should find I had not lived. I did not want to live what was not life; life is so precious. Nor did I want to practice renunciation unless it became unavoidably necessary. I wanted to live deeply, to suck out all the marrow of life, to live so hard and spartanly that everything that was not life was put to flight." Gröls Classics - English Edition

Book Walden and On the Duty of Civil Disobedience

Download or read book Walden and On the Duty of Civil Disobedience written by Henry David Thoreau and published by First Avenue Editions. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these two American literary classics, Henry David Thoreau offers readers his experiences and thoughts on how to live a more fulfilling life and stand up for what is right. Having spent two years living in solitude at Walden Pond, he stresses the importance of a quiet, reflective life and the rewards of a nonmaterialistic existence in Walden. His essay "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience" discusses his belief in nonviolent protests against an unjust government--in particular, he attacks the US government's approval of slavery and support for the Mexican-American War. These unabridged versions were first published in 1854 and 1849, respectively, but their ideas are timeless.

Book The Essential Thoreau

Download or read book The Essential Thoreau written by Henry David Thoreau and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 1014 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected here in this omnibus edition are Henry David Thoreau's most important works including A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers; The Selected Essays of Henry David Thoreau, including Civil Disobedience; and of course, Walden. A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers is both a remembrance of an intensely spiritual moment in Henry David Thoreau's life and a memoriam to his older brother who accompanied him on the trip shortly before his death. Full of fascinating literary musings and philosophical speculations, this book is a true precursor to Walden. The Selected Essays contains nineteen essays (including Civil Disobedience). Thoreau was one of America's best known and most influential writers. His work has helped shape the American Discourse and had a lasting effect on the environmental movement in America. Walden is one of the best-known non-fiction books ever written by an American. It details Thoreau's sojourn in a cabin near Walden Pond, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. Walden was written with expressed seasonal divisions. Thoreau hoped to isolate himself from society in order to gain a more objective understanding of it. Simplicity and self-reliance were Thoreau's other goals, and the whole project was inspired by Transcendentalist philosophy. This book is full of fascinating musings and reflections. As pertinent and relevant today as it was when it was first written.

Download or read book Walden and Other Writings written by Henry David Thoreau and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry David Thoreau's vision of personal freedom is indelibly etched on the American consciousness. 'We need the tonic of wildness,' Thoreau wrote in Walden, and by turning his back on town amenities to build a house on Walden Pond in 1845, he helped shape our notions of the individual, subsistence, and a moral relation to nature. Raising white beans and potatoes that he sold to his Concord neighbors, he stayed for two years; his book records both the philosophy he developed while living alone and the facts of his everyday life. Included here with the complete text of Walden are selections from Thoreau's first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers; 'A Plea for Captain John Brown,' his eloquent defense of the American abolitionist's rebellion at Harper's Ferry, and such masterpieces as his famous essay 'Civil Disobedience,' in which he describes a night spent in prison for refusing to pay a poll tax to a government that condoned slavery.
