Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the lines of standing stones that until now have been the neglected wonders of prehistoric Europe, rows that were foci of rituals in Britain, Ireland and Brittany for over two thousand years. Places such as Carnac in Brittany and Callanish in the Hebrides are visited by many visitors each year, but before now there has been no book that seriously explains the history, significance and background to these impressive sites. Aubrey Burl shows that the settings vary from pairs of isolated stones in the far south-west of Ireland to networks of long lines in Scotland, Dartmoor and Brittany, and describes the types in a sequence of architectural chapters that stress the increasing social and commercial connections between regions hundred of miles apart. He uses information from a wide variety of sources - excavation reports, megalithic art, astronomical analyses and legends - to provide explanations of why the rows were erected, when, and what they may have been used for.

Excerpt: The Carnac stones are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites around the French village of Carnac, in Brittany, consisting of alignments, dolmens, tumuli and single menhirs. The more than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones were hewn from local rock and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany, and are the largest such collection in the world. Local tradition claims that the reason they stand in such perfectly straight lines is that they are a Roman legion turned to stone by Merlin or Saint Cornelius - Brittany has its own local versions of the Arthurian cycle. A Christian legend associated with the stones held that they were pagan soldiers in pursuit of Pope Cornelius when he turned them to stone. Most of the stones are within the Breton village of Carnac, but some to the east are within La Trinite-sur-Mer. The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as old as 4500 BC. In recent centuries, many of the sites have been neglected, with reports of dolmens being used as sheep shelters, chicken sheds or even ovens. Even more commonly, stones have been removed to make way for roads, or as building materials. The continuing management of the sites remains a controversial topic. There are three major groups of stone rows - Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan - which may have once formed a single group, but have been split up as stones were removed for other purposes....

Download or read book Excavations at Carnac Brittany written by James Miln and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Excavations at Carnac (Brittany): A Record of Archæological Researches in the Bossenno and the Mont Saint Michel IN the summer of 1873 I went on a tour in Brittany for the purpose of seeing some of the antiquities for which it is so famous, my chief object being to visit the celebrated align ments of Carnac. Landing at St. Malo, I proceeded by the beautiful scenery of the Rance to Dinan, and thence on to Morlaix. There a few days were pleasantly passed in making excursions to visit the curious churches and calvaries of St. Thegonnec and St. Guimiliau, and in examining the houses of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries, which are still to be seen in the Grande Rue, and in the Rue des Nobles at Morlaix. These picturesque specimens of Breton architecture usually present their gable ends to the street, each successive storey projecting over the one below it, and they are often adorned with quaint carving on the woodwork. Book Aligning Megalithic Sites of Southern England and Carnac France with Ground Water

Download or read book Aligning Megalithic Sites of Southern England and Carnac France with Ground Water written by David Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses several megalithic sites in southern England and Carnac, France, and their relationship to areas of higher permeability (concentrated flows) within the groundwater. In spite of diverse beliefs and environments, as well as, during different historical periods, various aspects of cultural uniformity prevailed which are associated with this concept. Johnson and his colleagues have investigated sites throughout the United States, Canada, Peru and Chile, as well as, in Europe and East Africa. This data strongly suggests this was an ancient universal human concept which aligned the under, present and spiritual worlds. The English sites include Stonehenge, Avebury Complex, Maiden Castle, Carn Euny Iron Age Village, Drizzlecombe Stone Rows and Cerne Abbas Giant among others. The Carnac sites include the Méne, Kermario, Kerlescan Alignments, the Locmariaquer Megalithic Complex including LaTable des Marchands Dolmen, Grand Menhir Er-Grah and Er-Grah Tumulus and several additional tumulus and dolmens. The book includes one hundred-forty eight colored images including maps and stone features.

Book The Sacred Network

Download or read book The Sacred Network written by Chris H. Hardy and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How sacred sites amplify the energies of consciousness, the earth, and the universe • Examines the web of geometrical patterns linking sacred sites worldwide, with special focus on the sacred network of ley lines in Paris • Unveils the coming state of shared consciousness for humanity fueled by the sacred network • Reveals how consciousness is a tangible form of energy First marked by the standing stones of our megalithic ancestors, the world’s sacred sites are not only places of spiritual energy but also hubs of cosmic energy and earthly energy. Generation upon generation has recognized the power of these sites, with the result that each dominant culture builds their religious structures on the same spots--the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, for example, was constructed over a Temple to Diana that in turn had been built over a stone pillar worshipped by the Gauls. In The Sacred Network, Chris Hardy shows how the world’s sacred sites coincide with the intersections of energetic waves from the earth’s geomagnetic field and how--via their megaliths, temples, and steeples--these sites act as antennae for the energies of the cosmos. Delving deeply in to Paris’s sacred network, she also explores the intricate geometrical patterns created by the alignments of churches and monuments, such as pentagrams and Stars of David. Revealing that consciousness is a tangible energy, she explains how the sacred network is fueling an 8,000-year evolutionary cycle initiated by our megalithic ancestors that will soon culminate in a new state of shared consciousness for humanity.
