Book The Carlyle Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Carlyle Encyclopedia written by Mark Cumming and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Carlyle Encyclopedia focuses primarily on Thomas Carlyle. It reflects the range of his interests and resists stereotyped impression of who he was and what he believed. It covers Carlyle's entire life, without privileging any particular work or period, and locates Carlyle in his time and place, in the context of a rich and challenging age. The Carlyle Encyclopedia also gives a balanced assessment of Jane Welsh Carlyle, which avoids either belittling her or overestimating her achievement. It avoids the reductive and contradictory stereotypes of her which were offered by early biographers of Thomas Carlyle and offers instead a study of her varied friendships and her trenchant observations on contemporary life." "The Carlyle Encyclopedia will interest a variety of readers who concern themselves with literature, social history, the history of ideas, Victorian culture, and Scottish studies."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume represent some of the most recent reconsiderations of the living legacy of Thomas Carlyle from both established and upcoming Carlyle scholars. Readers will have the opportunity to explore the richness of Carlyle's ideals, including the ones which challenge modern sensibilities the most. The essays examine carefully the complexities, difficulties, and contours of Carlyle's political and social vision. They also sample the breadth of Carlyle's thought, along with that of Jane Welsh Carlyle, his wife and fellow intellectual traveler, covering topics from political philosophy and cultural critique to education, historiography, biography, and the vagaries of editing. His roles as a political thinker and professional historian are investigated in depth, in addition to his better-known position as a critic of Victorian mores. Thomas Carlyle truly emerges "resartus" or re-tailored, ready to speak with renewed hope to the weighty concerns of the present. --Book Jacket.

Download or read book The Myth of the State written by Ernst Cassirer and published by Felix Meiner Verlag. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book On Heroes Hero Worship and the Heroic in History

Download or read book On Heroes Hero Worship and the Heroic in History written by Thomas Carlyle and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish writer THOMAS CARLYLE (1795-1881) is perhaps best remembered today for dubbing economics "the dismal science," but in his day he was widely known-and often controversial-for his criticism of the "progress" of the Industrial Revolution, for his satires in the vein of Jonathan Swift, and for his championing of German Romantic poetry to English readers. This 1841 volume collects six of Carlyle's lectures on heroes, which offered a damning critique of the rising faceless corporatism and the denigration of the individual that the Industrial Revolution was promoting. Honoring the power of great men to change history, Carlyle discusses: The hero as divinity: Odin, Paganism, and Scandinavian mythology The hero as prophet: Mahomet and Islam The hero as poet: Dante and Shakespeare The hero as priest: Luther, Reformation by Knox, and Puritanism The hero as man of letters: Johnson, Rousseau, and Burns The hero as king: Cromwell, Napoleon, and modern revolutionism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear and progressive views of history have dominated the popular imagination for the past seventy years in a worldview wedded to the inexorable rise of globalisation and GDP-growth at any cost. However, the end of the Cold War failed to produce the end of history as hoped, a fact brought home to many by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Material wealth and 'Progress’ in the name of ‘social justice’ have not made people happier or more united but quite the opposite. Anxiety, depression, fearfulness, sadness, loneliness and anger have all massively increased since 1970 with the male suicide rate at an all-time high. Western society seems to be divided against itself across every line conceivable: left versus right, women versus men, ‘non-whites’ versus ‘whites’, globalists versus populists, ‘the elites’ versus ‘the people’, people who think that men can be women and vice versa versus those who insist that they cannot, and so on. Seventy-three percent of Americans believe their country is on ‘the wrong track’, with similar views reflected in Britain and across Europe. The Prophets of Doom explores eleven thinkers who not only dared to contradict the dominant linear and progressive view of history, but also predicted many of the political and social maladies through which we are living.
