Book The Big Book of World Chess Championships

Download or read book The Big Book of World Chess Championships written by Andre Schulz and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilhelm Steinitz, the winner of the first official World Chess Championship in 1886, would have rubbed his eyes in disbelieve if he could have seen how popular chess is today. With millions of players all around the world, live internet transmissions of major and minor competitions, and educational programs in thousands of schools, chess has truly become a global passion. And what would Steinitz, who had financial problems his whole life and died in poverty, have thought of the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, who became a multi-millionaire in his early twenties just by playing great chess? The history of the World Chess Championship reflects these enormous changes, and German chess journalist Andre Schulz tells the stories of the title fights in fascinating detail: the historical and social backgrounds, the prize money and the rules, the seconds and other helpers, and the psychological wars on and off the board. Meet some of the world’s sharpest minds as they clash in what has been called ‘the cruellest sport’ and drink in their tales: the lonely geniuses, the flamboyant boulevardiers, the Nazi-sympathizers, the communist darlings and a troubled boy from Brooklyn. Relive the magic of Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Tal, Karpov, Kasparov, Bobby Fischer and the others. All great champions, but so different in character and playing style. Schulz’s chronicle is an absorbing evocation of the battles they fought. He has also selected one defining game from each championship, and he explains the moves of the Champions, and the ideas behind the moves, in a way that is easily accessible for amateur players and highly instructive for beginners as well. This is a book that no true chess lover wants to miss.

The young attacking genius Mihail Tal, the "Wizard of Riga," put the magic back into the game by defeating Botvinnik with spectacular tactics in one of the most dramatic and celebrated world championship matches of all time. This is Tal's own classic work on the contest. In it he sets the stage and explains every one of the 21 games, telling both the on- and off-the-board story of this tatanic clash of styles and thought. Take a trip with the Magician from Riga as he invites you to share his thoughts and feelings as he does battle for the world title. "Mikhail Tal's splendid account of his world championship match victory is one of the masterpieces of the golden age of annotation - before insights and feelings and flashes of genius were reduced to mere moves and Informant symbols. This is simply the best book written about a world championship match by a contestant. That shouldn't be a surprise because Tal was the finest writer to become world champion." - From the Foreword by International Grandmaster Andy Soltis

Book Timman s Triumphs

Download or read book Timman s Triumphs written by Jan Timman and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2020-09-05 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Timman is one of the greatest chess players never to win the world title. For many years ‘the Best of the West' belonged to the chess elite, collecting some splendid super tournament victories. Three times Timman was a Candidate for the World Championship and his peak in the world rankings was second place, in 1982. For this definitive collection, Timman has revisited his career and subjected his finest efforts to fresh analysis supported by modern technology. The result is startling and fascinating. From the games that he chose for his Timman's Selected Games (1994, also published as Chess the Adventurous Way), only 10(!) made the cut. Some games that he had been proud of turned out to be flawed, others that he remembered as messy were actually well played. Timman's Triumphs includes wins against greats such as Karpov, Kasparov, Kortchnoi, Smyslov, Tal, Spassky, Bronstein, Larsen and Topalov. The annotations are in the author's trademark lucid style, that happy mix of colourful background information and sharp, crystal-clear explanations. Once again Jan Timman shows that he is not only one of the best players the game has seen, but also as one of the best analysts and writers.

Book Carlsen Vs Caruana

Download or read book Carlsen Vs Caruana written by Niclas Huschenbeth and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn from the Games of the Best Two Chess Players in the World In every sport, there is that one match-up that electrifies the fans. In soccer, you have Ronaldo vs. Messi. In tennis, Federer vs. Nadal. And in chess, there is Carlsen vs. Caruana. The rivalry of reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana began 2010 in the Dutch village Wijk aan Zee and culminated in the World Chess Championship 2018. Over the past years, they have crossed swords 71 times: In classical, rapid and blitz chess. All their games against each other - including the thrilling World Championship match - are thoroughly annotated in this book. GM Niclas Huschenbeth gives detailed move-to-move explanations and decodes the complexities of the game, with the aim to improve the reader's chess understanding. After all, what could be better suited to enhance one's understanding than to study the games of the two best chess players on the planet? From the introduction: What You Will Learn From This Book Have you ever played through a top level chess game and asked yourself "Why in the world did he play that move?" or "This move does not make any sense, what's the idea behind it?" If so, I can completely sympathize. "Learn from the best. Analyze their games. Understand what they are doing and how they are doing it." These were the words of my coach when I was in my youth, aspiring to become a good player myself. And I did. Or rather, I tried. All too often, though, I found myself scratching my head when playing through the games of Kasparov, Kramnik & Co. What was the idea behind this move? Why didn't he play that move instead? Back then, the computers were too weak to be of any help. These days, they are a bit more useful. They tell you the best move and the correct evaluation. But they still do not tell you why. It's like trying to work out a difficult math problem and then just being shown the final solution. No learning happens. I was lucky to have my coach guide me through the jungle that chess often is. But not everybody is so fortunate to have a great coach. This is why I wrote this book. In this book, I decode the sometimes mysterious moves and explain the ideas behind them. To me, chess boils down to two basic skills: understanding and calculation. Finding the right plans and finding ways to execute them - the two go hand in hand. But in training, we often compartmentalize, focusing on one specific topic, let's say "how to play with the bishop pair" or "good knight vs. bad bishop." But chess does not work like that. After all, the beautiful thing about chess games is that you usually have some elements of everything. This is why I always found game analyses to be the most rewarding. You learn about chess as a whole and not about one specific detail. It is not without reason that about every coach recommends the study of one's own games as well as the games of the very best.
