Book Karl Marx

Download or read book Karl Marx written by Shlomo Avineri and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new exploration of Marx as a Jewish thinker presents “a perceptive and fair-minded corrective to superficial treatments” of his life and work (Jonathan Rose, Wall Street Journal). A philosopher, historian, sociologist, economist, current affairs journalist, and editor, Karl Marx was one of the most influential and revolutionary thinkers of modern history. But he is rarely thought of as a Jewish thinker, and his Jewish background is either overlooked or misrepresented. Here, distinguished scholar Shlomo Avineri argues that Marx’s Jewish origins made a significant impression on his work. Marx was born in Trier, then part of Prussia, and his family had enjoyed full emancipation under earlier French control of the area. But then its annexation to Prussia deprived the Jewish population of its equal rights. These developments led to the reluctant conversion of Marx’s father, and similar tribulations radicalized many other Jewish intellectuals of that time. Avineri puts Marx’s Jewish background in its proper and balanced perspective, and traces Marx’s intellectual development in light of the historical, intellectual, and political contexts in which he lived.

Book excerpt: Whether or not we reject the Marxist schema there is little doubt that Marx was a great economist. The three volumes of Capital, contain some pieces of remarkable economic analysis from which modern economists can still learn; however difficult he is to read, there are moments when, like Ricardo and Walras, he can revel in the abstract power of economic reasoning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered one of Marxs most profound monographs and a brilliant history of the proletariat, this 1852 essaywhich originally appeared in Die Revolution magazineis Marxs commentary on the 1851 French coup by Louis Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, overthrowing the constitution of 1848. Most famous as the source of Marxs dictum that history occurs twice, the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce, this work is better known to historians as a vital early discussion of the politics of fascism in the 20th century, which Bonapartes coup anticipated. Students of Marxs philosophy and readers in modern political movements will find this an enlightening read. Prussian philosopher KARL MARX (1818-1883) was a social scientist, historian, and political revolutionary. He is indisputably the most influential socialist thinker to emerge in the 19th century. Although scholars largely ignored him in his own lifetime, his social, economic, and political ideas gained rapid acceptance in the socialist movement after his death.

Book The Poverty of Philosophy

Download or read book The Poverty of Philosophy written by Karl Marx and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the winter of 1846-7 as a response to Proudhon's Système des Contradictions Economique ou Philosophie de la Misère, this is essential background for appreciating Marx's later work, including Capital and his Communist Manifesto. Here, Marx begins to explore such concepts as constituted or synthetic value, the division of labor and machinery, competition and monopoly, strikes and the combination of workmen, and free trade, all of which would later come to play important roles in his social and political philosophy. Anyone wishing to understand Marx's approach to capitalism as an oppressor of the proletariat and as a movement destined to collapse must consider this required reading.
