Written in 1761, and published here for the first time in English, these plays take us behind the scenes as two Northern Italian families and their respective entourages prepare for a fashionable stay in the country, and in the process forsake all their cherished precepts of bourgeois prudence and parsimony. What starts out as a relatively straightforward satire, rather benevolently castigating the middle class for its craven infatuation with appearances, later develops into a scathing indictment of its entire system of values, with each of the three plays contributing an ever bleaker portrayal of social fatuity and mendacity. At the mercy of fashion's every whim, the middle class is mercilessly caught in the act of aping the aristocracy, clumsily grappling with trends it cannot comprehend, ignorant as it is of the underlying codes of savoir-faire. But Goldoni takes comedy's traditional decision of the bourgeoisie's fashion foibles to an extreme which can only be ascribed to sheer comical genius. Indeed, as this tripartite work unfolds, the extent to which Goldoni succeeds in subverting the very constrictions of his favorite genre becomes increasingly evident, the bittersweet finale constituting a fittingly ambivalent rendition of comedy's requisite happy end. The Holiday Trilogy is the first of a series of volumes that Marsilio plans to devote to the works of the great Venetian playwright, under the editorship of Franco Fido, to commemorate the bicentennial of Goldoni's death. Anthony Oldcorn's version of the Trilogy received one of the 1993 Kayden Translation Awards.

As Jackson I. Cope demonstrates in this study, some Italian dramatists reacted to the widespread success of this genre with a counterparadigm, a comedy that exploits secrecy as form. In both historically and critically engaging fashion, Cope identifies and examines this major development in Italian theater. Though outwardly similar to New Comedy with its characteristically harmonious closure, this essentially anti-Plautine form employs a secret--known by the audience but unequally shared among the players--to introduce a radical discrepancy between simultaneous stories unfolding in a single action doubly understood. The result is a plot that is misleading at the surface, contingent and unfinished at its end. The audience, in a position of enforced collusion with regard to the secret, becomes a formal ingredient in the production. The play, more cynical than carnivalesque, opens onto vistas of disruption and deception rather than closing on a note of renewed social harmony. Cope's close and original readings of both classic and lesser-known plays by Machiavelli, Ruzante, Cecchi, Grazzini, Fagiuoli, Maggi, and others follow this peculiarly Italian, anti-Plautine paradigm through variations across three centuries to its masterful and complex culmination in Carlo Goldoni's villeggiatura trilogy. Establishing a new comedic canon that demands a revision of Italian dramatic history and the history of European dramatic theory, Secret Sharers in Italian Comedy makes an important contribution to Italian studies and will also attract readers among theater scholars in English, comparative literature, and drama.

The book provides a framework for examining the director’s career that is expansive rather than restrictive, using Goldoni and Arlecchino servitore di due padroni as a through-line for Strehler’s fifty-year career at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano. This research defines Strehler’s multifaceted style and brings to light interrelationships among his various works, creating a base from which a variety of subsequent critical inquiries can be made. It also establishes Strehler’s identity within the larger scope of the Italian theatre as a whole. Finally, it creates the critical challenge of finding more expansive notions of directorial style and concept that unite diverse ideologies without delimiting our understanding of the director. Crucial to understanding Strehler’s work with Arlecchino servitore di due padroni is his consistent reinterpretation of the play, which received no less than five distinct productions during Strehler’s lengthy career. His repeated reworking of existing productions provides a baseline for examining what elements were maintained and what elements changed or evolved. The four key influences that defined Strehler’s aesthetic in his work with Arlecchino were commedia dell’Arte, Bertolt Brecht, “refractive theatricality” and Jacques Copeau. Through these productions, Strehler created a dialogue with his audience and helped change the reputation of Carlo Goldoni both in his own country and abroad.

Goldoni (1707-1793) was one of the most prolific playwrights who ever lived, having written over 250 works during a career of nearly 50 years. He's best-known outside Italy for some of his earliest comedies, including The Servant of Two Masters and The Venetian Twins, farces based on the traditions of commedia dell'arte but we have to look to his mature works for the truly Goldonian comedy. There's a wealth of subtlety and insight in these beautifully constructed and astutely observed studies of everyday life in 18th Century Italy and this book seeks to introduce them to a wider English-speaking public. The introduction gives a background to the playwright's life and career, and is followed by an analysis of 12 of his plays from different periods in his life. The focus is on the comedies, rather than his unsuccessful tragedies or the many opera libretti he wrote. Goldoni's comedies are varied in style and feel, developing from scenarios derived from the commedia dell'arte, through transitional attempts to create original characters and situations, to the late plays which are masterpieces of naturalistic theatre. The plays studied are: The Servant of Two Masters, The Venetian Twins, The Comic Theatre, The Mistress of the Inn, The War, The Campiello, The Villeggiatura Trilogy, The Chioggian Squabbles, The Fan and The Beneficent Boor. Each is looked at in terms of characters, plot, language and their place in Goldoni's theatrical development. An interpretation of what he was trying to achieve and how the plays can succeed on the stage is given for each of the plays. This is a book for the general reader and anyone who has an interest in Goldoni or the history of theatre.
