Download or read book Hooligans written by Nick Lowles and published by Milo Books Ltd. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For forty years, the scourge of hooliganism has blighted Britain's national game. Organised gangs from almost every town and city in the nation have used football as the arena for violent clashes in an unofficial contest for supremacy. They have rioted, wrecked, maimed and even killed. Yet they have remained largely anonymous, a reviled yet intriguing sub-sect of society. · Who are the hooligan gangs of Great Britain? · Where do they come from and how do they organise? · Who are the principal players - past and present? These questions and many more are answered in Hooligans, the first volume of a unique and comprehensive two-part reference guide to the most ingrained and active soccer yob network in the world. Packed with photos and informative profiles of the gangs both large and small, Hooligans also documents the myths, the nicknames, the victims, the localities, the battles and the police operations. Combining hard fact with occasional touches of black humour, and intense research with first-person recollections, Hooligans covers the whole spectrum of the gangs from Aberdeen to Luton ... the Barnsley Five-O and their vicious slashing at the hands of Middlesbrough ... Paul Dodd, England's self-styled "Number One" hooligan ... the combined force of the Dundee Utility ... the riots of the Leeds Service Crew ... Benny's Mob, the Main Firm, the Lunatic Fringe, the Bastard Squad - they're all here, together with numerous photos of mobs, fights and riots. "Packed to the brim with scrupulous research, hard-hitting interviews and black humour, this is the final word on terrace yobbery." FRONT magazine "The real history of soccer violence." LOADED "A comprehensive look at some of Britain's most notorious hooligan factions." THE LADS MAG

Book Red or Dead

  • Author : David Peace
  • Publisher : Melville House
  • Release : 2014-05-27
  • ISBN : 1612193692
  • Pages : 738 pages

Download or read book Red or Dead written by David Peace and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Editors' Choice "[T]he stuff of great literature." —The New York Times | "Red or Dead is a winner." —The Washington Post The place where the swinging sixties started – Liverpool, England, birthplace of the Beatles – wasn’t so swinging. Amid industrial blight and a bad economy, the port town’s shipping industry was going bust and there was widespread unemployment, with no assistance from a government tightening its belt. Even the Beatles moved to London. Into these hard times walked Bill Shankly, a former Scottish coal miner who took over the city’s perpetually last-place soccer team. He had a straightforward work ethic and a favorite song – a silly pop song done by a local band, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Soon he would have entire stadiums singing along, tens of thousands of people all dressed in the team color red . . . as Liverpool began to win . . . And soon, too, there was something else those thousands of people would chant as one: Shank-lee, Shank-lee . . . In Red or Dead, the acclaimed writer David Peace tells the stirring story of the real-life working-class hero who lifted the spirits of an entire city in turbulent times. But Red or Dead is more than a fictional biography of a real man, and more than a thrilling novel about sports. It is an epic novel that transcends those categories, until there’s nothing left to call it but – as many of the world’s leading newspapers already have – a masterpiece.

Book The Game of Our Lives

Download or read book The Game of Our Lives written by David Goldblatt and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award 2015 In the last two decades football in Britain has made the transition from a peripheral dying sport to the very centre of our popular culture, from an economic basket-case to a booming entertainment industry. What does it mean when football becomes so central to our private and political lives? Has it enriched us or impoverished us? In this sparkling book David Goldblatt argues that no social phenomenon tracks the momentous economic, social and political changes of the post-Thatcherite era in a more illuminating manner than football, and no cultural practice sheds more light on the aspirations and attitudes of our long boom and now calamitous bust. A must-read for the thinking football fan, The Game of Our Lives will appeal to readers of Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby and Inverting the Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson. It will also be relished by readers of British social history such as Austerity Britain by David Kynaston. 'Brilliantly incisive. Goldblatt is not merely the best football historian writing today, he is possibly the best there has ever been. Goldblatt's book could hardly be more impressive' Sunday Times

Book Twenty Football Towns

Book excerpt: In our world of global superstar footballers, it’s easy to forget the grassroots of a sport where loyalty to a hometown club is often rock solid – and counts for everything. Even as local communities come under threat, football fandom still pulls us together. But why is this? What is the special magic that connects towns and teams? For many of us, the local club offers it all: passion, hope, heartache, drama. And a sense of belonging. The town where we grew up and all the places we’ve lived are the bedrock of our lives, and memories of seeing the local team play are inextricably intertwined with our sense of place and identity. Steve Leach spends a year visiting the twenty towns and clubs that are special to him. He celebrates the distinctiveness of these places, the fascinating differences between Lincoln and Leyton, Barrow and Birmingham, Macclesfield and Morecambe – towns and teams that may not be glamorous, but they are unique and, more importantly, they are home.

Book From Despair to Delirium

Download or read book From Despair to Delirium written by Howard Falshaw and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began as a series of blog posts, each post based on the most recent Carlisle United match. It charts the club's decline in the 2021-2022 season to a point in February 2022 when the club found itself in the League Two relegation zone. The return of Carlisle-born former manager Paul Simpson saw the club embark on a dramatic revival which resulted in Carlisle United comfortably avoiding relegation. The author was present at many of those games that ensured the team's climb to safety. Following retirement in July 2022, the author was in a position to buy season tickets for himself and his son, meaning that they were able to attend about 75% of the club's games in the 2022-2023 season, clocking up well over 7,000 miles in the process. in addition to the physical journey, It was a remarkable metaphorical journey for the club. Mild expectation grew into optimism, grew into ambition, grew into expectation, before the remarkable denouement that saw Carlisle win an unlikely promotion to League One in the most dramatic fashion, via a penalty shoot-out in the play-off final at Wembley. This book recounts that two-season journey blow-by-blow, each post written within two or three days of the relevant game and not revised with the benefit of hindsight. It is an essential read for any supporter of Carlisle United, but will also resonate with any supporter of a lower-league football club who has endured years (sometimes decades) of disappointment, despair and frustration before achieving that brief, but precious, moment in the sun.

In the 1970's NASA's Pioneer satellites discovered a new planetary body in the far regions of our solar system using its infrared equipment. NASA growing concerned about how this planet would affect our world sent out another infrared satellite named IRAS in 1983 to scan the universe in infrared. Its 10 month mission re-discovered the planetary body called Planet 10 or X in Roman numerals. This Planet is already having a disastrous effect on the earth due to its huge size and gravitational pull but can only be seen by cryogenically cooled equipment. Not only is the Earth under threat from this intruder Planet, NASA is tracking a number of near earth objects, the highest threat coming from the asteroid Apophis which will either skim past the earth on Friday 13th April 2029 or crash into us creating a series of near extinction events. Realising that people would need an explanation on why severe earth changes were happening The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was formed in 1988 to provide a false but believable narrative and gain the time needed for alternative power structures to take shape. These are; The Bilderburg Group, The World Economic Forum, The United Nations and the World Health Organisation who are now positioning themselves to become a future government-in waiting dominating our own democratically elected national governments when these catastrophic events play out. This world government will be controlled by a man the bible calls the Antichrist who will run a new financial system based on Central Bank Digital Currencies. This system will go global by 2030 and will replace all cash and card transactions. No-one will be able to buy or sell without his evil mark. Just before this system in fully operational Christian believers will be caught up to meet Christ in the air in an event called 'The Rapture' just before a terrible time on earth lasting seven years called ' The Great Tribulation' begins. This Book will also look at how the Vaccine injured are being completely ignored.
