They reflect the author’s belief that the Holocaust transcends traditional patterns of historical understanding and requires an epistemologically distinct approach. One can no longer assume that actors as well as historians are operating in the same conceptual universe, sharing the same criteria of rational discourse. This is particularly true of victims and perpetrators, whose memories shape the distortions of historical narrative in ways often diametrically opposed. The essays are divided into three groups. The first group talks about anti-Semitism in the context of the 1930s and the ideologies that drove the Nazi regime. The second group concentrates on the almost unbelievably different perceptions of the "Final Solution," with particularly illuminating discussions of the Judenrat, or Jewish council. The third group considers the Holocaust as the subject of narrative and historical memory. Diner focuses above all on perspectives: the very notions of rationality and irrationality are seen to be changeable, depending on who is applying them. And because neither rational nor irrational motives can be universally assigned to participants in the Holocaust, Diner proposes, from the perspective of the victims, the idea of the counterrational. His work is directed toward developing a theory of Holocaust historiography and offers, clearly and coherently, the highest level of reflection on these problems.

Im Laufe seines Lebens hat Carl Schmitt sich zu den vielfältigsten Themengebieten geäußert. Auffallend – und daher auch immer diskussionswürdig – bleiben in diesem Zusammenhang die Inkonsistenz, gar Widersprüchlichkeit und Sinnverschiebungen seiner Begriffe. Bis heute ist daher unklar, ob es einen gemeinsamen Bezugspunkt gibt, der das Schmittsche Werk zusammenhält. Der vorliegende Essay hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, den mit Schmitt untrennbar verbundenen Dezisionismus genauer zu untersuchen, da er sich als eine Art Leitmotiv in vielen seiner Schriften wiederfindet. „Ich habe eine merkwürdige Art von Passivität. Daß ich für meine Person in den Ruf gekommen bin, Dezisionist zu sein, ist mir eigentlich unverständlich. Ich glaube, man muß eine so große Entfernung von jeder Freude an der Entscheidung als solcher haben, wie ich sie habe, um eine Theorie des Dezisionismus zu entwickeln. Der typische Dezisionist, der mit Begeisterung entscheidet, wird nie eine Philosophie oder Theorie des Dezisionismus entwickeln. Ich kann mich, was mich betrifft, an keine derartige Entscheidung erinnern“ (Noack 1993: 168). Die unterschiedliche Bedeutung von Entscheidung wird nicht nur am Gegensatz vom Schmittschen Privatleben zu seinen Schriften deutlich, sondern stellt – so der wissenschaftliche Kanon – auch eine werkimmanente Inkohärenz dar. Unterschiedliche Entscheidungskonzepte spiegeln sich in seinen Arbeiten wieder: Die politische Entscheidung ist zu unterscheiden von der staatsrechtlichen, und die staatsrechtliche wiederum von der gesetzgeberischen.

In so doing, it takes on board Schmitt's critique of the condition of order in late modernity, and considers Schmitt's continued relevance. Consideration is given to the two devices Schmitt deploys, the Grossraum and the Partisan, and argues that neither concept lives up to its claim to transcend or reform Schmitt's pessimistic history of the state. The author concludes that Schmitt's continuing value lies in his provocative historical critique, rather than his conceptual innovation.
