Department of Homeland Security and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the millions of Americans who have physical, medical, sensory or cognitive disabilities, emergencies such as fires, floods and acts of terrorism present a real challenge. The same challenge also applies to the elderly and other special needs populations. Protecting yourself and your family when disaster strikes requires planning ahead. This booklet will help you get started. Discuss these ideas with your family, friends and/or your personal care attendant, or anyone else in your support network and prepare an emergency plan. Post the plan where everyone will see it, keep a copy with you and make sure everyone involved in your plan has a copy. Where will you, your family, your friends or personal care attendants be when an emergency or disaster strikes? You, and those you care about, could be anywhere – at home, work, school or in transit. How will you find each other? Will you know your loved ones will be safe? Emergencies and disasters can strike quickly and without warning and can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services – water, gas, electricity or telephones – were cut off? Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone right away. You are in the best position to plan for your own safety as you are best able to know your functional abilities and possible needs during and after an emergency or disaster situation. You can cope with disaster by preparing in advance with your family and care attendants. You will need to create a personal support network and complete a personal assessment. You will also need to follow the four preparedness steps listed in this booklet. 1. Get informed 2. Make a plan 3. Assemble a kit 4. Maintain your plan and kit.

Book Care of Children Exposed to the Traumatic Effects of Disaster

Download or read book Care of Children Exposed to the Traumatic Effects of Disaster written by Jon A. Shaw and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2012 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychological consequences of disasters for children are often slighted in disaster management. Children are uniquely vulnerable, as they are still maturing physically, emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Mental health and psychosocial support services are typically overlooked, delayed, and/or haphazard during response and recovery efforts. All too often children and families usually have limited access to mental health treatment services once the emergency is past. Care of Children Exposed to the Traumatic Effects of Disaster is designed to provide professional and volunteer disaster responders, including community members, who routinely interact with children with the tools they need to support, intervene, and identify children who need additional help overcoming the traumatic effects of extreme events. The authors are experts in psychiatry and public health, and not only understand the psychological responses to trauma and disaster, but know what to do to mitigate them. The book is eloquently and compassionately written, and the authors succeed in both communicating their vision and teaching the practical techniques readers need to realize it. This is an indispensable book for an unpredictable world.

Book Healthy Resilient and Sustainable Communities After Disasters

Download or read book Healthy Resilient and Sustainable Communities After Disasters written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the devastation that follows a major disaster, there is a need for multiple sectors to unite and devote new resources to support the rebuilding of infrastructure, the provision of health and social services, the restoration of care delivery systems, and other critical recovery needs. In some cases, billions of dollars from public, private and charitable sources are invested to help communities recover. National rhetoric often characterizes these efforts as a "return to normal." But for many American communities, pre-disaster conditions are far from optimal. Large segments of the U.S. population suffer from preventable health problems, experience inequitable access to services, and rely on overburdened health systems. A return to pre-event conditions in such cases may be short-sighted given the high costs - both economic and social - of poor health. Instead, it is important to understand that the disaster recovery process offers a series of unique and valuable opportunities to improve on the status quo. Capitalizing on these opportunities can advance the long-term health, resilience, and sustainability of communities - thereby better preparing them for future challenges. Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters identifies and recommends recovery practices and novel programs most likely to impact overall community public health and contribute to resiliency for future incidents. This book makes the case that disaster recovery should be guided by a healthy community vision, where health considerations are integrated into all aspects of recovery planning before and after a disaster, and funding streams are leveraged in a coordinated manner and applied to health improvement priorities in order to meet human recovery needs and create healthy built and natural environments. The conceptual framework presented in Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters lays the groundwork to achieve this goal and provides operational guidance for multiple sectors involved in community planning and disaster recovery. Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters calls for actions at multiple levels to facilitate recovery strategies that optimize community health. With a shared healthy community vision, strategic planning that prioritizes health, and coordinated implementation, disaster recovery can result in a communities that are healthier, more livable places for current and future generations to grow and thrive - communities that are better prepared for future adversities.

Book excerpt: Abandonment: Brainstorming the Possible What-Ifs of Disaster Planning with Disabled People is a valuable source of condensed information for various types of organizations, families, and caregivers to utilize in becoming better prepared to fine-tune emergency response plans for assisting people with disabilities during catastrophic events. Most importantly, the book will help to prevent caregivers from leaving their jobs during disasters. The book examines how to become better prepared. The book poses questions, forcing the reader to dig deeper during the planning process— looking at scenarios ahead of time that are typically uncomfortable to examine. This will help developers build more efficient plans and therefore train caregivers more thoroughly. Disabled people have rights during disasters that need to be advocated for—caregivers need to be educated about this, and more.
