Book excerpt: A number of reports have addressed the problem of infant mortality and its associated conditions in recent years. In all of them, prenatal care has emerged as the major factor in the prevention of infant mortality and morbidity. This report goes well beyond all others by examining in detail the components of prenatal care and the timing and frequency of their delivery. This effort was initiated by the Department of Health and Human Services Low Birth Weight Prevention Work Group to provide the knowledge to ensure that prenatal care would be maximally effective in enabling a healthy pregnancy and outcome for all women in the United States.
