Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study is to describe levels of transcultural self-efficacy as self-reported by practicing nurses in two rural community hospitals in Northeastern Minnesota (N=34). This correlational, descriptive study incorporated the Transcultural Self-Efficacy Tool -- Multidisciplinary Healthcare Provider (TSET-MHP), a demographic tool, and professional care-cure practices (etics). Leininger's Culture Care Theory of Diversity and Universality was utilized for the theoretical foundation and framework of this study. The study found varying levels of self-efficacy strength (SEST) in the Cognitive and Affective domains of cultural care. The Practical (application) domain found a more moderate level of SEST. The age of participants positively affected their self-efficacy, however, educational degree was not indicative of self-efficacy. Implications for nursing practice and education are to expand educational opportunities in rural and culture-specific environments of care. Implications for nursing research include the development of larger studies that incorporate the continuums of care for rural communities, such as: larger health care systems, home care, clinics, and public health services. Exploring these levels of self-efficacy will enable improved policy development for rural care that expands nursing cultural competence and, ultimately, the same level of care for all patients.
