Book excerpt: This was a descriptive study comparing the patients' perception of the relative importance of various nurse caring behaviors with the nurses' perception of the relative importance of the same nurse caring behaviors. A sample of 50 patients undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization and 50 nurses who care for patients having cardiac catheterizations were asked to complete a Caring Behaviors Assessment. Consistent with previous studies, the patients and the nurses both identified assistance with human needs as the most important. Patients and nurses also identified the expression of positive and negative feelings as the least important of the nurse caring behaviors. However, nurses in this sample ascribed less importance to all the nurse caring behaviors than did the patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the effect of a recorded life story on nursing students' caring behaviors. A convenience sample of 49 second-semester sophomore nursing students enrolled in a pre-licensure nursing program voluntarily participated in this study. Forty-nine students were randomly divided into Thursday and Friday group. Twenty-five students listened to the recorded life story prior to giving care to the simulated patients, and 24 students did not listen to the recorded life story. Upon the completion of providing care to the simulated patients, the students received a demographic survey, and the content of the study was explained. The students were informed that they had the right to either participate or not in the survey. All 49 students completed the survey voluntarily. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the overall mean of each group's students' responses to each question. The mean score for the Thursday group was 30 (SD=7.96), and the Friday group mean score was 34.04 (SD=9.8). The Man-Whitney U Test was conducted to compare the Thursday and Friday groups. The result showed P value as 0.144, which was above alpha = 0.05; therefore, there were no significant differences in the Thursday and Friday groups. In addition, the Fisher Exact Test was conducted on all the demographic variables to determine if there were any significant associations of demographic variables and the group assignments. There were no significant differences in demographic variables.
