Book Leadership and Law Among the Eskimos of the Keewatin District Northwest Territories

Download or read book Leadership and Law Among the Eskimos of the Keewatin District Northwest Territories written by Geert van den Steenhoven and published by Rijswijk : Excelsior. This book was released on 1962 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The District of Keewatin in the Canadian Northwest Territories is an arctic tundra country and the home of two main groups of Eskimos whose societies will be the subject of the present study. On the Barren Grounds west of Hudson Bay, the Caribou Eskimos lead an inland-oriented life and, in fact, some of their groups rarely, if ever, visit the sea-shore. Their northern neighbours - whose hunting grounds stretch as far north as the Boothia Peninsula where Ross first located the Magnetic Pole in 1830 - are the Netsilik Eskimos; these now chiefly depend on the resources of the sea and their life therefore corresponds more closely to our stereotype concepts than that of the Caribou Eskimo. -- from Introductory notes.

Book excerpt: "Damas shows that while there were cases of government-directed relocation to centres, centralization was largely voluntary as the Inuit accepted the advantages of village living. In examining archives, anthropological writings, and the results of field research from an anthropological perspective, Damas provides fresh insights into the policies and developments that led to the centralization of Inuit settlement during the 1950s and 1960s."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Wildlife Production Systems

Download or read book Wildlife Production Systems written by Robert J. Hudson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, examines the controversial position of commercial utilisation in relation to wildlife conservation. Production of large mammals has earned respectability as an agricultural strategy and its evaluation has been listed as a priority requirement in the World Conservation Strategy. However, many authorities question whether wildlife production is a viable economic and environmental strategy, and suggest that it runs counter to its claimed purpose. This book evaluates this controversy by chronicling the changing role of wildlife and by reflecting on the implications of these trends. The book should be of interest to people both applauding and deploring the use of wildlife in this economic role.

Book The Boreal Ecosystem

  • Author : James A. Larsen
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-09-03
  • ISBN : 1483269876
  • Pages : 517 pages

Download or read book The Boreal Ecosystem written by James A. Larsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boreal Ecosystem presents an overview of the state of knowledge on the boreal forest region of North America, with extensive reference to the boreal regions of Europe and Asia. Initial sections of this book deal with aspects of the floristic composition and evolutionary history of the boreal vegetation. These introduce subsequent discussions on the processes at work in vegetation, soils, and the atmosphere—in short, with the boreal forest as an ecosystem, the sum total of the influences of many closely interlaced biotic and physical factors. These include not only plant species that make up the visible vegetation but also nutrients, soil, temperature, rainfall, progression of the seasons, soil microflora, arthropods, insects, and larger animals such as marten, otter, beaver, moose, caribou, bear, and wolf, and man. All are closely linked strands in the web of life, a web apart from, yet dependent on and influencing, the raw physical environment. This book should serve as an introduction and reference source to its audience: undergraduate and graduate students in the biological and ecological disciplines, research workers in these fields as well as in related areas such as soil science, agronomy, genetics, and climatology; in short, everyone with an interest in boreal ecology.

Book Caribou Inuit Traders of the Kivalliq Nunavut Canada

Download or read book Caribou Inuit Traders of the Kivalliq Nunavut Canada written by Matthew D. Walls and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1717 A.D., the Caribou Inuit of the Kivalliq, Nunavut were introduced to the Fur Trade through the Hudson Bay Company. It has been previously posited that between that time and 1900 A.D., the Caribou Inuit were drawn out of a traditional subsistence pattern and into an economy that was a part of a world system. However, the actual process of how trade goods and technologies were incorporated into Caribou Inuit society by the Caribou Inuit themselves has received little attention. Using a combination of archaeology, archival history, and oral history to examine the profiles of specific individuals, this report demonstrates the importance of Caribou Inuit families that acted as intermediaries between their culture and European trade in the process of Caribou Inuit economic transition during the early historic period.
