Book The Urban Caribbean

Download or read book The Urban Caribbean written by Alejandro Portes and published by . This book was released on 1997-06-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Urban Caribbean studies urbanization in five countries - Costa Rica, Haiti, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica - during the 1980s and 1990s, when the region's economy shifted from one heavily dependent on imports to one directed more to producing exports. This shift caused producers and entrepreneurs to rely more on microenterprises, thus challenging the informal economy networks of the central cities. Sociologist Alejandro Portes and the other contributors use rich, in-depth data to examine both qualitative and quantitative changes in these five countries. Their research method allows them to make generalizations applicable to all five economies while retaining the concreteness of the similarities and differences that make each country unique.

Book Education in Central America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Education in Central America and the Caribbean written by Colin Brock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990. The Caribbean basin is an extremely diverse area in geographical, ethnic and cultural terms. Its educational systems, too, are remarkably varied, reflecting colonial and religious traditions as well as those of a broad range of post-independence movements. Even these show a pronounced merging of the home-grown and the foreign, with the influence of the superpowers never far away. This book comprises a number of case studies ranging across the Caribbean region. The contributors focus in particular on Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, the British Virgin Islands, Mexico City, Central America, Costa Rica and Venezuela. By assembling studies from diverse cultural and political traditions and networks, the book gives a more comprehensive Caribbean perspective on education than has hitherto been available.

Book Seashells of the Caribbean

Download or read book Seashells of the Caribbean written by Lesley Sutty and published by MacMillan Education, Limited. This book was released on 1990 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of the marine shell fauna of the Caribbean is extremely diverse, seeking shelter beneath the sand of beaches, under the rocks of coastal areas, in the soft deep mud of estuaries, in dark submarine caves, in the thick growths of marine prairies, and under branches of vast coral outcrops. It remains unobtrusive and often difficult to discover. Each species has its geographical distribution and populations vary in size, shape and colour according to environment; some animals migrate seasonally far afield. Tidal movement in the Caribbean is unspectacular other than during the spring and autumn equinoxes when shallow reefs and sand flats emerge briefly. The intertidal zone remains stable and undisturbed, with the exception of the passage of tropical storms and hurricanes, governing the lives of many gastropods and bi-valves.

Book Politics and Violence in Central America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Politics and Violence in Central America and the Caribbean written by Hannes Warnecke-Berger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a comparative study on violence in Jamaica, El Salvador, and Belize based on a theoretical approach, extensive field research, and in-depth empirical research. It combines the Caribbean and Central America into a single comparative research that explores the historical (from the conquista onwards) as well as contemporary causes of violence in these societies. The volume focuses on forms of violence such as gang violence, police violence, every day forms of violence, vigilantism, and organized crime. The analysis provides a theoretical perspective that bridges political economy as well as cultural approaches in violence research. As such, it will be of interest to readers studying development, violence, political, Central American, and Caribbean studies.
