Book excerpt: The Eastern Caribbean Economic and Currency Union (OECS/ECCU) is one of four currency unions in the world. As in other parts of the world in the aftermath of the global economic and financial crisis, the region is at a crossroads, facing the major challenges of creating jobs, making growth more inclusive, reforming the banking system, and managing volatility, while grappling with high public debt and persistent low economic growth. Policymakers have the critical task of implementing strong reforms to strengthen the monetary union while also laying the foundation for accelerating growth. Download or read book Caribbean Integration Law written by David S. Berry and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean Integration Law offers a comprehensive legal analysis of the current treaties and rules governing the two main regional organisations in the Caribbean, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Both organisations are operating under new treaties, the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas and the Revised Treaty of Basseterre, respectively, which created the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, and the OECS Economic Union. The single market and economic union were built upon principles of free movement of goods, labour, and capital, and a common external tariff. This book reviews the foundations of Caribbean regional integration, the institutional frameworks of the two regional organisations, and fleshes out the scope and context of the legal systems created by the treaties. It also reviews the dispute settlement mechanisms under both treaties, including the increasingly active role of the Caribbean Court of Justice, which allows persons to enforce their treaty rights directly before the Court. The book offers selective comparisons to the current rules governing the European Union, and integrates crucial insights from the field of public international law, including the law of treaties and international institutional law.

Book Trade Agreements And Financial Services

Download or read book Trade Agreements And Financial Services written by Hazel J Johnson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-01-06 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade Agreements and Financial Services examines the cross-border agreements that have historically been focused on the trade of merchandise goods. Increasingly, emphasis is being placed on the provision of cross-border services. Notable among these are financial services. There is a clear link between economic development and the availability of financial products. Moreover, the financial services sector is, itself, a major industry that is fueling growth. The conditions under which financial services are offered in an international context are the subject of debate in the Western Hemisphere, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Book excerpt: The final text of the proposed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed by the Heads of the three member states (United States, Canada and Mexico) on December 17, 1992. After ratification by the U.S. Congress, the agreement came into force on January 1, 1994. The Glossary of NAFTA Terms elucidates and clarifies a large number of commonly used acronyms, abbreviations and terms found in the trade pact, a 2,000 page document together with side agreements on environmental and labor rules. Because of the hemispheric implications of the agreement, reference is made to all trade agreements, common markets, free trade arrangements prevailing today in the Caribbean, Central America and throughout South America. The Glossary of NAFTA Terms is an indispensable reference work for diplomats, journalists, international and national civil servants, businessmen, researchers and students that take a deep interest not only in the North American region, but indeed in the future growth of the entire Western hemisphere.
