This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Few. The Proud. The Marines. CHOOSING A CAREER IS NOT A decision to be made casually. You could spend the rest of your life pursuing the goals you choose today. You owe it to yourself to gather as much information as you can about the career choices that interest you. Reading this report will get you off to a good start. A career is more than a succession of jobs. A career should come with a paycheck, but it should also come with deep personal satisfaction and the knowledge that your efforts are leading somewhere worth going. Feeling that you are contributing to something larger than yourself is an excellent motivator. The fact that you have chosen to read a report on careers in the United States Marine Corps says very clearly that you want a career that will definitely lead you to places worth going, and that you don't mind overcoming a few challenges to get there. Whether you commit to a long-term career or just stay in the service long enough to learn valuable skills and have an adventure or two, the Marine Corps may be the place for you. The smallest of the four military services (the smaller Coast Guard is the lead agency in the Department of Homeland Security and only falls under the Department of Defense in time of war), the Marine Corps has the most enviable reputation. The reputation is so unassailable that the Marine Corps is the only service never to have trouble gaining new recruits, even in time of war. To be a US Marine is to be part of one of the world's truly elite fighting forces. This reputation is fostered in part by the catchiest recruiting slogan ever used by a military service: "The Few. The Proud. The Marines." Created in the 1960s by advertising firm J. Walter Thompson, the slogan was conceived as a way to turn the relatively small size of the Corps into an asset. The slogan has proven to be so durable that Advertising Week, the largest and most prestigious annual gathering of advertising and media industry leaders in North America named it one of the top 100 advertising slogans of all time. There is much more to the Marines than a catchy recruiting slogan, however. Much more. Trained as assault troops, Marines specialize in a form of warfare known as amphibious assault. The word "marine," means "from the sea." What Marines have traditionally done in wartime is invade hostile territory from the sea. In the military, this is known as "kicking down doors" or "grabbing a bit of beach." It is a critical part of the continuum of warfare. Today's Marine Corps counts nearly 200,000 active-duty Marines and 40,000 reservists. Although the smallest of the US armed services, the Corps is still much larger than most of the rest of the world's fighting forces. Officially part of the Department of the Navy, the Corps functions as an independent service led by a commandant who serves on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Together, the Navy-Marine Corps Team can put more power in more places than any other force in history. Think you have what it takes to be a part of it?

Book Corps Business

Download or read book Corps Business written by David H. Freedman and published by HarperBusiness. This book was released on 2000-01-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's the best-run enterprise in the world? It just may be the Marine Corps. Far from being the hidebound, autocratic entity that most people imagine, the Corps has created a stunningly nimble, almost freewheelingly adaptive organization. The result: Though often faced with extraordinarily dynamic and complex challenges, the Marines get the job done every time. Their secret? Don't think boot camp. Instead, the Marines have refined a wide-ranging system of management practices that have undergone continuous evolution under the most demanding conditions conceivable. Armed with these straightforward principles, any organization can achieve the high-impact responsiveness demanded by today's ultra-competitive, fast-changing business environments. In Corps Business, author David H. Freedman brings these principles--and their application to the business world--to light in clear, fascinating form. Freedman brings you along to observe, firsthand the high-speed Marine environment, where you'll take part in urban combat practice maneuvers, sit in on mission planning sessions, spend time on a "floating invasion party," and participate in a live-fire combat exercise. Along the way, you'll tap the wisdom of scores of Marines from three-star generals to grunts. Here are some examples: Managing by end-state--Tell people what needs to be accomplished and why, and leave the details to them. The 70-percent solution--It's better to decide quickly on an imperfect plan than to spend time considering every angle and roll out a perfect plan when it's too late. Authority on demand--While retaining a strong management pyramid, encourage people even at the lowest levels to make any and all decisions necessary to accomplish the mission when management guidance isn't at hand. Anyone facing entrenched or predatory competitors, short time frames, chaotic markets, and obstacles in every direction, has a simple choice: Learn to move fast, change on the fly, and inspire employees--or die. The Marines are here to help. With a foreword by Gen. Charles C. Krulak, Thirty-first Commandant of the United States Marine Corps.

Book Careers in the United States Army

Download or read book Careers in the United States Army written by Institute for Career Research and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOT EVERYBODY FALLS EASILY INTO A CAREER. Some careers require more soul-searching than others. Careers in the military certainly fall into this category. Military life is highly regimented and makes many demands that most other careers simply do not, like spending long periods of time away from home, moving every few years, and requiring careerists to assume great risks in the service of some very abstract ideals. The fact is, most people would not be well suited to a career in the military. What about you? Do you have what it takes to live in tents for months at a time, usually in unpleasant climates and sometimes where people you have never met are trying to kill you? Do you think you can spend all day, every day getting yelled at in basic training by superiors whose goal is to make sure you have the skills necessary to stay alive in a combat zone? Do you think you could get on a plane to the other side of the world on a few hours' notice, not knowing where you are going or when you might get back? If so, you might have what it takes to serve in the United States Army. With more than a million personnel in the active duty Army, Army Reserve and National Guard, the United States Army is by far the largest American armed service. Its soldiers are deployed across the United States and around the world 365 days a year, ready to defend the United States, its allies and interests against all enemies. The Army needs soldiers with every skill imaginable, from infantry soldiers to man the front lines, to intelligence analysts, helicopter pilots, cooks, musicians, graphic artists, linguists, scientists and many others. In fact, for every soldier posted at the front lines there are 11 soldiers in the rear, supporting their colleagues at the front.

Book The United States Marine Corps

Download or read book The United States Marine Corps written by Paul Westermeyer and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise overview of USMC history from an award-winning author, including photos and a timeline: “Educational and enjoyable.” —Booklist Many think of the United States Marine Corps as a second land army, and while it has been employed in that capacity, it is foremost a naval expeditionary force able to seize, secure, and defend advanced naval bases in support of major campaigns. The Corps dates back to the Revolutionary War, but while they served in the conflicts of the nineteenth century, they are famed for their part in the wars of the twentieth century. On the Western Front in World War I they were blooded at Belleau Wood. Between the wars the Corps developed amphibious tactics that were employed to great effect during the Pacific island campaigns during World War II, including the infamous battles of Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The name of the Corps is forever entwined with the battles of Inchon and Chosin Reservoir in Korea, and Hue and Khe Sanh in Vietnam. The US Marines have continued their expeditionary role to this day, undertaking not only combat operations but also peacekeeping, peace enforcement, humanitarian relief, and short-notification/limited-duration contingency operations. This short history charts the evolution of the Corps as it has adapted to changing combat over two centuries.
