Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IF AN UNCONVENTIONAL LIFE APPEALS to you, keep reading. Merchant mariners - the collective name for captains, mates and pilots of water vessels - spend much of their careers at sea, on lakes or rivers moving the people and goods that make the global economy go. That's a far cry from a daily commute to an office cubicle. You may not know much about the maritime industry or the careers it offers. You imagine huge seaports in distant lands. The truth is about 95 percent of all international trade moves by sea. Ninety-five percent of everything around you that wasn't made in the continental United States (or Canada and Mexico, both of which ship most goods to the U.S. on trucks or trains) got to American shores on a ship. To say that the maritime industry is critical to the functioning of a modern economy would be a gross understatement. You could be a part of this very important industry. This new Careers Ebook contains a wealth of unbiased information about an occupational field, based on the latest national surveys. Careers Ebooks cover attractive and unattractive sides, opportunities, education necessary, personal qualifications required, earnings, descriptions of different job specialties, first person accounts by those in the field, and how to get started; including practical advice on what to do now. There are live links to schools and colleges, associations, periodicals and other sources of reliable information.

Book Maritime Professions

Download or read book Maritime Professions written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a global scale, more than 40 million people make their living working directly at sea as fishers, seafarers, in aquaculture or seabed-mining, or related occupations such as dockworkers, shipbuilding, logistics, maritime administration, secondary branches of shipping, marine tourism and other maritime professions. The study of maritime labour and occupations is still under-represented in the social sciences and humanities. With the present volume, we attempt to fill this gap by representing recent research on maritime professions from a sociological perspective drawing on a wide variety of disciplinary approaches and subject matters.

Book The Transformation of Maritime Professions

Download or read book The Transformation of Maritime Professions written by Karel Davids and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the economic impact of technological changes and the rise of passenger shipping on social relations on board and ashore in European shipping industries between c.1850 and 2000. The changes in motive power, communication techniques and positioning technologies and the rise of passenger shipping went together with the creation of new tasks and functions and the marginalization or disappearance of traditional jobs and skills. This book presents case-studies on changes in different maritime professions between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the twentieth century, covering the shipping industries of a variety of seafaring countries in Europe. The subjects include changes in maritime labour at large, changes in specific groups of deck, catering or engine room personnel, such as captains, cooks, catering personnel, engineers, or radio-operators. A number of chapters employ a prosopographical or micro-historical approach, while others apply a spatial perspective, analyze business records, materials from professional associations or distil information from large sets of quantitative data. This book will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, maritime and labour history.

Book Seafarers Rights in the Globalized Maritime Industry

Download or read book Seafarers Rights in the Globalized Maritime Industry written by Desislava Nikolaeva Dimitrova and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormous technological, financial, and structural changes of recent decades have revolutionized the international shipping industry, bringing about lower freight rates, shorter time in port and fast turnarounds, reduction in crew size, employment of cheap labour from developing countries, avoidance of national regulations and taxes, and diminished living and working standards on board. Exploitation of seafarers has always existed, but now it has become more common and frequent. Shipowners can cut costs in various ways, but the most profitable and easiest to achieve are those at the expense of labour costs, in particular costs for maintaining proper living conditions on board the ship. This bulletin examines in detail the structure of the shipping industry, focusing on problems concerning the working and living conditions of seafarers on board merchant ships serving the global sea transport system. Exploring all levels of maritime policymaking on a global and European level, the author analyses seafarers' rights in the light of international enforcement mechanisms and particularly in the light of the recent ILO Maritime Labour Convention. He also considers relevant case law, as well as advisory opinions and policy statements from various pertinent agencies, especially in the EU context.. Among the issues raised and discussed in depth in relation to their effect on seafarers' labour standards are the following: * ship manning companies; * illicit crewing agencies; * flags of convenience; * hours of work and rest; * wages; * occupational health and safety; * accommodation, food, water, and catering; * recreational facilities; * filing of grievance; and * port controls. The author shows that, expansion and progress of the maritime industry notwithstanding, there is a great need for effective enforcement mechanisms in this area. This is the first detailed analysis to connect the working and living conditions of seafarers with international, supranational, and national maritime legislation. A giant step towards establishing a global monitoring system to enforce international maritime conventions regarding seafarers' labour standards, it is sure to make an important contribution to both international labour and employment law and the law of the sea.
