Download or read book Career As an Engineer written by Institute For Institute For Career Research and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THROUGHOUT HUMAN HISTORY, CIVILIZATIONS have been built with the best materials available at the time. It started with a handful of natural substances - rocks, mud, wood, skins, and straw. Today, there is a vast range of materials available, from vulcanized rubber for our shoes to ceramic composites in military aircraft. Where do our modern materials come from? Some still come from the earth in the form of ores that are extracted, refined, and used to fabricate all kinds of products. The rest arise from the imagination of materials engineers. Materials engineers are on the cutting edge of technology in virtually every field. They develop materials with precise combinations of mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties that make other advances possible. Metals, plastics, ceramics, nanomaterials, and semi-conductors are just a few materials that these professionals continue to develop and enhance. Materials engineers are often the unsung heroes that make life better for countless millions of people. Here are some examples of what materials engineers have accomplished: Invented clothing that repels mosquitoes Created more flexible materials to enhance the maneuverability of skis and snowboards Developed nanosized polymers that help repair shattered bones Developed artificial skin grafts that help burn victims heal faster Created stretchable material for clothing that returns to its original shape In addition to developing new types of materials, materials engineers look for new ways to use existing materials. In the manufacturing environment, they are often tasked with selecting the most appropriate materials to produce particular items, whether that is computer chips or golf clubs. In the mining industry, they work on more efficient and eco-friendly ways of extracting minerals and processing them. Many materials engineers are also involved in research, studying the properties and structures of substances in order to create needed materials that do not yet exist, or to determine the cause of material failure. Materials engineers work in a variety of environments. Those focused on research and development work in university research laboratories or industry development labs. Those associated with manufacturing may work in factories or offices where they have access to advanced computers and design equipment. Some materials engineers spend much of their time out of doors at mining operations that may be quite remote. While the environment and hours that they work can vary substantially with their industry and job, most materials engineers work regular hours.

Book excerpt: For the longest time, parents and children both, knew and believed that Medicine, Engineering, Management and Law were the only true 'careers' which could provide job security and steady paycheques. However, youngsters today couldn't have been more open to trying out offbeat careers. They are bold, patient, resilient and aware of the fact that a career that is in line with their interests has a higher chance of being satisfying. An equal, or probably more, parents are sceptical about these unconventional careers and would rather have their children go in for 'tried and tested' jobs. With 'Steps to Career', the author has attempted to dilute the dilemma of such children and their parents, providing them a wealth of information on the available conventional and unconventional career options, to help the children decide the right career for them, and the process.

Book Steel Metallurgy for the Non Metallurgist

Download or read book Steel Metallurgy for the Non Metallurgist written by John D. Verhoeven and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the metallurgy of steel and its heat treatment for non-metallurgists. It starts from simple concepts--beginning at the level of high-school chemistry classes--and building to more complex concepts involved in heat treatment of most all types of steel as well as cast iron. It was inspired by the author when working with practicing bladesmiths for more than 15 years. Most chapters in the book contain a summary at the end. These summaries provide a short review of the contents of each chapter. This book is THE practical primer on steel metallurgy for those who heat, forge, or machine steel.

Book Extractive Metallurgy 2

Download or read book Extractive Metallurgy 2 written by Alain Vignes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extractive metallurgy is the art and science of extracting metals from their ores and refining them. The production of metals and alloys from these source materials is still one of the most important and fundamental industries in both developed and developing economies around the world. The outputs and products are essential resources for the metallic, mechanical, electromagnetic, electrical and electronics industries (silicon is treated as a metal for these purposes). This series is devoted to the extraction of metals from ores, concentrates (enriched ores), scraps, and other sources and their refining to the state of either liquid metal before casting or to solid metals. The extraction and refining operations that are required may be carried out by various metallurgical reaction processes. Extractive Metallurgy 1 deals with the fundamentals of thermodynamics and kinetics of the reaction processes. Extractive Metallurgy 2 focuses on pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, halide and electro-metallurgical (conversion) processes. Extractive Metallurgy 3 deals with the industrial processing operations, technologies, and process routes, in other words the sequence of steps or operations used to convert the ore to metal. Processes and operations are studied using the methodology of "chemical reaction engineering". As the fundamentals of the art and science of Extractive Metallurgy are infrequently taught as dedicated university or engineering schools courses, this series is intended both for students in the fields of Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering who want to acquire this knowledge, and also for engineers put in charge of the operation of an industrial production unit or the development of a new process, who will need the basic knowledge of the corresponding technology.
