Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the career maturity, achievement motiva tion, and self-esteem of college women living in two Middle Eastern Islamic cult ures. Saudi Arabia is a traditional, conservative culture; whereas Lebanon is ge nerally perceived to be much more liberal and westernized. The Saudi sample was comprised of 116 women who were enrolled in various programs at King Saud Univer sity in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Lebanese sample consisted of 102 females who p ursued their studies at the American University of Beirut and Beirut University College. The students were asked to complete the following instruments: Super's Career Development Inventory (CDI) (1981), Lindgren's NachNaff Scale (1976), and Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale (1965), and a background questionnaire. These mea sures were translated into Arabic and the CDI was adapted to take into account p ractices of career development in the Middle East. The results indicated that Le banese college females have a higher level of career maturity than their Saudi c ounterparts as a result of greater opportunities for career exploration and more educational options. The socialization practices of a Saudi society seems to ha ve produced in women confusion about their self-perceptions and their societal r oles. The expected differences on the variables of achievement motivation and se lf-esteem were not found. This may be due to the possibility that the scales act ually measure different experiences of success and self-worth for women in each culture. The findings may also have been influenced by common Arab cultural expe riences, namely the anchoring of self-esteem in family relationships, various ch ild rearing practices, and certain cultural prohibitions against presenting ones elf in a negative light. Various recommendations are suggested as a means of hel ping Arab women cope with the inevitable changes that will take place in the yea rs ahead: Increase the occupational and educational options for women, increase the availability of counseling and public awareness campaigns for men and women about the importance of career development and national achievement. It was also recommended that both countries establish career development institutes for res earch and development to find ways to integrate women into the work force.
