Book Career Development Among Women Academicians

Download or read book Career Development Among Women Academicians written by Amina Hassan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women are still underrepresented in higher education in Uganda. Few women continue their studies to establish their career as academicians and occupy senior academic positions in Ugandan universities. Therefore the purpose of the study was to understand the contributing factors towards career development of Ugandan women academicians in universities in Uganda. The study contributed to the literature on the experience of women academics in sub Saharan Africa, Uganda in particular. Specifically, it provided the contributing factors towards the career development of Ugandan women academics. The findings are a guide to women who have the will to build their career to high academia, and higher education in general. Qualitative method of study was used. Purposive sampling method was used to select 14 participants for the study. The researcher used in-depth interviews, open ended questionnaire, and researcher's diary as strategies for collecting data. Constant comparative method was used to analyze data. The findings revealed that the informants have a positive attitude towards their teaching career. The contributing factors towards career development of Uganda women academics include: personal factors; such as high career aspirations, interest, values, large networking base, and community service. The environmental factors include: the support by important people which comes from parents, teachers, mentors and spouses. The conducive institutional environment includes good schools, good work environment, sabbatical, and gender equity. Financial support which comes in the form of scholarships and research funds. The women have developed their career amidst challenges; balancing between home and career roles, negative society attitude, institutional politics, and limits in networking. For the women to overcome these challenges they have shown some coping strategies such as time management, proper planning, quality academic work, and family support. In conclusion, the findings support the belief that personal and environmental factors influence career development. Therefore women should be dynamic and institutions should provide conducive environment for women to develop their career.

Book Voice and Agency

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

Book Safe Water Sanitation and Early Childhood Malnutrition in East Africa

Download or read book Safe Water Sanitation and Early Childhood Malnutrition in East Africa written by Assata Zerai and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand safe water and sanitation in East Africa, it is important to consider the contributions of African feminist analysis. This perspective will unveil inequities in the distribution of resources, demonstrate how localized solutions which are driven by women’s collaborative work have had an impact by temporarily easing the burden, and paint a multilayered picture of the lives of women and girls who are the predominant providers of water to households. This book explores the effects of water and sanitation quality and availability on early childhood morbidity in East Africa from an African feminist sociological perspective. It presents a framework that considers the ways that the development industry, neoliberalism, neocolonial relations, gender, class, ethnicity, globalization, and other dimensions of oppression intersect to impact upon the experiences and agency of women and children accessing clean water and safe sanitation and reducing early childhood morbidity in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. This work offers a vital contribution to the social scientific literature by adapting the vibrant intellectual work of African feminists to a quantitative methodology and enlarging the scope of empirically and theoretically grounded studies within the field of environmental sociology.

Book Human Rights in Education Science and Culture Legal Developments and Challenges

Download or read book Human Rights in Education Science and Culture Legal Developments and Challenges written by Yvonne Donders and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights are at the heart of UNESCO's work in the fields of education, science and culture. Conceived from an international human rights legal framework, Human Rights in Education, Science and Culture: Legal Developments and Challenges combines insights into the content, scope of application and corresponding state obligations of these rights with analyses of issues relating to their implementation. The volume begins by presenting the principles of the indivisibility, interrelatedness and interdependence of all human rights. It then turns to questions related to economic, social and cultural rights, including their justiciability, their application between private parties and the development of indicators for measuring their implementation. Finally, it addresses the right to education, the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications, and the right to take part in cultural life - the content and scope of application of the latter two rights being especially in need of further elucidation. Dedicated to the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this volume will be an invaluable resource for all those working in the area of human rights.
