Book excerpt: Institutional care for seniors offers a cultural repository for fears and hopes about an aging population. Although enormous changes have occurred in how institutional care is structured, the legacies of the poorhouse still persist, creating panicked views of the nursing home as a dreaded fate. The paradoxical nature of a space meant to be both hospital and home offers up critical tensions for examination by age studies scholars. The essays in this book challenge stereotypes of institutional care for older adults, illustrate the changes that have occurred over time, and illuminate the continuities in the stories we tell about nursing homes.

Book Dementia Home Care

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The target audience is women between the ages of 42 and 65. They represent the majority of unpaid care givers for loved ones with dementia. Dementia Home Care: How to Prepare Before, During and After will examine taking on the role of care giver and help them make informed decisions about in-home care giving. It will give examples of how to create a safe living space, how to use distraction techniques, and suggest available resources for the care giver. It will emphasize the role of care giver respite and participating in dementia community support to relieve the daily stress of dementia care. Home care giver, Tracy Cram Perkins, will use anecdotes drawn from twelve years of experience. Demetia Home Care will cover aggressive behavior, coping strategies, memory aids, communication aids, and support services. There is a space at the end of each chapter for the reader to record special or humorous moments with their loved ones. And it will address the empty nester experience after the loss of a loved one—to a nursing facility or to death—rarely covered in other books of this genre. This life-lesson of care giving is not meant to destroy us but meant to remind us to take care of ourselves, forgive ourselves, accept ourselves. To know other people trudge up this same hill with us every day. To pay forward kindness in some measure. To know laughter has not abandoned us. At the end, to know some measure of joy. -- Tracy Cram Perkins

Book Aging Is Living

Download or read book Aging Is Living written by Irene Borins Ash and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the inspirational, wise, and informative stories of the residents, either in their own words or based on interviews, and environmental photographs of each, this book focuses on various residents of long-term care facilities and especially on the positive facets of their life, their thoughts, and their feelings. The only issue that reaches the media about nursing homes is the negative and unfortunate events that sometimes occur, but there is so much more to the story. Most people are afraid of long-term care homes because they recognize that it is the last phase in their life - it is the step before death. But some people have years from the time they enter the home until they die. This book shows how many men and women make the best of their situation - often leaving a positive legacy for family and friends - and how these can be fulfilling and quality years.

Download or read book Love and Loss written by Carolyn Bailey Lewis (Ph.D.) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although it is the unthinkable, all people think about it at some point or have it in the back of their minds. Whatever your thoughts about skilled nursing homes are, the images are not always pleasant. Whether you are aging yourself, have aging parents, or have a disability, who will provide for you? Is skilled nursing the answer and what will it cost? Are you “putting family away” or taking care upon yourself as families in many cultures do? Carefully choosing options, knowing what those selections mean, and demystifying the process is the central theme of Love and Loss: The Storied Nature of Nursing Home Care. In it stories are told by those who have received care, by family members, by care providers, and by the author from personal, inside experience as a resident in six skilled nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities over 26 years. The author amplifies crucial services and activities for which to look and offers nursing home and rehabilitation recommendations from improving services to volunteering and advocacy. This work sheds light, from an insider’s point of view, on the state of care, nursing home laws, the mystery of care, how others have navigated the murky waters, what they loved, and what they lost." -- Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Problem Our current healthcare system is increasingly incompatible with the needs of our population, particularly with regard to chronic illness and long-term care (LTC). Despite widespread dissatisfaction, major reforms are not in sight. Why is this the case? The reluctance to confront the realities goes beyond simple denial - it is not even considered a topic worthy of discussion. The central symbol of LTC is the Nursing Home, the unfortunate marriage of the hospital and homeless shelter. The mistaken stereotype is nursing homes are smelly, unattractive and filled with frail, weird and half-dead people. Current attitudes reflect the belief that nothing can be done and the clinical situation is hopeless. As a society, we will not invest in LTC until we believe it is worth it. The Challenge and the Key to a Solution The basic challenge is to humanize the people in LTC and show they benefit from care. Until LTC has a better image few will advocate for more innovation and the image is unlikely to change. The paradox is that care is nursing homes is generally high quality in spite of a fragmented, understaffed, dysfunctional health care system. Long-term care is a necessary aspect of life for many individuals, yet it is a relatively unexplored topic in storytelling. Through this book, I aim to challenge societal myths, stereotypes and misconceptions about long-term care and the value of elderly and disabled individuals who live there. I hope to offer insights and understanding into the world of long-term care. The stories in this book reflect the intimate and personal nature of nursing home care, as well as the unique dilemmas and social boundaries that are encountered in this field. They showcase the spectrum of human life that LTC encompasses, with patients from all walks of life and a wide range of experiences, emotions, and challenges. I have learned many valuable life lessons from the people and through the experiences I have encountered in nursing home care. My goal is to share these lessons with readers through this book. The stories in this book also highlight the importance of compassion, empathy, and understanding in the care of elderly and disabled individuals. They emphasize the positive impact that simple, compassionate interventions can have on personal well-being. I believe that stories have the power to serve as messengers of deep teaching. Each story offers a valuable lesson or insight. Whether you are a healthcare professional, a family member of someone in long-term care, or simply interested in learning more about the world of long-term care, this book has something useful to offer.

Book A Home Is Not Always Where The Heart Is

Download or read book A Home Is Not Always Where The Heart Is written by Denise Martinson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-01-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every time someone mentions nursing homes or related stories about the aged residing in them, a sense of pity or horrible thoughts are conjured up in our minds that they are depressing and smell of urine, and seem dark and unwelcoming. So many people today do not visit them. Instead of being a joyful experience, it becomes a nightmare-if only in the mind of the visitors because nursing homes are exploited in the media-that all seniors in a Home are abused and neglected, which is not true. There are quality facilities out there, and we should feel good, instead, about the care now available for a relative with Dementia, or those unable to care for themselves. The truth is we are the ones who refuse to feel, or try to understand what residents, aides, and those involved with the care of the elderly experience. A Home Is Not Always Where The Heart Is is not a serious look at the aged, nor a journal filled with information on why a person develops Alzheimer's disease. Rather it is an honest look-through humor and the day-to-day living of the aged in a home.

Book With Faces to the Evening Sun

Download or read book With Faces to the Evening Sun written by Richard L. Morgan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a book of mature wisdom--straightforward, lucid, inspiring. Richard Morgan has grasped two essential realities: that people live as well as die in nursing homes and that God meets people here with unyielding love." --Henry C. Simmons, former Director of Center on Aging, Union Presbyterian Seminary "Dick Morgan has creatively and insightfully reflected the struggles of aging as lived in the never failing presence of God. The reader is provided an image of the human spirit strengthened by God to give life perspective and purpose, even when the body becomes more frail. The Scripture readings, devotions, and prayers will resonate with each caregiver, care receiver, and family member as they face together the adventures and challenges of a rich new phase of life." --W. Ray Inscoe, Director of Pastoral Care, Westminster Canterbury, Richmond, VA "As a chaplain in a long care facility, I often discover that residents are without devotional reading to nourish their faith. This work will be a source of inspiration and comfort to older people who are struggling with what meaning their life has in a nursing home, when 'someone else takes [them] where they do not want to go.' It makes them aware that God still has a plan for their lives." --Philip Jamison, Chaplain, Redstone Highlands, North Huntingdon, PA

  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Creative Teamwork written by Pat Armstrong and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative Team Work describes a new way of doing rapid ethnography to capture the rich complexity and contradictions of social relations. It is about the imagination, stimulation, and reflection that can come with international, interdisciplinary teams sharing the development, application, analysis, and dissemination of research. Although the book is based on a large, seven-year project studying care homes to search for promising practices and is guided by feminist political economy, the lessons we have learned are relevant for everyone undertaking empirical investigation. All research needs to consider theory -- the organization of information, ethics, and dissemination, for example. The specific techniques and approaches the authors discuss can be applied to a wide range of qualitative methods and are not exclusive to this kind of ethnography. By dissecting experiences and uniting chapters through the theme of creative, reflexive team work, the book considers issues and methods of interest to all those struggling through the research process, with or without team support.
