Book excerpt: Eminent moral philosopher Michael Slote argues that care ethics presents an important challenge to other ethical traditions and that a philosophically developed care ethics should, and can, offer its own comprehensive view of the whole of morality. Taking inspiration from British moral sentimentalism and drawing on recent psychological literature on empathy, he shows that the use of that notion allows care ethics to develop its own sentimentalist account of respect, autonomy, social justice, and deontology. Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to understand the motivations and influences that drive male and female students' participation in experiences that research demonstrates to have a positive impact on students' moral reasoning development while in college. Moral reasoning is an important aspect of student development that contextualizes how students make decisions and view themselves as part of a larger whole. Research has demonstrated that several factors may positively impact one's moral reasoning development while in college, including certain academic, cultural and social experiences. However, existing literature suggests that gender may be a factor in moral reasoning development, often suggesting that college women achieve higher levels of moral reasoning while in college. Through semi-structured interviews of male and female college juniors and seniors, this study explores the motivations and influences that impact participation choices while in college. The findings suggest both similarities and differences across gender, which may shed light on possible gender differences in moral reasoning outcomes in college. Better understanding the role that gender plays in student choices could inform college administrators around issues that impact student participation and, therefore, meaningful development while in college.

However, the MJI dilemmas have been criticized as artificial and may not be entirely appropriate for children, certain cultures, and practical moral situations. This unique volume utilizes and evaluates a new production measure of moral judgment, the Sociomoral Reflection Measure -- Short Form (SRM-SF), which substitutes brief stimulus materials and evaluative questions for the moral dilemma technique. The authors report that the SRM-SF exhibits an impressive degree of reliability and validity and is quicker to administer and score than other available measures. To illustrate these findings, this book offers the resources needed for the assessment of the Kohlbergian stage of moral judgment using the SRM-SF. The problem of the relationship between judgment and action is receiving much attention and reformulation as well. The role of affect in moral functioning has been sorely overlooked until very recently. A further issue is the implication of the particular realm of one's life (family, school, peer group, workplace, church) for the form and effectiveness of moral education. Finally, how can self-acknowledged moral transgressions in typical individuals be incorporated into the theory? This volume reflects these problems.
