The Care Act 2014 introduced new safeguarding duties for local authorities, and this book describes what up-to-date practice should look like, and how to provide the best quality care and support for adults who may be at risk of abuse or neglect. Chapters cover core areas of practice according to Care Act and adult safeguarding principles, identify the fundamental skills and knowledge practitioners working in this area should be able to utilise and introduce the emerging challenging issues in the workplace. As well as being invaluable to practitioners working directly in this field, this is also ideally suited to be a text for any social work course or programme on adult safeguarding practice.

Download or read book Making sense of theory and its application to social work practice written by Phil Musson and published by Critical Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you struggle to get your head around the application of theory and associated methods of intervention to social work practice? Making sense of theory and its application to social work practice is here to help you with a fresh approach written with the ‘non- theoretician’ in mind. After exploring the expectations and limits of application of theory to practice, Phil Musson sets about describing theories of explanation and their associated methods of intervention in an accessible way. He follows this by looking at theoretically driven approaches and their associated methods of intervention. One generic case study is used throughout, tweaked slightly but maintaining the same service users and issues so you can see how the theory of explanation or approach and the associated method of intervention is applied. You are also able to sharpen up your critical thinking skills as the author invites you to reflect on the theories of explanation and approaches discussed. Making Sense of Theory and its Application to Social Work Practice will be immensely valuable to both social work students and practitioners.
Download or read book Managing Challenging Behaviour Following Acquired Brain Injury written by Nick Alderman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This empirically based book provides conceptual knowledge and practical advice to enable clinicians to implement evidence-based methods drawn from learning theory for managing the catastrophic effects of challenging behaviour as an enduring outcome of acquired brain injury (ABI). Based on a conceptual framework of neurobehavioural disability, the book takes a holistic case formulation approach, incorporating functional assessment procedures arising from the operant learning tradition that underpins the design of treatment interventions. It bridges the knowledge gap in uniquely providing a single resource to enable practitioners to implement evidence-based methods to better manage ABI behaviour disorders. The authors, who are leading experts in the field, have described a model of intervention based on a functional analytic approach to understanding behaviour within an operant learning framework. The chapters provide a step-by-step approach to assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation of behaviour support plans, and feature examples for specific challenging behaviours in a variety of different contexts. The book is organised to support the use of this model through expert contributions concerning the origins of challenging behaviour, assessment methods and formulation, and interventions. The practical orientation of this book makes it an indispensable read for neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists and other rehabilitation specialists involved in the care of people with ABI as well as researchers in these fields.

Download or read book Contesting Elder Abuse and Neglect written by Joan R. Harbison and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mistreatment of older people is categorized in many societies as “elder abuse and neglect,” yet the concept has not been subjected to rigorous critical inquiry. Instead, it has most often represented the interests of professionals, academics, and governments, while policy makers and researchers frequently overlook or disregard the complexity of issues that fall under this designation. Contesting Elder Abuse and Neglect questions existing understandings about the mistreatment of older people. It explores how and why the designation “elder abuse and neglect” came to be and shows how this term masks problems concerning the mistreatment of older people, their place in society, and how they see themselves. Joan R. Harbison and her colleagues expose how supposed solutions to the problem of abuse can take their toll on those people they were originally intended to protect. The book is an important contribution to the literature that encourages new thinking about issues concerning the mistreatment of older people.
