Book Catholics in the Movies

Download or read book Catholics in the Movies written by Colleen McDannell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-24 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholicism was all over movie screens in 2004. Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was at the center of a media firestorm for months. A priest was a crucial character in the Academy Award-winning Million Dollar Baby. Everyone, it seemed, was talking about how religious stories should be represented, marketed, and received. Catholic characters, spaces, and rituals have been stock features in popular films since the silent era. An intensely visual religion with a well-defined ritual and authority system, Catholicism lends itself to the drama and pageantry of film. Moviegoers watch as Catholic visionaries interact with the supernatural, priests counsel their flocks, reformers fight for social justice, and bishops wield authoritarian power. Rather than being marginal to American popular culture, Catholic people, places, and rituals are all central to the world of the movie. Catholics in the Movies begins with an introductory essay that orients readers to the ways that films appear in culture and describes the broad trends that can be seen in the movies' hundred-year history of representing Catholics. Each chapter is written by a noted scholar of American religion who concentrates on one movie engaging important historical, artistic, and religious issues. Each then places the film within American cultural and social history, discusses the film as an expression of Catholic concerns of the period, and relates the film to others of its genre. Tracing the story of American Catholic history through popular films, Catholics in the Movies should be a valuable resource for anyone interested in American Catholicism and religion and film.

Book Catholicism Opening to the World and Other Confessions

Download or read book Catholicism Opening to the World and Other Confessions written by Vladimir Latinovic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how Catholicism began and continues to open its doors to the wider world and to other confessions in embracing ecumenism, thanks to the vision and legacy of the Second Vatican Council. It explores such themes as the twentieth century context preceding the council; parallels between Vatican II and previous councils; its distinctively pastoral character; the legacy of the council in relation to issues such as church-world dynamics, as well as to ethics, social justice, economic activity. Several chapters discuss the role of women in the church before, during, and since the council. Others discern inculturation in relation to Vatican II. The book also contains a wide and original range of ecumenical considerations of the council, including by and in relation to Free Church, Reformed, Orthodox, and Anglican perspectives. Finally, it considers the Council’s ongoing promise and remaining challenges with regard to ecumenical issues, including a groundbreaking essay on the future of ecumenical dialogue by Cardinal Walter Kasper.

Book American Catholicism Transformed

Download or read book American Catholicism Transformed written by Joseph P. Chinnici and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situating the church within the context of post-World War II globalization and the Cold War, American Catholicism Transformed draws on previously untapped archival sources to provide deep background to developments within the American Catholic Church in relationship to American society at large. Shaped by anti-communist sentiment and responsive to American cultural trends, the Catholic community adopted "strategies of domestic containment," stressing the close unity between the Church and the "American way of life." A focus on the unchanging character of God's law as expressed in social hierarchies of authority, race, and gender provided a public visage of unity and uniformity. However, the emphasis on American values mainstreamed into the community the political values of personal rights, equality, acceptance of the arms race, and muted the Church's inherited social vision. The result was a deep ambivalence over the forces of secularization. The Catholic community entered a transitional stage in which "those on the right" and "those on the left" battled for control of the Church's vision. International networking, reform of religious life among women, international congresses of the laity, the institutionalization of the liturgical movement, and the burgeoning civil right movement positioned the community to receive the Vatican Council in a distinctly American way. During the Second Vatican Council, the American bishops and theological experts gradually adopted the reforming currents of the world-wide Church. This convergence of international and national forces of renewal -- and resistance to them -- says Joseph Chinnici, will continue to shape the American Catholic community's identity in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty (1892 1975) was in 1956 71 "guest" of the American Embassy in Budapest, Hungary. During these 15 years he wrote a great number of letters and messages transmitted through diplomatic channels to four US Presidents and their Secretaries of State. There are only two Presidential answers: from Kennedy and from Nixon. In general, the Department of State instructed the Chargé in Budapest to inform the Cardinal orally: his message has been received in the White House/State Department. This correspondence in his integrity remained buried in 5 archives. This book is offered for all those willing to learn the various problems of Cold War and detente periode, American diplomacy and the thinking of the great cardinal, in his generation hero of freedom for the Hungarians and for the World. * From the letters of the Cardinal: The Treaty of Versailles-"Trianon has dismembered us, and Yalta has created a Soviet satellite out of us." (October 23, 1957) "The moral qualifications leave the sinful-livers and blood-wallowers cold." (November 8, 1957) "Today nothing is more important (and perhaps it is not too late) for mankind, than that its leaders and the led should learn what bolshevism is in the way that we its poor, wretched satellites have experienced in body and soul. This great lesson can equal the Declaration of Independence in its effect." (June 23, 1960) "This peace [i.e., the peace of Central Europe] has been the peace of the graveyard; only those who are not imprisoned can be satisfied with a jail." (August 10, 1961) " illegality never can become legality, as the injustice justice." (March 13, 1964) * Rev.
