Book excerpt: Digital technology is fundamentally altering the world we live in, but can only be truly understood in relation to the physical world we all inhabit. The most successful future products and policies will be those that take this rich digital/physical ecology seriously. The physical world is increasingly filled with digital products to the extent that the boundaries of digital and physical reality become blurred. From mundane devices such as mobile phones and washing machines, to esoteric research including tangible computation and body implants, we continually bridge two worlds literally touching buttons and dials and simultaneously interacting with the digital systems that lie behind them. The connection between pure thought and abstract information is through solid keyboard and mouse; but likewise the material world of buildings, cars and running shoes is suffused with computation through sensors, displays and flashing LEDs. How do people understand this world and how can designers create usable hybrid physical-digital products? TouchIT brings together insights from human-computer interaction and industrial design, exploring these themes under four main headings: human body and mind; objects and things; space; and information and computation. In considering each, the authors look into the underlying physical processes, our human understanding of them, and then the way these inform and are informed by digital design. The end draws together the theoretical and practical implications of this for design, including practical advice, potential tools, and philosophical underpinnings.

Book The Great Disruption

Download or read book The Great Disruption written by Rick Smith and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Disruption reveals how 3D printing manufacturing will transform the world in the same way that Henry Ford’s Model T upended transportation or Gutenberg’s printing press started an information revolution. It traces both the impact of this disruption as it rapidly spreads around the world and affects every kind of industry imaginable, while detailing specific steps that can and should be taken right now to prepare. The 3D manufacturing revolution is pervasive and growing rapidly, and includes such major breakthroughs as: - A machine in Amsterdam that can 3D print a bridge over a canal underneath it using no support or scaffolding - A global auto manufacturer designing a car that automatically changes its physical shape and structure in response to current driving conditions - A scientist in London experimenting with 3D printing material that is two hundred times stronger than steel - A Harvard researcher who is 3D printing batteries the size of a single grain of sand - An astronaut who is printing replacement parts in space—and a shipping executive who is doing the same thing on cargo ships In exploring this radical future, The Great Disruption shows how we can position ourselves to successfully navigate this historic shift to our greatest benefit.

Book Britain s Industrial Revolution in 100 Objects

Download or read book Britain s Industrial Revolution in 100 Objects written by John Broom and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of Britain’s Industrial Revolution was perhaps the most transformative era in the nation’s history. Between about 1750 and 1914, life and work, home and school, church and community changed irreversibly for Britain’s rapidly expanding population. Lives were transformed, some for the better, but many endured abysmal domestic and workplace conditions. Eventually improvements were made to Britain’s social fabric which led to the prospect of richer and more fulfilled lives for working men, women and even children. Focusing on 100 objects that either directly influenced, or arose from, these changes, John Broom offers a distinctive insight into this fascinating age. With plentiful illustrations and suggestions for visits to hundreds of places of historical interest, this book makes an ideal companion for a journey into Britain’s industrial past.

Book Time and the Digital

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy Scott Barker
  • Publisher : UPNE
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 1611683009
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Time and the Digital written by Timothy Scott Barker and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2012 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eschewing the traditional focus on object/viewer spatial relationships, Timothy Scott Barker's Time and the Digital stresses the role of the temporal in digital art and media. The connectivity of contemporary digital interfaces has not only expanded the relationships between once separate spaces but has increased the complexity of the temporal in nearly unimagined ways. Barker puts forward the notion that the new ways we interact with digital media, including ever-expanding digital networks and databases that house vast amounts of data, actually produce a new type of time. Invoking the process philosophy of Whitehead and Deleuze, and taking examples from the history of media art as well as our daily interaction with digital technology, he strives for nothing less than a new philosophy of time in digital encounters, aesthetics, and interactivity. Of interest to scholars in the fields of art and media theory and philosophy of technology, as well as new media artists, this study contributes to an understanding of the new temporal experiences emergent in our interactions with digital technologies.

  • Author : Geoff McNamara
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-04-24
  • ISBN : 038776562X
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Clocks in the Sky written by Geoff McNamara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsars are rapidly spinning neutron stars, the collapsed cores of once massive stars that ended their lives as supernova explosions. In this book, Geoff McNamara explores the history, subsequent discovery and contemporary research into pulsar astronomy. The story of pulsars is brought right up to date with the announcement in 2006 of a new breed of pulsar, Rotating Radio Transients (RRATs), which emit short bursts of radio signals separated by long pauses. These may outnumber conventional radio pulsars by a ratio of four to one. Geoff McNamara ends by pointing out that, despite the enormous success of pulsar research in the second half of the twentieth century, the real discoveries are yet to be made including, perhaps, the detection of the hypothetical pulsar black hole binary system by the proposed Square Kilometre Array - the largest single radio telescope in the world.
