Book Carcassonne Environment France

Download or read book Carcassonne Environment France written by Lucas Ball and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carcassonne Environment, France. France Ideal City Discovery, Touristic Guide. Perched on a rocky hilltop and bristling with zigzag battlements, stout walls and spiky turrets, the fortified city of Carcassonne looks like something out of a children's storybook when it's seen from afar. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, it's most people's idea of the perfect medieval castle. The Cité Médiévale, as the old walled town is now known, attracts over four million visitors every year, peaking in high summer. Time your visit for late in the day (or better still, for spring or autumn) to truly appreciate the old town's medieval charm. Poised atop a hill overlooking lush green countryside and the Aude River, Carcassonne's fortified upper town, known as La Cité, looks lifted from the pages of a storybook-literally, perhaps, as its circle of towers and battlements is said to be the setting for Charles Perrault's classic tale Puss in Boots. With its turrets and castellated walls, it appeals to children and those with a penchant for the Middle Ages. The lower, newer part of the city is the Ville Basse, where you'll find the train station and a smattering of sights (most notably the Musée des Beaux-Arts).

Book France 1715 1804

  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book France 1715 1804 written by Gwynne Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gwynne Lewis’ history opens with a full analysis of all the components of traditional France, including political and religious structures, the seigneurial system, the bourgeoisie and the poor. Part two examines the meaning and challenge of the Enlightenment, with particular reference to women and the mass of the poor. Part three concentrates upon the relationship between the shift to laissez-faire economics, popular revolts and government repression, providing the essential background to the Revolutionary decade of the 1790s. The Revolution witnessed the rise of a politicised ‘Popular Movement’ that achieved, briefly, a measure of popular democracy. War and counter-revolution blocked the move towards real democracy, strengthened the authority of the centralised state, and enhanced the credibility of bourgeois political and economic power. One of the main contentions of this work is that the failure of both monarchical and Revolutionary regimes to deal with the massive social problem of poverty played a far larger part in explaining the collapse of the Bourbons in 1789, and the failure of democracy during the 1790s, than most historians have allowed. Likewise, the importance of religion in directing the momentous events of this period has also been under-estimated.

What’s Covered? Get to Know France: The Ile-de-France region is the nation’s heartland. Here Louis XIV built vainglorious Versailles, Chartres brings the faithful to their knees, and Monet’s Giverny enchants all. To the south, the Loire Valley offers a parade of royal and near-royal chateaus that magnificently capture France’s golden age of monarchy. Northwest Normandy is sculpted with cliff-lined coasts and a dramatic past marked by Mont-St-Michel’s majestic abbey, Rouen’s towering cathedral, and the D-Day beaches. Brittany, a long arm of rocky land stretching into the Atlantic, is a place unto itself with its own language and time-defying towns such as Gauguin’s Pont-Aven and the pirate haven of St-Malo. The region of Alsace-Lorraine may look and sound German, but its main sights---18th-century Nancy, medieval Strasbourg, and the lovely Route du Vine---remain proudly French. For those travelers looking to imbibe, trips to Champagne Country, the capital of bubbly, or Burgundy, whose vineyards are among the world’s best, cannot be missed. Lyon is France’s natural hub where you can ski Mont Blanc or take a heady trip along the Beaujolais Wine Road. Don’t forget Provence, famed for its Lavender Route, the honey-gold hill towns of Luberon, and vibrant cities. The pebble beaches and zillion-dollar houses of the French Riviera have always captivated sun lovers and socialites from amorous St-Tropez and beauteous Antibes, to sophisticated Nice. The southwestern region, The Midi-Pyrenees is less glamorous than the Riviera and Provence but has an array of must-sees including the “pink city” of Toulouse and fairy-tale Carcassonne. The Dordogne is a stone-cottage pastoral studded with fairy-tale castles, storybook villages, and France’s top prehistoric sights. You’ll fall under Basque Country’s spell with Bay of Biscay resorts like Biarritz, coastal villages such as St-Jean-De-Luz, or the Pyrenean peaks. Relax by sampling the wines of Bordeaux, the standard against which others are measured. They've made the city rich and the owners of its vineyards even richer. No trip to France would be complete without a stop in Paris. A quayside vista that takes in the Seine, a passing boat, Notre-Dame, the Eiffel tower, and mansard roofs all in one generous sweep is enough to convince you that this is indeed the most beautiful city on Earth. Note: This ebook edition is adapted from Fodor’s France 2011 but differs in some content. Additionally, the ebook edition includes photographs and maps that will appear on black-and-white devices but are optimized for devices that support full-color images.

Book Superplastic Forming of Advanced Metallic Materials

Download or read book Superplastic Forming of Advanced Metallic Materials written by G Giuliano and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra fine-grained metals can show exceptional ductility, known as superplasticity, during sheet forming. The higher ductility of superplastic metals makes it possible to form large and complex components in a single operation without joints or rivets. The result is less waste, lower weight and manufacturing costs, high precision and lack of residual stress associated with welding which makes components ideal for aerospace, automotive and other applications. Superplastic forming of advanced metallic materials summarises key recent research on this important process. Part one reviews types of superplastic metals, standards for superplastic forming, processes and equipment. Part two discusses ways of modelling superplastic forming processes whilst the final part of the book considers applications, including superplastic forming of titanium, aluminium and magnesium alloys.
