Book Carburization decarburization Behavior of Ferritic Steels in a Sodium Environment LMFBR

Download or read book Carburization decarburization Behavior of Ferritic Steels in a Sodium Environment LMFBR written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetics of the carburization-decarburization process of Fe-Cr-Mo ferritic steels in high-temperature flowing sodium have been studied in terms of (1) the equilibrium carbon activity-carbon concentration relationship for the steels, (2) the chromium and molybdenum content in the steel, and (3) the carbon concentration in sodium. Ferritic steels with chromium and molybdenum contents in the range 0.5 to 12 wt % and 0.5 to 2.5 wt %, respectively, were exposed to sodium at temperatures between 773 and 973 K. Carbon equilibration experiments were conducted using 0.05-mm-thick foils, and cylindrical specimens (6.5 mm in diameter) were used to establish the kinetics of carbon migration in the steels. The sodium exposure time varied from 3.6 to 25 Ms.

Book Compatibility of Ferritic Steels in a Sodium Environment Carburization decarburization at 550 to 700 C

Download or read book Compatibility of Ferritic Steels in a Sodium Environment Carburization decarburization at 550 to 700 C written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetics of carburization-decarburization of three commercial and two high-purity ferritic steels with chromium and molybdenum contents in the range 9-12 wt percent and 1-2 wt percent, respectively, was studied in a sodium environment at temperatures between 550 and 700°C. Carbon concentration-distance profiles obtained as a function of sodium-exposure time and temperature showed that the steels carburized below 650°C and decarburized at higher temperatures. The carburization-decarburization behavior of the ferritic steels was compared with that of the 21/4Cr--1Mo ferritic and Type 304 stainless steels. Microstructural examination of sodium-exposed specimens revealed that the atom ratio of molybdenum to carbon in the steel had a significant effect on the stability of the carbide structure in equilibrium with the ferrite matrix. Nitrogen transfer from the commercial 9Cr--2Mo steel to the sodium environment occurred at temperatures between 550 and 700°C. (auth).

Book Generalized Method of Computing Carbon diffusion Profiles in Austenitic Stainless Steels Exposed to a Sodium Environment

Download or read book Generalized Method of Computing Carbon diffusion Profiles in Austenitic Stainless Steels Exposed to a Sodium Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous experimental observations on the carburization-decarburization behavior of austenitic stainless steels in hightemperature flowing sodium have been reported; however, quantitative predictions of carbon diffusion in the steels under specific environmental conditions have been difficult. A mathematical analysis for the process has been developed that incorporates (1) the thermodynamic and kinetic information for carbon in the alloys, (2) the thermal-mechanical treatment of the material (solution annealed versus cold worked) that influences the microstructure, and (3) the carbon concentration in sodium and its dependence on sodium-system parameters. Carbon concentrationdistance profiles in Types 304 and 316 stainless steel were generated as a function of time, temperature, and carbon concentration in sodium and compared with experimental data. The analysis was used to evaluate the carburization -- decarburization behavior of Type 316 stainless steel fuel cladding exposed to sodium and to develop carbon-diffusion profiles in Type 304 stainless steel intermediate-heat-exchanger piping upon exposure to primary- and secondary-system sodium for periods to 30 y. Book Analysis of Carbon Transport in the EBR II and FFTF Primary Sodium Systems

Download or read book Analysis of Carbon Transport in the EBR II and FFTF Primary Sodium Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of the carburization-decarburization behavior of austenitic stainless steels in the primary heat-transport systems of the EBR-II and FFTF has been made that is based upon a kinetic model for the diffusion process and the surface area of steel in contact with flowing sodium at various temperatures in the two systems. The analysis was performed for operating conditions that result in sodium outlet temperatures of 474 and 566°C in the FFTF and 470°C in the EBR-II. If there was no external source of carbon to the system, i.e., other than the carbon initially present in the steel and the sodium, the dynamic-equilibrium carbon concentrations calculated for the FFTF primary sodium were approximately 0.025 and approximately 0.065 ppm for the 474 and 566°C outlet temperatures, respectively, and approximately 0.018 ppm for the EBR-II primary system. The analysis indicated that a carbon-source rate of approximately 250 g/y would be required to increase the carbon concentration of the EBR-II sodium to the measured range of approximately 0.16--0.19 ppm. An evaluation of possible carbon sources and the amount of carbonaceous material introduced into the reactor cover gas and sodium suggests that the magnitude of the calculated contamination rate is reasonable. For a 566°C outlet temperature, carbonaceous material would have to be introduced into the FFTF primary system at a rate approximately 4--6 times higher than in EBR-II to achieve the same carbon concentration in the sodium in the two systems. Since contamination rates of approximately 1500 g/y are unlikely, high-temperature fuel cladding in the FFTF should exhibit decarburization similar to that observed in laboratory loop systems, in contrast to the minimal compositional changes that result after exposure of Type 316 stainless steel to EBR-II sodium at temperatures between approximately 625 and 650°C.
