Book Reaction of Carbonyl Fluoride with Fluorine in the Presence of Various Fluorides as Catalysts

Download or read book Reaction of Carbonyl Fluoride with Fluorine in the Presence of Various Fluorides as Catalysts written by R. Craig Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fluorides KF, RbF and CsF have been known to serve as catalysts for the reaction, CF2O + F2 yielding CF3OF. The list of catalysts for this process has now been enlarged to include NaF, MgF2, CaF2, SrF2, BaF2 and LaF3. Silver fluoride, usually a mixture of AgF2 with AgF, has been known to catalyze the reaction of CF2O with F2 to give both CF3OF and CF3OOCF3. It has now been shown that TlF3 behaves like silver fluoride. It has also been shown that many other fluorides of metals give higher yields of CF3OOCF3 than of CF3OF but require higher temperatures. Various possible mechanisms for these catalytic processes are discussed. (Author).

Book Phosgene

    Book Details:
  • Author : T.A. Ryan
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 1996-05-24
  • ISBN : 0080538800
  • Pages : 979 pages

Download or read book Phosgene written by T.A. Ryan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-05-24 with total page 979 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phosgene, COCl2 is a C1 chemical of major industrial importance. The annual production, worldwide, is more than 1 million tons; 90% of which is used in the manufacture of isocyanates and of polyurethane and polycarbonate resins. Phosgene is also extensively used as a synthetic reagent in organic chemistry, in particular in the preparation of acyl chlorides, chloroformate esters, organic carbonates and carbamoyl chlorides.Although more than 7000 papers have appeared on phosgene and some 1000 papers on its analogues, this is the first book on these interesting chemicals. It presents a critical treatise of phosgene, ranging from its discovery and subsequent use as a war gas to some potential applications of the material into the 21st century. It includes chapters on biological effects and industrial hygiene; on synthesis, formation and manufacture; analysis, uses, environmental effects, and physical and thermodynamic properties. Reactions with organic and inorganic materials are described. Four of the seventeen chapters are devoted to a description of the carbonyl halides (especially carbonyl difluoride) related to phosgene, and a special section deals collectively with the electronic structures of carbonyl halide molecules.Featuring the first-ever comprehensive discussion of the medical effects of phosgene poisoning and the most modern methods of treating exposure victims, the book will be of interest to historians and militarists and those working in the chemical industries (heavy chemicals, agricultural and pharmaceutical), university libraries, hospitals, medical research centres, museums, environmental research centres, poison units and health and safety institutions world-wide.

Excerpt: Phosgene is the chemical compound with the formula COCl2. This colorless gas gained infamy as a chemical weapon during World War I. It is also a valued industrial reagent and building block in synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. In low concentrations, its odor resembles freshly cut hay or grass. In addition to its industrial production, small amounts occur naturally from the breakdown and the combustion of organochlorine compounds, such as those used in refrigeration systems. The chemical was named by combining the Greek words 'phos' (meaning light) and genesis (birth); it does not mean it contains any phosphorus (cf. phosphine). Phosgene is a planar molecule as predicted by VSEPR theory. The C=O distance is 1.18 A, the C-Cl distance is 1.74 A and the Cl-C-Cl angle is 111.8 . It is one of the simplest acid chlorides, being formally derived from carbonic acid. Industrially, phosgene is produced by passing purified carbon monoxide and chlorine gas through a bed of porous activated carbon, which serves as a catalyst: CO + Cl2 COCl2 ( Hrxn = 107.6kJ/mol)The reaction is exothermic, therefore the reactor must be...

Book Fluorocarbon and Related Chemistry

Download or read book Fluorocarbon and Related Chemistry written by R E Banks and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
