The centrepiece of the book, however, remains a series of descriptions, in stratigraphic order, of the depositional history and hydrocarbon related rock units of the North Sea.

Book A Revised Correlation of Carboniferous Rocks in the British Isles

Download or read book A Revised Correlation of Carboniferous Rocks in the British Isles written by C. N. Waters and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report revises and expands upon the 1976 and 1978 publications for the Dinantian and Silesian, respectively, combining them into a single account of British and Irish Carboniferous stratigraphy. The need to update the two Special Reports reflects the considerable advances in Carboniferous geology over the last 30 years. The report covers developments in international chronostratigraphy and incorporates wholesale reassessments of British lithostratigraphy. A huge volume of biostratigraphical information has been published over recent decades and the report summarizes the key information. Carboniferous rocks have long been of economic importance, but it is the search for hydrocarbons, in its infancy at the time of the previous reports, which has greatly increased our understanding of Carboniferous successions offshore and at depth, particularly in southern and eastern England. This Special Report will be a valuable reference for research and applied geoscientists working on rocks of Carboniferous age in the UK, Ireland and offshore areas.

Download or read book Petroleum Sedimentology written by Winfried Zimmerle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-04-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the principles and methods of petroleum sedimentology is essential for oil and gas exploration and exploitation. This book is designed as an introductory text for students in petroleum geology and applied sedimentology as well as a useful companion for advanced technicians, explorationists, geophysicists and petroleum engineers. Source rock, lithology and type of trap define the quality of a hydrocarbon accumulation. This interrelationship is exemplified by seven case histories worldwide (NW Europe, Saudi Arabia, U.S.A., Mexico, CIS, China). Moreover, successful exploitation and enhanced oil recovery often depend on an adequate knowledge of the sedimentology of a reservoir. Photographs illustrate macroscopic and microscopic aspects of source rocks as well as reservoir sandstones and limestones that are most important for hydrocarbon exploration. A comprehensive list of references encourages further study.

Book Cross Border Themes in Petroleum Geology I The North Sea

Download or read book Cross Border Themes in Petroleum Geology I The North Sea written by S. Patruno and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2022 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cross-border approach to exploration, appraisal and development is important in mature basins such as the North Sea, where the ‘low hanging fruit’ have long gone. This approach emphasizes the need to see the basin as one geological entity, in order to maximize economic recovery and prepare the area for the energy transition. This volume offers an up-to-date, ‘geology-without-borders’ view of the stratigraphy, sedimentology, tectonics and oil-and-gas exploration trends of the entire North Sea basin, along with the challenges associated with differences in data continuity and nomenclature across median lines. This volume includes overviews of cross-border play statistics, lithostratigraphic naming conventions and exploration performance through to new facies models for cross-border areas. As such, this volume will be a valuable reference for every geoscientist working in the North Sea for years to come.

Book Introduction to the Petroleum Geology of the North Sea

Download or read book Introduction to the Petroleum Geology of the North Sea written by K. W. Glennie and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the outcome of a two-day short course held annually in London, and is based on the manual distributed to the participants. The book falls into three broad sections. The first is a summary of the history of exploration in the North Sea, followed by a review of the structural framework and pre-Permian development of the region. The second section is a series of descriptions in stratigraphical order, of the depositional history and hydrocarbon-related rock units from the Permian to the Tertiary. The last section brings the material together with a discussion of the various exploration plays - why the oil and gas is where it is, what of the future?" --

Book Geological Exploration in Murzuq Basin

Download or read book Geological Exploration in Murzuq Basin written by D. Worsley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-12-19 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Murzuq Basin is a large intracratonic sag basin located in southwestern Libya. Exploration efforts started in this vast and remote Saharan region already in 1957 and 60 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, resulting in over 20 discoveries with around 4,000 million barrels of oil in place. Most discoveries have been made in Ordovician sandstone reservoirs sourced by hot shales of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Oil is already being produced and exported from the area, but the basin's total hydrocarbon potential is still poorly understood. Recent exploration - especially the major discovery and initial development of the Giant "Elephant" Field - has greatly increased interest for the area's potential. Many petroleum geologists and companies now believe that the basin may well develop into a new major hydrocarbon province which will significantly contribute to Europe's energy needs in the next decades. This book presents papers from a conference held at Sebha University - on the eastern margins of the Murzug Basin - in September 1998.The book continues an ongoing series of presentations of the geology of Libya, but the 25 contributions herein mostly centre on the Murzuq Basin itself and on nearby areas. There are still many unresolved questions in terms of geological and hydrocarbon exploration in these difficult desert areas, but the papers herein will hopefully present a first comprehensive overview of an exciting frontier exploration region. About half of the papers are directly related to hydrocarbon exploration, and to source rock and reservoir development, but a wide variety of other features are also described, ranging from palaeontology and biostratigraphy to ore geology and water resources, covering the entire geological column from the Precambrian to the Holocene. The book concludes with a bibliography covering all geological aspects of this challenging but very promising frontier area.
