Book excerpt: This assessment presents a science-based analysis of the current and potential capabilities of the UK's forests and forest products to contribute to the mitigation of climate change. It shows unequivocally that: (1) a significant contribution to mitigation could be made by maintaining and increasing the rates at which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by the UK's forests - the abatement of emissions; (2) there are other major contributions that forests and trees can make, for example in urban environments, and (3) that there are areas where substantial research is required to assess and reduce impacts and to develop the contribution of UK forestry to the mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change. The report follows the IPCC convention of identifying key findings at the start of each chapter. Authors have also identified research priorities at the end of their respective chapters and these proposals require serious and urgent consideration. Gaps in understanding are identified and, in some instances, there is a clear requirement for more scientific evidence in order that uncertainties in the projected impacts of climate change can be reduced. The driver in the new research programmes will be the need to enhance the contribution that UK trees and woodlands can make to a low carbon economy. It is the expressed intention of the report to provide the detailed evidence required to achieve sustainable forest management under what will be complex and changing climatic circumstances.

Forest ecosystem carbon yield tables, representing stand-level merchantable volume and carbon pools as a function of stand age, were developed for 51 forest types within 10 regions of the United States. Separate tables were developed for afforestation and reforestation. Because carbon continues to be sequestered in harvested wood, approaches to calculate carbon sequestered in harvested forest products are included. Although these calculations are simple and inexpensive to use, the uncertainty of results obtained by using representative average values may be high relative to other techniques that use site- or project-specific data. The estimates and methods in this report are consistent with guidelines being updated for the U.S. Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Program and with guidelines developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The CD-ROM included with this publication contains a complete set of tables in spreadsheet format.

Book excerpt: This report is the second in a series that examines the role of natural forests and woodlands in the storage of carbon. Understanding the role of natural ecosystems in carbon storage is an important part of solving the climate change problem. This report presents a landscape-wide green carbon account of the 'Great Western Woodlands' (GWW), sixteen million hectares of mostly contiguous natural woody vegetation to the east of the wheatbelt in south-western Western Australia. For the first time, we provide an overview of the vegetation structure, climate, geology and historical land use of the GWW, and examine how these interact to affect the carbon dynamics of this region's landscape ecosystems. An analysis of time-series of satellite imagery is used to develop a fire history of the GWW since the 1970s. These layers of environmental information, along with field survey data and remotely sensed greenness, are used to construct a spatial model to estimate biomass carbon stocks of the woodlands at the present day, and to infer an upper limit to the carbon sequestration potential of the GWW. A range of management options to enable protection of high quality carbon stocks and restoration of degraded stocks are evaluated.
