Book Sensors for Environment Health and Security

Download or read book Sensors for Environment Health and Security written by M.-I. Baraton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-25 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Sensors for Environment, Health and Security: Advanced Materials and Technology” was held in Vichy (France) on September 16–27, 2007 where more than 65 participants, ranging from Ph. D. students to experienced senior scientists, met and exchanged ideas and know-how in a friendly atmosphere. The present book intends to cover the main topics of this NATO ASI through 32 chapters distributed over two parts (Part I: “Materials and Technologies” and Part II: “Applications to Environment, Health and Security”). The scientific programme of the NATO ASI consisted in 28 1-hour lectures given by 14 invited lecturers, 5 additional 1-hour lectures given by seminar speakers, 22 oral presentations by selected ASI participants and a poster session. The programme was divided into four sessions: (1) Advanced materials and technologies; (2) Sensors for environment; (3) Sensors for health; (4) Sensors for security. During the “Advanced Materials and Technologies” session (Part I of the present book), the lectures were dedicated to critical analyses of current methods for the synthesis of materials, nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanowires, nanotubes, ...) and nanocomposites to be used for the fabrication of sensing devices, mainly semiconductor sensors. Among the synthesis methods, chemical (sol-gel, etc. ) and physical methods (laser deposition, DC magnetron sputtering, etc. ) were discussed. Several lectures addressed characterization techniques and it was concluded that the physical and chemical control of the materials/nanomaterials, including surface chemistry, remains a key issue for the reproducibility of the final device.

Book Development of a Carbon Dioxide Partial Pressure Sensor

Download or read book Development of a Carbon Dioxide Partial Pressure Sensor written by Gerald Jankowitz and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to design and develop a compact airborne CO2 sensor unit capable of sensing and measuring the CO2 content of manned, sealed environments. A prototype carbon dioxide sensor was designed, built, and calibrated. The sensor operates by alternately comparing the infrared absorption of the air sample at 4.26 microns, where CO2 exhibits strong absorption and at 3.90 microns where it has little absorption. A two color rotating filter provides sampling 200 times per second. The unit weighs 10 pounds and has a power consumption of 70 watts. The instrument is capable of detecting a concentration of at least 0.30% CO2 and has full scale capability to 5%. (Author).

Book Carbon Dioxide Sensing with 2D Conductive Metal organic Frameworks

Download or read book Carbon Dioxide Sensing with 2D Conductive Metal organic Frameworks written by Yicong Ge and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research focuses on chemiresistive sensing of carbon dioxide (CO2) using a series of two-dimensional (2D) conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with amine-based linkers. The 2D MOFs studied here show carbon dioxide sensitivity at concentrations as low as 1000 ppm. The identity of both the metal and ligand affects sensing performance in terms of sensitivity, reversibility, selectivity, and response to moisture. Experimental and computational data indicate that the amine groups of the ligands play a key role in the CO2 sensing mechanism. This work represents the first use of electrically conductive MOFs for CO2 sensing, and demonstrates a combination of sensitivity and selectivity that is promising for practical applications.

Book Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Sensor

Download or read book Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Sensor written by Frank B. Leitz and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the program was to develop a novel carbon dioxide sensor based on obtaining changes in the electrical resistance of anion-exchange resin proportional to the ambient partial pressure of carbon dioxide. The change in resistance is due to the increased ionization of a weakly ionized base in the presence of a sightly acid gas. A laboratory program was conducted to evaluate the response of various types of weak-base ion-exchange polymers to carbon dioxide concentrations in the range of 0 to 4%. The optimum material consisted of a condensation polymer of resorcinol, formaldehyde and triethylenetetramine. A laboratory model of the CO2 Sensor was fabricated using these sensing elements in the form of small, thin strips. In order to minimize the effects of humidity and temperature, the model contained two sensing elements, one being a reference. A guard chamber was provided to absorb any strongly-acid gases. Electrical readout is made on a balancing potentiometer with an earphone detector. The Sensor is small (about 50 cubic inches), weighs less than 6 ounces, has a power requirement of less than 0.5 watts, and its operation is independent of gravity. (Author).

Book A New Carbon Dioxide Sensing Method Suitable for Use in Microelectrode Sensors

Download or read book A New Carbon Dioxide Sensing Method Suitable for Use in Microelectrode Sensors written by David Wong and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present electrochemical CO2-sensors are basically modified pH-electrodes; the operating principle of which is based on the measurement of a potential that is effectively a linear function of the logarithm of H+ ion concentration. The relationship between pH and PCO2 is delta pH = 0.97 delta log 10PCO2. Since one unit of pH at room temperature corresponds to less than 60 mV potential change, it is obvious that the PCO2 measurement is intrinsically inaccurate. In addition, this method is not conductive to miniaturization and it is susceptible to the same basic problems associated with the pH-electrode, i.e. low sensitivity, slow response and considerable drift. The feasibility of developing a new electrochemical carbon dioxide sensing method based on the reductive adsorption of CO2 onto a noble metal electrode and the subsequent anodic oxidation of the 'Reduced-CO2' species has been investigated experimentally. It was established that under proper conditions the presence of oxygen does not interfere with the measurement of CO2 concentration.

Book Topics in Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Download or read book Topics in Fluorescence Spectroscopy written by Joseph R. Lakowicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-11-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy is widely used as a research tool in bioch- istry and biophysics. These uses of fluorescence have resulted in extensive knowledge of the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules. This information has been gained by studies of phenomena that affect the excited state, such as the local environment, quenching processes, and energy transfer. Topics in Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Volume 4: Probe Design and Chemical Sensing reflects a new trend, which is the use of time-resolved fluorescence in analytical and clinical chemistry. These emerging applications of time-resolved fluorescence are the result of continued advances in laser detector and computer technology. For instance, pho- multiplier tubes (PMT) were previously bulky devices. Miniature PMTs are now available, and the performance of simpler detectors is continually improving. There is also considerable effort to develop fluorophores that can be excited with the red/ne- infrared (NIR) output of laser diodes. Using such probes, one can readily imagine small time-resolved fluorometers, even hand-held devices, being used fordoctor’s office or home health care.
