Book Carbon dioxide emissions of the container transport from Far East into the European hinterland through Jade Weser Port compared to other European deepwater ports

Download or read book Carbon dioxide emissions of the container transport from Far East into the European hinterland through Jade Weser Port compared to other European deepwater ports written by Konstantin Veidenheimer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, course: BWL - Logistik, Verkehr, Transport und Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: This dissertation investigates carbon dioxide emissions of maritime container transport from Asia into the European hinterland through the emerging German Jade-Weser-Port (JWP) compared to the deepwater ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Trieste. Furthermore the deepwater ports are compared on the basis of competitive factors such as hinterland connectivity. The thesis also addresses CO2 reduction measures for the maritime door-to-door container transport. Maritime container transport accounts for approximately 90 percent of global trade volumes. Largest container vessels represent challenges for container ports, such as the required draft of 15.5 meters. In order to be competitive, many ports try to integrate in global supply chains. Furthermore, environmental issues play a growing role in the maritime business. Thus, the dissertation concentrates on CO2 emissions from maritime supply chains. Carbon emissions are calculated by applying activity-based approach for road emissions and energy-based method for ship emissions. The online carbon auditing tool “Ecotransit” is used for carbon auditing of rail and inland waterway emissions. For ports an average value of 17.5 kg CO2/TEU is assumed. The main findings are that north-eastern part of Germany and northern region of Eastern Europe can be reached under minimum CO2 emissions from Jade-Weser-Port. However, JWP provides the worst hinterland connection compared to other deepwater ports. Antwerp and Trieste are inappropriate to serve ultra large container vessels because of insufficient access channel and unsuitable quay cranes, respectively. Ship emissions can be cut by more than 53% by reducing the speed from 19 to 24 knots. In order to reduce ocean emissions it is recommended to reduce cruising speed and to operate larger ships. Port emissions can be reduced by providing on-shore electricity for ships. Furthermore it is essential to modernise JWP’s rail connection since the rail-track is not electrified over a distance of around 53 kilometres and has two single track sections of 5 and 7 kilometres. The main conclusion is that JWP should implement carbon auditing from the start of its operations.[...]

Book Atmospheric Pollution of International Maritime Transportation Measurement and Cost Estimation of Trade Lane Specific Container Trade Activities in Hong Kong

Download or read book Atmospheric Pollution of International Maritime Transportation Measurement and Cost Estimation of Trade Lane Specific Container Trade Activities in Hong Kong written by Christoph Heinbach and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction 1.1 Approach and Motivation: World transportation overcomes the distance between places of origin and places of demand for both passengers and freight. Almost three quarters of the world s surface is covered by water and around 80 percent of the world trade by weight is moved in this mode. Offshore trade activities (confined to container trade) describe a synonym that features globalization. In fact, transportation including these activities is the least visible critical element in world economies. But the importance of environment has barely been discussed in the context of pollution performance from individual economies. As a consequence, trade-lane (confined to specific world sea shipping routes between individual ports) emissions, generated by economies, are not precisely reviewed by government agencies. In addition, the real amount and costs of atmospheric pollutions linked to offshore trade-lane performance are not entirely understood by consumers. Environmental awareness seems to be seldom raised in our society. In fact, the ignorance of mankind is the most important factor due to since appropriate information is very little available. Some emissions are contributing to a process of retaining the heat from solar radiation by the planet Earth also referred to as greenhouse effect . The greenhouse effect, which originally has a positive effect, because it makes the planet Earth warm enough to sustain life, is responsible for the increase of the global temperature which has quite apparent effects on our world. Melting sea ice effects and rising seawater levels are only a few examples. To be precise, freight transportation is responsible for approximately 25 percent of the total global transport emissions, equal to 1.65 billion tonnes of CO2 per year. With increasing global demand in commodities and goods the magnitude of transportation also rises, essentially addressing the consumer s and industry s need of delivering shipments with different, sizes, volumes, weight and requirements at the right place, to the right time, in the right quantity and to the right costs. From what has been said earlier it is curious why no generally accepted criterion to allocate international transportation pollution is currently in use. While diffident efforts were made to include these emissions in international conventions, CO2 emissions related to international freight are not involved in the pollution reduction goals of the [...]

This book was released on 2013 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Due to its dependence on fossil fuel combustion and the fact that it is one of the least regulated anthropogenic emission sources, emissions from the marine transport sector contribute significantly to air pollution and climate change. The main objective of this report is to provide a comprehensive review of recent literature and reports, taking into account expert knowledge, on the maritime transport sector. The report addresses the sector's impact on air quality and climate forcing in Europe. In order to provide this overview a broad range of topics have been addressed. These include: registration of ships, international maritime law and international and European environmental legislation (Chapter 2); monitoring and modelling of maritime fuel consumption and resulting emissions (Chapter 3); past and future trends of air pollutants and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping (Chapter 4); attribution of air quality problems to emission from the maritime transport sector by evaluating atmospheric observations and modelling data (Chapter 5); and understanding the climate forcing characteristics of ship emissions and atmospheric modelling (Chapter 6)". -- EU Bookshop.

Book Treatment of Molasses Waste Water Using Chitosan and Activated Carbon Waste Water Treatment

Download or read book Treatment of Molasses Waste Water Using Chitosan and Activated Carbon Waste Water Treatment written by Humphrey Mutuma and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, grade: 87, Moi University, language: English, abstract: This degree thesis studied the viability of treating molasses waste water using a combination of chitosan and activated carbon. Chitosan is obtained by deacetylation of chitin and is an important polymer in water treatment. Activated carbon is a powerful absorbent that is used in filtration. Effects of temperature, time, oh and agitation was studied. The research pointed important leads to embracing chitosan in waste water treatment. Kenya is a major sugar producer with a sugar production output of 591,658 tonnes. The sugar industry encompasses sugar refining which yields molasses used in molasses distilleries to produce ethanol. The molasses distillery produces distillery waste known as spent wash which has a high BOD/COD, bad odor and brown color. The high BOD/COD can be removed by conventional means such as aerobic and anaerobic digesters, but it is this brown caramelized compounds known as melanoidins that must be removed by unconventional means since they are recalcitrant and difficult to biodegrade biologically. This project aims to explore options of removing recalcitrant compounds in molasses waste water by adsorption process using powdered activated carbon and chitosan a biopolymer derived from chitin. Sugarcane molasses is the by-product of the sugar production industry which are generated during sugar production. Sugarcane molasses contains 50% fermentable sugar is dark brown, putrid and viscous liquid. Sugarcane molasses is a feedstock for ethanol production and is used in a ratio of 1:1 for fermentation and purification of spirit. The product collected as bottom products form spent wash which is the major constituent of molasses waste water. Properties of molasses include high acidity, strong odor, coloring pigments due to presence of melanoidins, metal sulfides and phenolics giving it brown color. Spent wash

Book Handbook of Terminal Planning

Download or read book Handbook of Terminal Planning written by Jürgen W. Böse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-26 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Container Terminals (CT) operate as central nodes in worldwide hub-and-spoke networks and link ocean-going vessels with smaller feeder vessels as well as with inbound and outbound hinterland transportation systems using road, rail, or inland waterways. The volume of transcontinental container flows has gained appreciably over the last five decades -- throughput figures of CT reached new records, frequently with double-digit annual growth rates. Stimulated by throughput requirements and stronger competition between terminals settled in the same region or serving a similar hinterland, respectively, cost efficiency and throughput capabilities become more and more important. Nowadays, both terminal capacity and costs have to be regarded as key indicators for CT competitiveness. In respect of this steady growth, this handbook focuses on planning activities being aimed at “order of magnitude improvements” in terminal performance and economic viability. On the one hand the book is intended to provide readership with technological and organizational CT basics for strategic planning. On the other hand this book offers methodical assistance for fundamental dimensioning of CT in terms of 'technique', 'organization' or 'man'. The former primarily considers comprehensive information about container handling technologies representing the state of the art for present terminal operations, while the latter refers to methodological support comprising in particular quantitative solutions and modeling techniques for strategic terminal decisions as well as straightforward design guidelines. The handbook includes an introductory contribution which gives an overview of strategic planning problems at CT and introduces the contributions of the volume with regard to their relationship in this field. Moreover, each paper contains a section or paragraph that describes the impact of findings investigated by the author(s) for problem-solving in long-term planning of CT (as an application domain). The handbook intends to provide solutions and insights that are valuable for both practitioners in industry who need effective planning approaches to overcome problems and weaknesses in terminal design/development and researchers who would like to inform themselves about the state of the art in methodology of strategic terminal planning or be inspired by new ideas. That is to say, the handbook is addressed to terminal planners in practice as well as to students of maritime courses of study and (application oriented) researchers in the maritime field.
