Book The Effect of Pre Exercise Feeding on Endurance Performance

Download or read book The Effect of Pre Exercise Feeding on Endurance Performance written by Carrie Lynn Petteys and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glycogen depletion can have a deleterious effect on endurance performance. The use of carbohydrates ingested either before exercise or during has been a topic of numerous studies. However previous studies have been seriously limited by the use of non-athletically representative outcome measures. This study was designed to test whether or not ingesting a carbohydrate solution 30 min prior to endurance exercise would have an effect on endurance performance. Ten well-trained cyclists performed three 40 km time trials (one for habituation purposes), using a control and a carbohydrate solution (35 grams). Time to completion, power output, velocity, blood lactate, blood glucose (BG), HR, and RPE were measured during the ride. There were no significant differences, except for a significant drop in BG at the beginning of the ride. Based on these results, the use of carbohydrates before endurance exercise does not hinder endurance performance.

Book Nutrient Timing

Download or read book Nutrient Timing written by Chad M. Kerksick and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports nutrition has evolved beyond what to eat and how much to eat to now include the question of when to eat. A hot topic in sports nutrition, nutrient timing is a dietary concept that takes into account time as a missing dimension in athletic performance and recovery. Not only is the consumption of nutrients in ideal amounts and proportions important, but the timing with which they are administered is also of prime importance—the right nutrients at the ideal time to affect performance and muscular growth. Nutrient Timing: Metabolic Optimization for Health, Performance, and Recovery presents the most authoritative text to date that scientifically examines the contemporary topic of nutrient timing. Worldwide research continues to rapidly explore the metabolic impact of nutrient timing and how its proper application may help to improve performance. With contributions from scientists and practitioners in the field, this book gathers the latest evidence-based information on this cutting-edge area. The chapters cover macronutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids—and their role in sporting activity, as well as an examination of vitamins and minerals. The core of the book focuses on pre-exercise, mid-exercise, and post-exercise considerations for both resistance and aerobically mediated activity. Using the models presented, individuals may improve performance, promote optimal adaptations to training, maximize recovery, and facilitate healthy interactions with their environment. The final chapters of the book describe future concepts in nutrient timing, including the impact of protein source in the context of timing, how nutrient timing can fit in with a comprehensive recovery program, and the application of the ideas discussed in unique populations such as the aged, the military, and populations interested in weight loss. This text provides solid data from the scientists themselves, giving researchers, teachers, coaches, and medical and health care professionals the necessary information they need to accurately and effectively determine how nutrients can impact certain outcomes and, most importantly, how to practically apply this knowledge.

Book Impact of Pre exercise Feedings with a Low Or High Glycemic Index on the Ergogenic Effects of Carbohydrate Mouth rinsing During Cycling

Download or read book Impact of Pre exercise Feedings with a Low Or High Glycemic Index on the Ergogenic Effects of Carbohydrate Mouth rinsing During Cycling written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: Carbohydrate (CHO) ingestion during exercise enhances performance in short endurance events (~ 1 hr) due to neural influences, as demonstrated by the efficacy of CHO mouth-rinsing during cycling. However, the magnitude of these neural effects may be blunted following pre-exercise CHO feedings. This study examined whether the glycemic index (GI) of a pre-exercise meal affected time-trial (TT) performance in cyclists using a CHO mouth-rinse during exercise. Methods: Eight cyclists (age: 24 ± 6 yr; VO2max: 61 ± 8 ml×kg-1×min-1) completed 4 exercise trials, consisting of 15 min of constant-load cycling followed by a simulated 30-km TT. Treatments were: a) L-CHO: low GI CHO beverage pre-exercise (1.5 g×kg-1 CHO, 120 min prior), CHO mouth rinsing during exercise (6.4% maltodextrin solution), b) H-CHO: high GI CHO beverage (1.5 g×kg-1 CHO) pre-exercise, CHO mouth rinsing during-exercise, c) PL-CHO: placebo beverage pre-exercise, CHO mouth rinsing during exercise, and d) PL-PL: placebo beverage pre-exercise, placebo mouth rinsing during exercise. Blood glucose was measured before beverage consumption and at 30 and 120 min following ingestion. Physiological measurements (VO2, VE, RER, HR, RPE, glucose, lactate, and gastrointestinal distress) were assessed during constant-load cycling and the TT. Magnitude-based qualitative inferences were used to assess differences in responses between trials. Results: Blood glucose differed among treatments 30 min post-feeding (H-CHO > L-CHO > PL-CHO = PL-PL), and was lower in H-CHO versus PL-CHO and PL-PL during subsequent exercise. Compared to PL-CHO, TT performance was faster in both L-CHO (-0.5 ± 0.8 min; "likely" beneficial) and H-CHO (-0.7 ± 0.7 min; "likely" beneficial), with no systematic differences between L-CHO and H-CHO. However, none of the 3 mouth rinse trials were clearly different from the PL-PL trial. Conclusions: When using a CHO mouth rinse during exercise, CHO ingestion 2 hr prior to cycling enhanced TT performance versus exercise in the fasted state. The GI of the pre-exercise feeding did not systematically affect TT performance in cyclists using a CHO mouth-rinse. However, the impact of these findings is confounded by the lack of performance differences versus a control trial without CHO before or during exercise.
