Book Review of Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Carbide Reactor Fuel Corrosion and Exhibit

Download or read book Review of Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Carbide Reactor Fuel Corrosion and Exhibit written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uranium carbide forms complete, nearly ideal solid solutions with the refractory compounds ZrC, NbC, HfC, and TaC. These compounds have very high melting points. By incorporating uranium carbide into a solid solution, a very high melting point nuclear fuel is attained. In the present study, the thermodynamics of refractory carbide fuels as it relates to vaporization or corrosion behavior is experimentally examined. The vaporization behavior of refractory carbide fuels is modeled, based on the equilibrium partial pressures of important vapor species.

This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion (mass loss) of carbide nuclear fuels due to their exposure to hot hydrogen in nuclear thermal propulsion engine systems greatly impacts the performance, thrust-to-weight and life of such systems. This report provides an overview of key issues and processes associated with the corrosion of carbide materials. Additionally, past pertinent development reactor test observations, as well as related experimental work and analysis modeling efforts are reviewed. At the conclusion, recommendations are presented, which provide the foundation for future corrosion modeling and verification efforts. Pelaccio, Dennis G. and El-Genk, Mohamed S. Book A Review of Carbide Fuel Corrosion for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Applications

Download or read book A Review of Carbide Fuel Corrosion for Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the operation conditions of interest in nuclear thermal propulsion reactors, carbide materials have been known to exhibit a number of life limiting phenomena. These include the formation of liquid, loss by vaporization, creep and corresponding gas flow restrictions, and local corrosion and fuel structure degradation due to excessive mechanical and/or thermal loading. In addition, the radiation environment in the reactor core can produce a substantial change in its local physical properties, which can produce high thermal stresses and corresponding stress fractures (cracking). Time-temperature history and cyclic operation of the nuclear reactor can also accelerate some of these processes. The University of New Mexico's Institute for Space Nuclear Power Studies, under NASA sponsorship has recently initiated a study to model the complicated hydrogen corrosion process. In support of this effort, an extensive review of the open literature was performed, and a technical expert workshop was conducted. This paper summarizes the results of this review.

Book Development of a Robust Tri carbide Fueled Reactor for Multi megawatt Space Power and Propulsion Applications

Download or read book Development of a Robust Tri carbide Fueled Reactor for Multi megawatt Space Power and Propulsion Applications written by Samim Anghaie and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative reactor core design based on advanced, mixed carbide fuels was analyzed for nuclear space power applications. Solid solution, mixed carbide fuels such as (U, Zr, Nb)c and (U, Zr, Ta)C offer great promise as an advanced high temperature fuel for space power reactors. This study addressed the difficulties of fabricating these solid solution fuels in traditional space reactor forms and developed methods of processing these high temperature fuels to support the fabrication of the innovative square lattice honeycomb (SLHC) fuel design. The design, in addition to better lending itself to net-shape fabrication with these advanced fuels, also permits the development of an entire class of propulsion systems from 25 to 250 kN thrust with hydrogen exit temperatures of 2800 to 3000 K for an Isp of 930 to almost 1000 seconds.

Book Nuclear Rocket Engine Reactor

Download or read book Nuclear Rocket Engine Reactor written by Anatoly Lanin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph recounts and details the development of a nuclear rocket engine reactor (NRER). In particular, it explains the working capacity of an active zone NRER under mechanical and thermal load, intensive neutron fluxes, and high-energy generation (up to 30 MBT/l) in a working medium (hydrogen) at temperatures up to 3100 K. The design principles and bearing capacity of reactors area discussed on the basis of simulation experiments and test data of a prototype reactor. Property data of dense constructional, porous thermal insulating and fuel materials such as carbide and uranium carbide compounds in the temperatures interval 300 - 3000 K are presented.; technological aspects of strength and thermal strength resistance of materials are also considered. As well, a procedure to design possible emergency processes in the NRER is developed and risks for their origination are evaluated. Finally, prospects for use in pilotless space devices and piloted interplanetary ships are reviewed.
