Book Carbaryl Applied at Reduced Dosage Rates for Control of Western Spruce Budworm

Download or read book Carbaryl Applied at Reduced Dosage Rates for Control of Western Spruce Budworm written by George P. Markin and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbaryl is registered for control of the western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman), at the dosage rate of 1.12 kg per hectare. That rate and two lower ones were field tested in western Montana in July 1979 to determine if a lower rate would be as effective as the registered dosage. Each dosage was applied to five randomly selected 20-ha plots by helicopter with Beecomist nozzles while larvae were in the fifth and early sixth instars. Reduced dosages of 0.28 and 0.56 kg a.i. per hectare resulted in 83 and 93 percent population reduction, respectively, compared with 93 percent population reduction for the registered dosage of 1.12 kg a.i. per hectare.

Book Aerial Field Tests of Five Insecticides on Western Spruce Budworm in Idaho and Montana 1978 1980

Download or read book Aerial Field Tests of Five Insecticides on Western Spruce Budworm in Idaho and Montana 1978 1980 written by George P. Markin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of five insecticides was applied at two or three application rates by helicopter to 20-ha plots. Effectiveness of each application rate against western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) was judged by cornparing larval population reduction at I5 or 20 days after treatment against populations in untreated check plots. Performance of each insecticide was then compared with the levels of control normally obtained with two registered insecticides. carbaryl and acephate (90 + pct) usually used for western spruce budworrn control. Maximum population reduction from sulprofos (58 pct), phosmet (59 pet). and from the growth regulator BAY SIR- 8514 (58 pet), at all application rates tested was below the acceptable minimum of 90 + percent population reduction. Methomyl reduced populations 92.3 percent at 0.28 kg a.i./ha and 94.0 percent at 0.56 ke a.i./ha. Permethrin at 0.11 kg a.i.iha reduced the population by 93.9 percent. Methonyl and permethrin at these application rates appeared to be as effective as the registered insecticides acephate and carbaryl.

Book Western Spruce Budworm Suppression and Evaluation Project Using Carbaryl

Download or read book Western Spruce Budworm Suppression and Evaluation Project Using Carbaryl written by Douglas L. Parker and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977, carbaryl was aerially applied to a new and increasing western spruce budworm, Choristoneura occidentalis Free., outbreak in an isolated mountain range in New Mexico. Sampling results showed that the larval densities were drastically reduced and remained low 3 years following treatment. In a comparable untreated check area, larval densities were significantly higher. The average density of egg masses per meter square of foliage confirmed the results of the larval sampling and indicated that larval densities would be low in 1980. Relative to the check area, the density of larvae was low in the treated area in 1980, although larval densities reached sufficient levels in portions of three subunites to cause light to moderate defoliation. Tree defoliation in the treatment area, however, remained well below levels recorded in the untreated area. This project was the first attempt to evaluate multi-year effects of an aerially applied chemical on this defoliator. The results indicate that satisfactory suppression of a new and increasing outbreak can be achieved for at least 4 years. No lasting adverse effects of the aerial application of carbaryl could be identified for aquatic organisms and birds. Most species of western spruce budworm parasites were not significantly affected by the treatment program. The percent parasitism by some species increased and others decreased during the 3 years of sampling.

Book Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North central California

Download or read book Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North central California written by Philip M. McDonald and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1964-1967 study on the Challenge Experimental Forest, seedfall was evaluated in 2-, 5-, and 10-acre circular clearcuttings. During the 4 years, 10 seed crops, ranging from light to bumper, were produced by ponderosa pine. white fir, Douglas-fir, and incense cedar. Seedfall ranged from 76 to 40,691 sound seed per acre (188 to 100,547/ha) for a single species in a given year. From 89 to 100 percent of each species' seed fell within an area 1 1/2 times the height of the average dominant tree. Overall, seed distribution was highly variable.
