Book excerpt: L'industrie automobile est confrontée à la problématique de dimensionnement en fatigue de pièces structurelles en polymères thermoplastiques. En effet, de nombreux facteurs liés à l'environnement ou aux conditions de service influencent la tenue en fatigue. Les campagnes d'essais en fatigue classiquement menées sont longues (1 mois pour une condition donnée). L'objectif de cette thèse est d'accélérer la caractérisation en fatigue de ce type de matériau en utilisant des essais d'auto-échauffement. Une première analyse empirique est démontrée possible et permet d'estimer l'endurance limitée à 106 cycles. L'analyse des indicateurs mécaniques et de l'évolution de la microstructure (MEB et Micro-tomographie rayon X) durant les paliers de chargements confirme l'existence d'un seuil correspondant à cette endurance limitée. Dans un second temps, une méthode est proposée en associant un critère énergétique à la courbe d'auto-échauffement complète afin de prédire en moins de 2 jours une courbe de Wöhler déterministe. Ce critère est confronté à l'étude de facteur influent telle la géométrie de l'échantillon ou la reprise en eau du matériau. Une courbe unifiée reliant l'énergie dissipée par cycle au nombre de cycles à la rupture est proposée. Enfin, la méthode est appliquée avec succès à l'étude de structures.

Book excerpt: Cette thèse contribue à la compréhension du comportement en fatigue des thermoplastiques renforcés par des fibres de verre courtes. Deux différents matériaux sont étudiés : un mélange de polybutylène téréphtalate et polyéthylène téréphtalate (PBT+PET GF30) et un polyamide 66 (PA66 GF35). Les enjeux scientifiques de la thèse concernent les chargements multiaxiaux, l'influence de la contrainte moyenne et l'orientation de fibres sur la tenue en fatigue. En outre, les mécanismes de rupture sont abordés au travers de techniques dédiées et ciblées ce qui a permis de proposer un scénario de rupture en fatigue pour le PBT+PET GF30. L'enjeu industriel est de développer un outil de dimensionnement en fatigue. Afin de répondre à ces objectifs, des essais de fatigue sont effectués dans le domaine de la durée de vie limitée (103-106 cycles) et à amplitude constante pour les rapports de charge de R=0,1 et R=-1. L'effet de l’orientation de fibres est étudié sur la base d’essais à différentes orientations en traction ainsi qu'en cisaillement sur des éprouvettes plates. Des chargements multiaxiaux sont appliqués à des éprouvettes tubulaires afin d'évaluer la tenue en fatigue multiaxiale. Dans le but de réduire le nombre d’essais d'identification tout en conservant les effets à décrire (triaxialité, rapport de charge et orientation), un nouveau critère est proposé. L'effet de l'orientation des fibres est simulé en utilisant l'approche de Mori Tanaka afin de calculer les contraintes moyennées. Le critère est implanté dans une chaîne de calcul allant de la mise en œuvre jusqu'à la durée de vie et il est validé sur deux matériaux et une large base de donnée expérimentale.

The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.
