Book excerpt: Cette thèse, réalisée dans le cadre d’une convention CIFRE avec la société ECA-Sinters, se situe dans la continuité de projets de robotique télé-opérée pour des applications médicales non-invasives réalisés au laboratoire de Vision et Robotique ; l’application médicale télé-opérée concerne ici la télé-échographie. Notre travail a porté plus précisément sur le traitement des images ultrasonores sur lesquelles se base l’expert medical pour le contrôle à distance du robot porteur de la sonde échographique positionné sur le patient. Une étude des méthodes actuelles de segmentation d’image ainsi que sur les méthodes permettant d’évaluer un résultat de segmentation, nous conforte dans l’idée d’une non universalité des méthodes de segmentation. La difficulté de partitionner une image ultrasonore en composantes illustre cette affirmation. Nous proposons donc, via l’utilisation combinée d’approches floue et fractale, une caractérisation des divers objets présents au sein de l’image sans réelle segmentation. De plus, le lien démontré entre ces deux approches nous permet de prendre en compte, dans le calcul de la complexité des divers objets, le bruit initialement présent au sein de l’image ultrasonore. Ces résultats obtenus d’un point de vue théorique sont alors appliqués à différents domaines tels que la segmentation ou la compression d’images.

Book excerpt: Dans cette thèse nous avons élaboré puis automatisé une chaîne complète de recherche d'image par le contenu. Ceci nous a permis de définir une sémantique limitée relative à la satisfaction de l'utilisateur quant à la réponse du système. Notre approche est locale c'est-à-dire basée sur les régions de l'image. La décomposition en entités visuelles permet d'exhiber des interactions entres celles-ci et du coup faciliter l'accès à un niveau d'abstraction plus élevé. Nous avons considéré plus particulièrement trois points de la chaîne : l'extraction de régions fiables, leur caractérisation puis la mesure de similarité. Nous avons mis au point une méthode de type C-moyennes floues avec double contrainte spatiale et pyramidale. La classification d'un pixel donné est contrainte à suivre le comportement de ses voisins dans le plan de l'image et de ses ancêtres dans la pyramide. Pour la caractérisation des régions deux méthodes ont été proposées basées sur les courbes de Peano. La première repose sur un principe grammatical et la deuxième manipule le spectre par l'utilisation des filtres de Gabor. La signature de l'image requête ou cible consiste en une liste d'entités visuelles. La mesure de similarité entre entités guide l'appariement. Nous avons élaboré une méthode basée sur la mise en correspondance dans les deux sens, requête vers cible et vice versa, afin de donner indépendamment une grande priorité aux éléments qui se préfèrent mutuellement. Chaque partie du système a été testée et évaluée séparément puis ramenée à l'application CBIR. Notre technique a été évaluée sur des images aériennes (et ou satellitaires). Les résultats en terme de"rappel-précision" sont satisfaisants comparé notamment aux méthodes classiques type matrice de co-occurrence des niveaux de gris et Gabor standard. Pour ouvrir sur de futures extensions et montrer la généralité de notre méthode, la conclusion explique sa transposition à la recherche de situations en conduite automobile, au prix d'une adaptation limitée des paramètres.

La majorité des documents multimédia sont produits sous forme compréssée. De plus comme les utilisateurs demandent des réponses à leur requêtes les plus rapides possible, l'extraction d'information en temps réel même si celle-ci n'est pas très précise est devenue un objectif important. Basée sur des hypothèses formulées ci-dessus, une nouvelle tendance en matière d'analyse pour l'indexation multimédia est parue, elle peut être qualifiée comme paradigme de "rough indexing" ou "indexation grossière". Nous pouvons inclure notre travail dans cette mouvance d'indexation rapide et approximative dans laquelle uniquement les données imprécises telles que les vecteurs du mouvement et les images DC sont exploitées pour produire une indexation fine des objets en avant-plan. Dans ce paradigme nous proposons de combiner à la fois les informations du mouvement et la segmentation basée-couleur pour extraire les objets pertinents des flux vidéo compressés. Il peut arriver que le mouvement d'un objet soit très similaire au mouvement de la caméra ou que l'objet soit statique, aucun objet ne sera alors détecté. Néanmoins, comme un objet ne peut raisonnablement pas apparaître et disparaitre durant une coute séquence d'images, nous proposons de filtrer les séquences d'objets le long de l'axe temporel. Pour ce faire nous proposons une modélisation de la séquence des objets par une super-quadrique. La méthode proposée donne des résultats prometteurs : les ratés de la détection ou les sur-détections peuvent être corrigés par la méthode de filtrage spatio-temporel proposée.

His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
