Elle résulte de la convection mantellique qui transporte la chaleur interne de la Terre vers la surface. Ces mouvements convectifs impliquent l'écoulement en profondeur des roches à l'état solide; Comprendre les mécanismes élémentaires qui permettent aux roches et à leurs minéraux de subir ces grandes déformations est un enjeu majeur en géophysique. Le microscope électronique en transmission (MET) est l'outil clef pour étudier ces mécanismes. De nouvelles techniques basées sur la microscopie électronique à balayage permettent également de mesurer les orientations préférentielles ainsi que les désorientations intracristallines. Le dispositif ACOM-TEM (Automated Crystal Orientation Mapping in Transmission Electron Microscopy) permet de réaliser des cartes d'orientations cristallines à l'échelle du MET. Dans cette thèse, nous explorons les possibilités de cette technique appliquée à la déformation des minéraux. Nous montrons que l'ACOM-TEM peut être appliqué sur des échantillons sensibles à l'irradiation électronique comme le quartz ou des phases de haute pression. L'emploi de cartographies à haute résolution donne une alternative à l'imagerie conventionnelle en contraste de diffraction, applicable aux minéraux sensibles. Nous montrons la force de cette technique pour des échantillons contenant des densités de dislocations élevées ce qui en fait une technique attractive pour l'étude de matériaux très déformés comme dans le cas d'expériences de déformations sous hautes pressions. Nous présentons également des applications à l'étude de phénomènes de restauration et de recristallisation.

Book excerpt: Les matériaux soumis à des ondes de choc subissent des déformations et des transformations de phase. L'étude de leurs mécanismes fait l'objet de ce travail. Les échantillons étudiés proviennent du cratère d'impact météoritique de Ries, Allemagne, et sont constitués de quartz et de feldspath. L'étude a porté sur des minéraux choqués présentant des éléments planaires à l'échelle du microscope optique. Ces structures sont associées à des pressions de choc de 10 à 40 GPa. La microscopie optique, la microscopectrométrie Raman, et surtout la microscopie électronique par transmission, ont été utilisées pour cette étude. Les spectres Raman sont intermédiaires entre ceux d'une phase cristalline et ceux d'une phase vitreuse de même composition. Ceci est confirmé par les microstructures observées, en microscopie électronique. En effet, les échantillons sont constitués d'une alternance pseudopériodique à l'échelle du micromètre, de lamelles vitreuses et cristallines. Dans le quartz, les plans des lamelles sont des plans denses de la structure. La détermination du mécanisme de déformation dans les minéraux naturellement choqués n'est pas évidente car la contrainte subie par le cristal est inconnue et elle n'est probablement pas assimilable à une compression simple. Les microstructures observées permettent cependant d'affirmer que la déformation des matériaux s'est effectuée par cisaillement intense le long du plan des lamelles vitreuses qui, à l'état fondu, constituent des zones de faible viscosité. La contrainte appliquée, même si elle est complexe, est localement homogène, et donne cependant lieu à une déformation hétérogène, par développement d'instabilités mécaniques. Ces instabilités sont localisées dans des plans cristallographiques denses d'orientation proche des plans de contraintes de cisaillement maximum (à 45° de la contrainte de compression). Il est proposé que le déplacement de dislocations à grande vitesse implique une contrainte locale importante qui est relaxée par la vitrification locale du matériau suivant des lamelles à l'intérieur desquelles s'effectue la totalité de la déformation. Les observations effectuées par différents auteurs sur des matériaux choqués en laboratoire sont assez divergentes et le modèle présenté ne semble pas pouvoir être appliqué à l'ensemble d'entre elles. Un programme complet d'expériences de choc en laboratoire permettrait d'interpréter ces divergences et de préciser le domaine d'application du modèle

Nous avons d'abord etudie les contrastes des dislocations et des fautes de phasons en microscopie electronique a transmission. Dans AlPdMn, nous avons determine les vecteurs de Burgers des dislocations et leurs plans de deplacement, dans des echantillons deformes a basse temperature et sous pression de confinement et dans des echantillons deformes in-situ a haute temperature. Les resultats montrent que les dislocations se deplacent par montee. Nous avons egalement etabli que le glissement etait extremement difficile, au moins dans les plans binaires et a haute temperature. La forme rectiligne et le mouvement visqueux des dislocations indiquent qu'elles se deplacent par nucleation et propagation par montee de paires de crans. Nous avons transpose a la montee le modele de Hirth et Lothe pour le glissement dans les cristaux covalents. Les parametres d'activation predits par le modele sont en accord avec les donnees experimentales. Dans AlCuFe, nous avons montre l'existence d'une plasticite par mouvements de dislocations, probablement par montee.

Book excerpt: La zone de transition du manteau terrestre correspond à la transformation de l'olivine en ses polymorphes de haute pression, wadsleyite et ringwoodite. La plasticité de ces minéraux joue un rôle clé dans la convection globale du manteau terrestre, cependant, à ce jour, leurs mécanismes de déformation sont mal connus. L'objectif de ce travail est donc d'étudier les microstructures de déformation de la wadsleyite et de la ringwoodite par microscopie électronique en transmission. Les échantillons de wadsleyite et de ringwoodite sont synthétisés puis déformés dans une presse multi-enclumes. La déformation peut se faire par compression ou par cisaillement. Les échantillons obtenus sont ensuite observés par microscopie électronique en transmission. Tous les échantillons observés sont déformés plastiquement, témoignant que la déformation en presse multi-enclumes de la wadsleyite et de la ringwoodite est possible aux pressions et températures qui règnent dans la zone de transition du manteau.Dans le cas de la wadsleyite, cinq systèmes de glissement sont facilement activables: ư111{101}, [100]{021}, [100](010), [100]{011} et [100](001). Trois autres systèmes sont également activables, mais à basse température et fortes contraintes: [010](001), [010]{101} et 101(010). Nous avons caractérisé deux systèmes de glissement dans la ringwoodite: ư110{111} et ư110{110}. Les résultats obtenus laissent supposer que d'autres structures spinelles comme MgAl2O4 forment de bons analogues de la ringwoodite. Enfin, une nouvelle méthode pour évaluer les contraintes différentielles appliquées durant la déformation en presse multi-enclumes est proposée. Cette méthode, basée sur la mesure du rayon de courbure des dislocations, conduit à des valeurs des contraintes de l'ordre de 400 MPa à 1000ʿC dans la wadsleyite comme dans la ringwoodite.
