Download or read book Capturing Memories written by Vivienne Woolf and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's fast-paced world, older people find little opportunity to tell stories and pass on the wisdom of their experience and years. They remember the past clearly, but the art of storytelling has been lost. Reminiscence classes revive this art. People's lives are recalled and valued through listening, talking and discussing; and, at the same time, a wealth of social history is preserved for posterity. This book shows how this has been achieved in a local Jewish community and how easily the reader could do the same in their own community, Jewish or otherwise. Capturing Memories has 12 chapters, each depicting a different facet of East End Jewish life between the Wars. There are a further two chapters on the process of reminiscing and the value of remembering the past: appendices provide additional suggestions and guidelines concerning this process. The illustrations are rare and each one informs or entertains the reader.
Download or read book Momento written by Bill Westheimer and published by . This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Momento is a collection of human experiences and the technological dreams triggered by our cameras. With each camera is a story told by its owner. The cameras were photographed using a19th century glass plate negatives, emphasizing how quickly the technology of past image-making has been made antique. The cameras capture our experience in mere fractions of seconds, but the cameras themselves endure to reflect the technology and aspirations of their eras. The memories we connect to the cameras are significant, sentimental and cherished. The cameras themselves evoke memories of meaningful moments in our lives that are as vivid and vital as the pictures they captured.

How can the two friends continue their magical collection--and their special friendship--from afar?
Download or read book Discourses of Memory and Refugees written by Siobhan Brownlie and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the discourse by and about refugees and asylum seekers in relation to memory with a particular focus on the United Kingdom. A series of studies using different analytical approaches is undertaken, and together the studies shed light on this overlooked area of research. The studies or ‘facets’ presented in the monograph cover a range of contexts and discursive genres: a joint BBC/refugee-authored television documentary, refugees’ oral histories, creative life writing by asylum seekers, parliamentarians’ debates, a reworking of canonical texts and sites in a protest campaign, and non-fiction testimonies and fictional works by later generations of refugee background. The monograph introduces ‘facet methodology’ to memory studies, arguing that this approach could encourage interdisciplinary research in the field.
Download or read book Capturing Aguinaldo written by Dwight Sullivan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “American century” began with the Spanish-American War. In that conflict’s aftermath, the United States claimed the Philippines in its bid for world power. Before the ink on the treaty with Spain had dried, the war in the Philippines turned into a violent rebellion. After two years of fighting, U.S. forces launched an audacious mission to capture Philippine president and rebel commander-in-chief Emilio Aguinaldo. Using an elaborate ruse, U.S. Army legend Frederick “Fighting Fred” Funston orchestrated Aguinaldo’s seizure in 1901. Capturing Aguinaldo is the story of Funston, his gambit to catch Emilio Aguinaldo, and the United States’ conflicted rise to power in the early twentieth century. The United States’ war with Spain in 1898 had been quick and, for the Americans in the Philippines, virtually bloodless. But by early 1899, Filipino nationalists, who had been fighting the Spaniards for three years and expected Spain’s defeat to produce their independence, were fighting a new imperial power: the United States. The Filipinos eventually abandoned conventional warfare, switching to guerilla tactics in an ongoing conflict rife with atrocities on both sides. By March 1901, the United States was looking for a bold strike against the nationalists. Brigadier General Frederick Funston, who had already earned a Medal of Honor, and four other officers posing as prisoners were escorted by loyal Filipino soldiers impersonating rebels. After a ninety-mile forced march, the fake insurgents were welcomed into the enemy’s headquarters where, after a brief firefight, they captured President Aguinaldo. At long last, the rebellion neared collapse. More than a swashbuckling tale, Capturing Aguinaldo is a character study of Frederick Funston and Emilio Aguinaldo and a look at the United States’ rise to global power as it unfolded at ground level. It tells the thrilling but nearly forgotten story of this daring operation and its polarizing aftermath, highlighting themes of U.S. history that have reverberated for more than a century, through World War II to Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
