Book Shark

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Ellis
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2012-04-17
  • ISBN : 1461747929
  • Pages : 291 pages

Download or read book Shark written by Richard Ellis and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The sharks, ancient or modern, real or imaginary, have always been with us, and will probably remain with us forever. They appear not only in movies and literature, but in countless permutations of size, shape, and materials, permeating our daily lives with their silent menace. In a sense, humans live in a world replete with sharks, not vice-versa.” Thus Richard Ellis sets about chronicling and debunking the myths of sharks throughout history. From 18th century art to the phenomena of JAWS, “the shark” has remained the indomitable aggressor of the deep, the last demon of humankind. The image of the shark and the fear it inspires infiltrates our daily lives with its mythical power and strength. But it is not man who should fear the shark. Our need to dominate these predators is destroying them and their habitat. Through hundreds of full-color images Ellis proves the necessity of preserving these majestic creatures. As curator of the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art’s exhibition entitled “Shark”, debuting May 2012, Ellis adeptly turns these sleek, efficient hunters from monsters of the deep into rare, beautiful forces of nature.

Book Shark Drunk

Download or read book Shark Drunk written by Morten Strøksnes and published by Random House. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ** BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week ** Shark Drunk is, in part, the tale of two men in a very small boat on the trail of a very big fish. It is also a story of obsession, enchantment and adventure. A love song to the sea, in all its mystery, hardship, wonder and life-giving majesty. In the great depths surrounding the remote Lofoten islands in Norway lives the Greenland shark. Twenty-six feet in length and weighing more than a tonne, it can live for 200 years. Its fluorescent green, parasite-covered eyes are said to hypnotise its prey, and its meat is so riddled with poison that, when consumed, it sends people into a hallucinatory trance. Armed with little more than their wits and a tiny rubber boat, Morten Strøksnes and his friend Hugo set out in pursuit of this enigmatic creature. Together, they tackle existential questions, experience the best and worst nature can throw at them, and explore the astonishing life teeming at the ocean’s depths.

Book Global Perspectives on the Biology and Life History of the White Shark

This beautifully illustrated reference represents a historic change in the context of White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) research. Once considered one of the most poorly understood and difficult sharks to study, this timely book recognizes a new sophisticated focus on the White Shark, raising its status from obscurity to enlightenment. The Global Perspectives on the Biology and Life History of the White Shark celebrates the White Shark as the most studied shark in the sea. Within the chapters one can find new insights into a vast range of topics, such as behavior, physiology, migration patterns, habitat preferences, daily activity patterns, molecular genetics, reproductive biology and new research methods. The book also delves into population monitoring and policy options for managers and researchers.

Book Behavior of the White Shark Carcharodon Carcharias and Scalloped Hammerhead Sphyrna Lewini

Download or read book Behavior of the White Shark Carcharodon Carcharias and Scalloped Hammerhead Sphyrna Lewini written by A. Peter Klimley and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capture records of 109 white sharks caught along the western coast of North America indicate the following life history pattern. Adult females give birth to pups during the late summer and early fall south of the Point Conception to live both inshore or offshore at islands. As females continue to grow, they move back south of Point Conception yet remain offshore probably to give birth to young. It is believed that the areal distribution of the shark is governed by the availability of pinniped prey for adults and possibly the need for pupping grounds with few predators and competitors. The area with the highest abundance of sharks is the coastline within the Point Reyes/Farallon National Marine Sanctuary. A multisensor, computer-interfaced telemetry system has been built. Transmitters have sensors for monitoring swimming speed, depth, surrounding water temperature, and light level. Expansion board hardware converts pulsed telemetry signals to TTL logic. Software has been written to: (1) convert time intervals into sensor values, (2) display 8 channels of sensor values either numerically or graphically, (3) display sensor values of a single channel graphically with high resolution, and (4) store the sensor data on floppy disk. The system will be used to describe predation by the white shark on pinnipeds and orientational behavior in pelagic sharks.
